With everyone almost together it was impossible to resist reminiscing about old times.
“So, how is she holding up?” Sasuka asked Lyle as they took a seat beside Michael.
“I’m not sure. She tries to be strong, but you can tell the way everything’s been happening the past few days has really tore away at her resolve. She really misses him, and I can’t blame her.” Lyle said softly. “It’s not the same without him.”
“I know what you mean. But still, heh, if this is going to be the last time I go into battle. I’m glad I’ll have you guys beside me.” Sasuka said with a smile. “Jamie’s right about one thing. Alex would charge in fighting no matter what.”
“He never was one to wait an plan things out was he?” Michael said as he opened up his eyes. “But that’s what made him so interesting. That’s also what made him an idiot.”
“Alex wasn’t an idiot. He just followed his heart.” Ashley interjected as she sat down. She looked over at Jamie who was sitting down starring into the sunset. “Maybe he followed his heart too much. Maybe there would’ve been another way.”
“No, he did what he had to. If there had been another way...he wouldn’t have done what he did.” Jamie said without looking at him. “I’m not deaf you know, I can hear everything you’re saying.”
“Sorry...” Everyone said in unison. They were afraid they had dredged up more painful memories for Jamie. Memories that she didn’t deserve to be haunted with.
“Don’t be. We all miss him, there’s no point in denying it.” Jamie said. With one swift motion she wiped the tears from her eyes as she turned around to face them. “We all cared about him. That is why we can’t let his sacrifice be in vain. We must defeat this new threat. We have to do it, so that we didn’t lose Alex for nothing.”
“When you put it like that...I feel sorry for who ever’s ass we’re going to kick.” Lyle said with a sly grin. “Cause believe me, I’m going to make him think twice about desecrating Alex’s memory.”
“Hey, don’t hog all the glory for yourself man.” Michael added. “We all want a piece of him.”
“Is it just me or is it getting really cold?” Ashley asked as she shivered lightly.
“Yeah, we must be getting close to the Ice Maiden shrine.” Sasuka said. Suddenly a strong wind started blowing as snow and hail began to pelt the heros.
“What’s going on?” Lyle asked as he created an electrical barrier to protect them.
“I think we entered some kind of barrier!” Sasuka yelled as he used his power over wind to help and ease the downpour of snow and hail. Ashley and Michael were beside him melting the snow so Jamie would be able to see clear enough to land the enormous rock platform they were all riding on.
“Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea.” Michael said.
“Yeah, maybe we should’ve gotten Ryku first. He could’ve teleported us right there.” Ashley agreed.
“Could you be quiet! I’ve got to concentrate or we’ll crash. Landing a platform twice the size of a semi truck really isn’t that easy.” Jamie yelled.
Everyone kept quiet as they used their powers to help keep the snow storm at bay. Finally the storm eased up enough to where everyone could make out what was below them. An enormous temple, the outside field was covered in snow and scattered around the field was innumerable ice statues. As Jamie lowered the platform towards the temple everyone became aware of a high pitched growling that came from the snow beneath them. Suddenly numerous ice creatures launched themselves at the hero’s. The creatures were made completely of ice and had long razor sharp talon, and slender limbs.
Without hesitation everyone switched into battle mode. Michael vaporized two of the ice creatures with his fire blasts. Lyle joined in slicing one in half and decimating another with his lightning. Ashley joined with Michael combining their fire powers together. Sasuka destroyed three of the creatures with one of his cards, the others he vaporized with lightning. Jamie chucked large boulders at the creatures, and finally created a large earth barrier around them, so that the creatures couldn’t get in.
“What the hell are those things?” Michael yelled as he checked a place on his leg where one of the creatures had caught him.
“If I had to guess, those would be Sara’s golems. Rather vicious ones at that.” Jamie said noting the fact that the creatures could still be heard from outside the barrier.
“Judging by all the precautions we’ve met, she’s seen her fair share of the demons already.” Sasuka concluded.
“Yeah, that’s a bit of an understatement. We all have. It’s only natural that whoever is controlling them would first send them after the remaining guardians.” Lyle added.
“I think they’re leaving.” Ashley suddenly said. Sure enough the creatures sounds had dispersed. “But here’s the question...is that a good thing or a bad thing?”
Before anyone could answer water droplets pelted the ground beside them. The droplets then combined to form a being of pure water. Everyone knew that this could only be Sara, but in the darkness she wouldn’t be able to tell who they were. Without warning Sara suddenly launcher her liquid form at Michael. With amazing agility Michael dodged her attack, but before he could recover she launched an ice blast which froze him to the wall. By pure reaction Lyle swung his sword at the liquid form when it came after him. In this form his sword did nothing as Sara simply twisted her body around his sword swirling around it. Suddenly her hand shot out in front of his face and launched a mini tsunami at point blank range. The resulting force sent him flying backwards. Jamie tried to create a cage for Sara to get her to stop her assault, but before she could finish Sara escaped through the fissures in the rock. She lifted her body high into the air and turned the entire ground beneath their feet to ice. Just as she went down to strike at Ashley who had slipped on the ice, she was blinded by a bright light.
“That’s enough Sara. In a world where friends are few, you don’t need to attack those you have.” Sasuka said as he held up his hand, lightning energy crackling off of it, showing his true identity. He smiled warmly as the liquid creature took form showing Sara for the first time. She looked tired and worn out as she looked at everyone who she had just attacked.
“Oh my God, I’m so sorry!” Sara exclaimed worried that she might have hurt someone. “I’ve been attacked so much, I just instinctively thought you were more demons.”
“Demons with elemental powers?” Michael asked as he melted the ice around his body. Everyone got up to greet Sara. As hugs were exchanged all around.
“Yes actually. The demons have been using elemental powers now. I don’t know how, but they have. I’ve been attacked non stop for about three days now.” Sara said weakly. “It really takes a toll on you. That’s the reason for the barrier and the golems. I created them so I could rest.”
Jamie let down the enormous walls she had erected as Sara told them of the constant attacks that had been waged on her. “What’s going on?”
“We don’t know. But at least it looks like you’ve been spared for the most part.” Lyle said as he walked around to examine the many ice statues surrounding the place. Suddenly yellow eyes glared at him from beneath the ice. “Holy shit! These are demons!”
“Yes...I couldn’t kill all of them. So I used my powers to freeze them. Only the ones with power over lightning or fire are able to melt out. Or if they are teleports. Those my golems kill.” Sara said suddenly she collapsed from exhaustion. Lyle caught her before she hit the ground.
“Let’s get her inside and out of this cold.” He suggested as everyone headed towards the temple. Inside it was as if they were in another world. The lush inside was very warm and had numerous hot springs. Jamie and Ashley took Sara to one of the bedrooms and helped to warm her up and make sure she rested up. The guys immediately began exploring the temple. When Jamie and Ashley came back to report that Sara was fine she just needed rest, Lyle came back with even better news.
“You’ll never believe what I just found!” Lyle exclaimed as he hurried from and underground passage.
“What is it now? Please don’t tell me you ransacked her fridge.” Jamie said sarcastically.
“Nah, I already covered that end.” Michael responded as he walked into the room bitting into a large sand which. After everyone gave him incredulous glances he shrugged. “What! I was hungry.”
“Never mind that. What did you find?” Sasuka asked intrigued by Lyle’s excitement.
“I found us a new transport. Come check it out.” Lyle said. Soon everyone found themselves in front of a large ship similar to an airplane. It was an almost transparent silver that shimmered in the natural light of the underground passage. It was very large and the insides were well furnished with more than enough room for everyone. The ship had weapon armaments and a weird set of controls with strange symbols and even weirder was the fact that even though the ship seemed more technologically advanced than any modern vehicles, it seemed to have been created a long time ago.
“I have to admit this is awesome. I really didn’t think they still had this.” Michael said as he ran his hand over the side of the vehicle. “The Eternity was the last weapon the Elementals ever created.”
“The Eternity?” Ashley asked.
“Yeah, that’s the name of this ship. Every Elemental contributed to this ships creation. It has the power of every element and is run on elemental power. I can’t believe it hasn’t been destroyed. I guess the Ice Maidens hid it here so that no one would disturb it.” Michael continued. “The only problem with this is, it was only to be activated by the Archangel's power. So without Alex its useless.”
After that disturbing news everyone proceeded sadly upstairs. It seemed as if without Alex, they couldn't do anything right. Soon exhaustion took over the heros as they each fell into a deep slumber.
