Chapter 5
Ichi sat at the bar with his head on the counter, it was lonely tonight, not many people in because of the weather. Cold, raining and cloudy. It reflected how Ichi felt. The barkeep offered him another drink, he took it not knowing what else to do. “Rough day?” he asked drying a glass. “Sort of…” Ichi replied. He didn't feel like talking, he just wanted to be with Sohru, he wanted his soft pale body next to his and he wanted to hug and kiss him. “What's been going on in your life then?” he knew the barkeep, he had been going there since he was 16, he let him drink underage. “Nothing really…just….stuff.” He didn't like telling people of his life, even though he knew the man well enough, he didn't want him to know anything about his personal life. “Heh, the wife threw you out?” Ichi looked up at him shocked. “What makes you think I'm married?”
“Oh no reason, just that look you've got on your face, I've seen many a man come in here with that look…..had a lover's spat maybe?”
“Well no not really…..a friend….they've gone and I want to see them again…I will…but not right now.”
“Gettin' ya down?”
“Yeah.” The conversation wasn't really going anywhere but he felt a little better that someone was talking to him.
The barkeep snorted. “Is it that pretty young thing you had in here a while ago?” He asked bending over. He looked at him confused. Pretty young thing? He thought. “Who do you mean?”
“That pretty girl that came from the corner over there and started talkin' to ya, oh yeah you two were havin' a rare old time!” Ichi twigged. He burst into a hysterical fit of laughter. He meant Sohru, he had thought Sohru was girl. He was in some ways relieved. He buried his face into his arms giggling, hiding his red face. When he was relatively under control, he looked up and wiped the tears away. “Something tickle ya?” the barkeep asked.
“No...hah well yeah, just remembering something funny.” He tried to stop himself giggling like a little girl and cleared his throat. Sohru did look very feminine, but hadn't thought he'd be mistaken for a girl. He giggled again. Oh stop it! You're a grown man! He told himself and straightened his face, he didn't
know whether it was the alcohol, or just the thought of Sohru, but he tingled all over.
Sohru awoke from his deep restful sleep. He ached all over and he could hardly breathe due to the bandage wrapped tightly around his torso. He yawned, flinching slightly at the pain in his lip, at least it wasn't as swollen as before. He didn't even try to get up, he knew he would just be greeted, in open arms, with pain. He sighed heavily. As he did so, he seen the door open and he turned his head. Aika, with a bouquet of flowers, bounded towards him. He smiled. She laid the flowers on the bed and hugged him gently trying not to hurt him. “How are you today?” say asked cheerfully.
“Oh…fine.” He replied. “how long have I been sleeping for?”
“About a day, but that's okay, the doctors say you don't have a concussion.” She smiled and hugged him again. “I bet your boyfriend his worried.” Sohru turned pink, though it was hard to see under his black and blue bruises. “Aika, I don't have a boyfriend.” He stroked the back of his hand against her cheek, she giggled, and she knew this meant that he did, but didn't want Taikata to know. “Hiya.” He said once they were finished. “Oh hello Tai, I'm sorry I've caused so much trouble.”
“No big, you're my bro.” He took his hand in his and squeezed it.
“How is Kenzea and Harika? Good?” he was talking about his younger brother and older sister. He hadn't seen them since the funeral. “They're both fine, but I'm more worried about you at the moment.”
“I'm fine, no worries…..I mean….I can't breathe and I'm in total agony, but hey I'm fine.” He smiled.
“Sohru? Where does…um...your…”
“Ichi!” He said.
“Yeah! Where does Ichi go?”
“Um, he goes to the Scene-Side bar….why?”
“Just wanted to know.” Aika said smiling, she had a fancy to herself, then continued talking to Sohru till he was too tired and they had to leave.
Aika made her way to the Scene-Side bar, it was a cold night. She didn't know what Ichi looked like, but if he went there often then the barkeep should know something. Scene-Side bar was a pretty sort of tavern thing that's only open at night. She peered in the door, and then hurriedly made her way to the counter. She coughed because of the thick black smoke. “Excuse me.” She said trying to get the barkeep's attention, she was small and she couldn't get herself on the stool. “Hmm? Well, well little lady! I'm afraid I can't serve you.” He said smiling. “You're a bit underage.”
“No! I'm looking for someone, a man.” She said her chin just above the counter.
“Oh? What does he look like then?”
“Um…I'm not sure, but his name is Ichi.” Ichi turned round hearing his name being said. He looked at the small girl; she looked like Sohru, a lot like Sohru. “Hey.” He said. “You Sohru's little sis?” At first Aika's jaw dropped, then her face burst into a grin. “Wow.” She said quietly. She grabbed his arm and pulled him towards the door, he let her. When they got outside she took a good look at him, he really was the way that Sohru had described him, tall, dark-skinned, handsome. “Hi Mr. Ichi! It's so good to finally meet you! Sohru never stops talking about you!” she said, rushing her words and jumping excitedly.
“I see” he said smiling, “Where is Sohru?”
“In the hospital.” Ichi stood rigid, his eyes glazed slightly and he couldn't focus, and all the colour drained from his face. Seeing this she added. “But he's okay, there's just a risk of concussion, they just wanna keep him in a few more days.”
“What happened?” he asked grabbing her arms.
“We-ell…he got into a fight, and got pretty beaten, bit he's okay…he broke his nose and ribs, and there's a chance he could be a bit deaf in his left ear.” She said shifting from foot to foot. Ichi's face changed from worry, into anger. “Who…did this? Who did this?!” He said raising his voice, his low and smooth voice now rough and stretched. Aika looked at him, he would easily kill Hitcho if get got the chance. “Um...I don't know, but don't worry he's fine! You can come see him with me in the hospital tomorrow.”
“That….that sounds good.” His voice returning back to normal, he released her. “I'll walk you home.” The walk was pleasant, though few words were exchanged. When they reached her house they stopped. “Thank you for walking me home, but, why did you?”
“A gentleman `always' escorts a lady home at night.” He smiled at her and kissed her forehead, then proceeded to walk in the other direction. “Oh! Come to the hospital at 9:00am! I'll be waiting at the front doors!” she shouted after him, he waved confirming the information had been received and then she went indoors.
Ichi arrived at the hospital at 9:00am on the dot. And Aika, as she said, was standing at the front doors waiting for him. “I haven't told him you're coming” She said as they were walking “It's a surprise!” When they got to his room Ichi froze, he was somewhat frightened to see him. “It's okay, his face isn't too bad.” Whispered Aika. When they entered, Sohru turned. His face was bruised badly, but not as badly as before. “Ichi?!” he said pushing himself up a little. “But?” He looked at Aika. “Ahh it was you! Sneaky devil!”
“I try.” She said sitting down. Ichi sat down and looked at his lover's face, tears sprang to his eyes, but he bit them back. “So. Hiding from me eh?” He said brushing the back of his hand over his face. “I wish, I want them to let me out!” Sohru flinched. “But you look terrible, I think they should keep you in.”
“I'm fine, all I need is a pair of crouches!”
“I'm sure that's not true!”
“Oh c'mon! I'm fine!”
“I think not!” Aika watched the two, not sure if they were fighting or not.
“Hey Sohru! You sure know how to pick a man! He's gorgeous!” She said snuggling into Ichi's arm. Ichi looked down at her and blushed. “Yes he is huh? I'm lucky he had me is all I'm saying.”
“You? Lucky to have me? Hah! It's quite the opposite my friend!”
“You mean boyfriend?” said Aika.
“Um….” He looked at Sohru, the situation had never come up. Sohru sighed.
“Yes Aika, we are, at least I think we are.” He looked to Ichi, he nodded smiling. The door was opened. They all turned their attention. It was Hitcho, he walked over to the bed and pulled up a chair. “Sohru….I have something I want to say to you.” Ichi eyed him. “I'm not sorry for what I did, but I am sorry for putting to in such a mess, the purpose was right, just not the actions.” Sohru blinked.
“You mean that? Really?”
“Yeah.” He said shifting.
“Thank you.”
“Yeah, well….” Ichi was staring at him, like a cat hunting it's prey.
“You….you're the one that did this?” He said swallowing.
“Um…what's it to you? And yeah I am, I'm sorry to say this to you Sohru, but you were really out of order.” Sohru nodded agreeing.
“No…YOU are the one that's out of order!” He said rising, his eyes flaming a deep dark red. His voice was deeper, rougher, it had a frightening tone. “Ichi! Ichi calm down, don't hurt him!” As soon as Sohru took his hand, he snapped out of his bitter rage. “What the hell are you?!” Said Hitcho almost out the window. “A Fire Demon, watch your back, or I might tare it to shreds!” Hitcho gasped. “Boy, you can REALLY pick `em fag boy!” and he walked out of the room. “F-Fag boy?!” said Ichi.
“A pet name! haha!”
Sohru got out of the hospital a day later, he had said he wanted to say at Ichi's house until he was better. He lay in his lover's arms, and sighed. “Hmm? Are you okay?” Sohru had heard this sentence so much now.
“I'm fine, just happy….Ichi?”
“Yeah?”
“I noticed something these last few weeks.”
“Oh? And what's this?” He kissed the top of his head and snuggled against it.
“You don't have a lonely heart anymore.”
“Oh I know that” He said, he brought Sohru close to his face. “That's because you are in it.” And they kissed soft and tenderly, Ichi felt complete, and Sohru felt accepted, now they will be happy.
