~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Chapter 6 *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
All night, Irisa had spent with the Elven males. They had thought she was crazy at first, but found it amusing that a women should wish to be given the same hard bent tasks they all had to go through. They were all amazed by how well she caught on... Never had another female been so bold, nor strong to accept the hard lessons. Irisa had spent most of the night with swordplay, and managed well.
She wanted her skills to be at 100%, nothing less, and each time she made a mistake she corrected it, and got better. It was now morning, but perhaps close to 10:00am. She jumped up off the ground as the other Elf made for a low swing, and returned to the harsh fight. However, as she and the other Elf battled, she did not see Legolas and his father watching her. She had been mocked for dressing as a male Elf, but did not care. It was better then the dresses she had had to wear.
Thranduil nodded in her direction. "She is determined, that one. Always has been, really..." He blinked. "She's caught on remarkably fast."
Legolas agreed. "All in one night, she has learned a month's worth of material." He smiled. "Then again, we've always had the best trainers. Still, it is a feat even for an Elf whose family has been in the practice for years. Still... she has much to learn. I hope to help her when I am all well."
His father looked at him. "And how are you, my son?"
"Well... I am on the mend. We do heal fast... By the end of the week, I shall have had all my strength returned to me." He smiled.
Irisa after five more minutes had won, and offered her hand to the Elf she had beaten, and helped him to his feet. "Well done Irisa." He patted her on the shoulder. Shall we test you in archery later?" He smirked knowing well that last night, she had hated it.
Irisa let the other Elf take the sword that she had been using. "Might as well. I shall see you in a few hours over by the archery area." She replied.
"We will look forward to it again Irisa!" A few of them chuckled, and went to go rest for awhile all tired and worn out, but quite thrilled to have trained a women, and one that caught on quite quickly. Irisa vanished inside of the palace. She looked to see one of the servant girls that tended to her earlier yesterday appear.
"Lady Irisa! You should not be wearing that! Vala, what have you done all night, you are a mess, my lady! I shall draw you a bath and get you a dress?" She said rushing off. Irisa groaned and shook her head, "If I so as much see a dress, I shall tear it apart! The bath is all I need, and I can clean myself this time." She stated bluntly, and moved off to Legolas room, and knocked on the door to hear someone say she could enter and stepped inside and noticed Legolas was up and about.
"How does your wounds from last night fare my friend?" She asked.
"Quite well, thank you!" he said, smiling up at her. He wore a long, soft robe; one that did not bother the wounds he had received. "They are nearly half gone already." Holding up a book, he looked with a rather childish pout at her. "I cannot be off playing as you can... I must sit here and study! To strengthen my spells. I am out of practice, I'm afraid!"
"I want you sleeping." She pointed at the bed. "Now sit or else I'll be forced to tie you down to your bed." She laughed. "Now go, sit, sit. I do not wish to play the part of your mother." She winked.
These words, however, saddened him. "Mother..." he whispered softly in Sindarin. He closed his eyes, and his book fell forgotten to the floor.
Irisa was slightly confused. "Legolas, are you okay?" She was concerned now by his sudden wave of sadness.
"Aye... I am all well...Perhaps I am still sleepy." He tried to smile to her, but there was no spirit in it. Kneeling, he retrieved his book from the floor. "I suppose...I shall...retire now. Perhaps I'd like a bath...something to relax me... Yes, healing pool..." his words were scattered and idle now.
"Ah rest then...I wish to see you at 100% when we leave. I know you shall be in higher spirits once we are on our way." She paused for a moment, before going on. "You will need all the rest you can get. Vampires are strong, and are not to be thought of as easy targets." She looked out towards the woods in which they had been hunted down like dogs last night.
"I do not wish for you to be hurt. I am doing all of this training to protect myself, that way we will both be able to fight without having to worry about the other." She placed a hand on his shoulder, blue eyes locking with his own. "If you ever need to talk, you can always come to me." She smiled softly, and patted his good shoulder lightly, and moved towards the door to exit.
His nod was slow and tired. "Yes... I thank you and...." There was a long pause, which made her stop to look around at him curiously. "Ah..." he smiled. "Good night, to you."
"And to you my friend." She said one more goodbye to him and left to go soak in her bath. She was glad to find her room was empty and no servant girl at all and another clean male outfit for her to wear, along with some weapons that were on her bed for her to have. She looked down and picked of the letter and read it. It was from Legolas father.
Irisa,
Long had I hoped you would finally be able to come to us, and I am glad, ever so glad that you have taken up self-defense. This is as it should be. I do not know what should await you on this journey, but I will try to help prepare you for all that you might have to face. There is something I have been meaning to tell you, but have not been able to...
The identity of your father is known. Or was, before he passed away. He was a warrior who had died an honorable death. Truly, did he love your mother. This sword that you have been given was his. It is only right that it should pass into your hands. Long may it protect you and guide you in his spirit. All my love to you, near-daughter of mine.
Truly yours,
Thranduil
Irisa felt some bit of shock fill her, but anger to her mother. Her mother had never showed an ounce of love to her, had always wanted to use her, to let sick hungry men rape her and steal her on her innocence.
Irisa set the note down, and picked up the sword that lay on her bed, and ran her finger along the blade. It was a good sword, it had been through many battles she could tell, and had Elven words written on it.
She carefully placed it back down on the bed, and toyed with the daggers. Her favorite. There were six of them. She laughed softly to herself. "Now I see why I was so good at them." She noticed the Elven bow and arrows and picked up the things, and knew that tonight she would use this. She felt a single tear slip down her face.
So, her father had been alive... but then killed. 'And to think I thought he had just spent one night with my mother, but why did he not come back? Where was he?' She wondered, and shook her head.
She could not dwell on her past, and moved over to her bath and stripped herself of her dirty garments, and slipped into the nice warm bath. She sighed in contentment as the warmth embraced her, and removed her Elven braids, and sank under the water to get her hair went and came back up from the water and placed her head down on a soft towel.
Meanwhile, a small group of Elven males, all sons of prominent lords, were down preparing the archer's room for Lady Irisa.
"She's lovely, isn't she?" Said one. Another nodded.
"Quite! Taken though, isn't she?" He winked.
"Is she?" Asked a third.
One of them leaned over with his arm against a target. "Do you think the Prince would really jump on that opportunity?"
They all laughed. "Well, I can give ye many reasons why he should!"
"Aye!" laughed another, "And I can give ye many reasons why she should want him to!" He winked again, and they all enjoyed this bit of fun at the two's expense.
"Nay, but it would appear both know how to mask their emotions well." One said, joining in with the laughs.
"If, indeed, they really do feel anything for each other in that manner." It was one of the armsmen, and there was a scowl in his voice. "For shame! Teasing about them like that, what, and behind their backs!" But he was trying to hide a smirk too.
"Ah, but it is true. However, if the Prince and her do not show any signs of being anything more than friends, I would not mind attempting to have her! If she would allow it... She is quite wild, but I like that spark of life she has. A fire that burns bright, willing to risk it all, even if it means bringing her own death. It's a shame not many other Elven women are like her, she is really one of a kind." The younger archer stated, as he set up one of the targets.
The rest of them could not but help to nod their agreement and respect for her. "She is a true spirit, that's for certain!"
"But it is even more amusing to watch her try her hardest in this. She is better with the sword and throwing daggers, and perhaps after this for a few hours, we should teach her how to fight without weapons. She stated that she wished to be treated as a man. Let us do just that. She wants to test herself and see how much her body can take. It will do some good really for her." Another said, from where he sat.
"Aye... Suppose... But, we must go easy on her too. I mean, for as much as she wants to be a male...She was born a lady. One cannot deny their own nature." It was the armsman again. He was the eldest there. "Even Lady Irisa will learn soon enough!" He added with a wink.
"Yes, but she will know, and demand it. You just wait and see. Let us start her off with the weakest of us, and when we see that she can endure more pain, let us switch to another, and so forth."
"Aye, that would be best." One said as he sent his arrow flying into the target.
