-Chapter Five-
-Interlude I: Vanity Fair-

There once was a city. It was a grand city indeed, and the capital of the country in which it could be found. Monumental edifices rose high above paved streets that were crawling with laughing people.

There once was a young woman. She was not a spectacular woman in any way except one: she was very clever. She possessed only a small amount of beauty, status, and wealth, so her wit was a necessity, and oft used to her advantage.

The woman resided in the glorious capital city, employing her intellect as a trade to acquire the only things she desired: men and influence. Despite the fact that there were many women far more attractive than she, men desired her as well, for she was talented in the act of love making. Men of all ranks in society sought her out, secretly, because being caught with such a low-bred woman would be blasphemy. She happily kept their secrets, in exchange for a small sum of money or perhaps an agreement of power, behind closed doors.

And in this way, steadily, the unremarkable woman climbed the social ladder. She appeared at lords' parties and ladies' dances. She mingled with the upper class, winning over new friends and gaining new enemies.

There once was a king. This king ruled over the country and its capital city. He was introduced to the ordinary woman at a gathering. He became enchanted with the woman's ability to fit snugly into any situation and with the ease with which she greeted those much more important than she. To him, she was a living, breathing paradox.

To her, he was a prize.
