-Interlude II: Royally Screwed-

 

There once was a queen. Her husband was the king of the country and its glorious capital city. The queen was not at all fond of the unimpressive woman who seduced her way through society.

 

There once was an affair. The king loved his wife, he supposed. But the ordinary woman intrigued him. She beckoned him to her bed, and he did not resist.

 

There once was a law. In the king's beautiful country it was a felony to commit adultery. The punishment for breaking this law was exile. The reminder of the ominous edict festered in the king's mind the entire time he made love to the woman who was not beautiful or rich or his wife.

 

The very night he laid with his mistress he learned that his wife was with child; his heir. His heart rejoiced. His mind despaired. The next night, he took both women to his bed, at separate times. The queen did not know.

 

There was once a full moon. The king and his mistress sat beneath it, naked and sweating from a round of love making. The woman told him she was pregnant, as well.

 

The woman's world was becoming complicated. The king's world was falling apart.
