Rain poured from the sky, drowning out everything left inside. People on the street hurried to their cars or to get inside. But one person seemed oblivious to the rain as he gazed from his rooftop. His tears mixing with the rain.
“Alex...you need to come inside. Please, before the storm gets any worse.” Jamie said as she looked at Alex’s back. She knew he wouldn’t look at her until he had wiped the tears from his eyes, he was like that. He was the kind of person that wouldn’t let anyone know when something was bothering him, but everyone knew when something was. She had grown use to what he would do.
*He’s still mourning over Lyle. I can’t blame him, I miss him to. This is especially hard on him because Lyle was like his younger brother. Heh, they acted like brothers that was for sure.* Jamie thought silently as a tear rolled down her cheek and a small smile formed on her lips as she recollected on times gone by.
“I failed to protect him, simple as that. Once again I was too weak to help him.” Alex said as he finally turned around to face her. Jamie noticed to her shock that he hadn’t tried to hide his tears this time, his eyes were still red from crying.
“Alex, there was nothing we could’ve done about it. No one could’ve predicted what was going to happen. You’ve got to quit beating yourself up about this, Lyle would kick your butt if he found out you were making such a big deal out of this. I miss him to, but we have to keep going on. That’s if we want to respect his memory. He never quit no matter what, and neither should we.”
“Heh, I know your right, but I still can’t help but think it’s my fault. That’s just the way I am, but we’ll talk about it later, right now we’ve got some demons to kill.” Alex stated as he pointed towards a large group of demons forming on the horizon. “Looks like we have some visitors to greet.”
“Oh joy, everyone get ready. It’s show time.” Jamie called down stairs as she summoned her weapon by her side. Alex sprouted angel wings and picked Jamie up quickly in his arms.
“Meet us their guys, me and Jamo are going on a head.” Alex said quickly as he dove off the building and flew towards the demons.
“Better hurry before they reach the town.” Jamie said noting how close there were to the borders.
“Yeah, I’ll have to wait for everyone else though before I can activate a shield so looks like we’ll just have to keep them back the old fashioned way.” Alex said as he landed right in the midst of them. Jamie jumped down and immediately went into action. She flicked her wrist quickly in every direction while dodging attacks and moving quickly through the demon horde. Her whip slicing off arms, heads, legs, anything the razor sharp blade came in contact with as she moved. She also summoned large spikes from the earth piercing the demons before they could move.
Alex summoned his own weapon and began hacking away at the demon’s next to him. He summoned a fire shield to incinerate the demons that got to close. He then launched a few fire balls at a large group of demons. The flames left nothing but ashes in their wake. Alex charged up his sword and began quickly teleporting thru the demon ranks killing anything in his way.
Sasuka, Ashley, and Sara then arrived ready for battle. Sara quickly summoned ice spikes from the sky to destroy a few. Sasuka launched energized cards into a large group of demons destroying them also. Ashley jumped high into the air and landed in the midst of a large group of demons. Before they could attack she started spinning quickly, launching sonic blades out of her hands slicing the demons in half!
As the battle was dying down Alex noticed a young man about 20, wearing black pants, a white button up shirt with a bandage wrapped around his right hand watching the fight, which was unusual because the higher level demons they were fighting couldn’t be seen by the normal human eye. Suddenly, a few stray demons noticed the young man to and charged him. Alex desperately tried to reach him before it was too late. But right before the demons were within striking distance the young man raised his left hand and easily evaporated them with an energy attack.
“Whoa” Sasuka said as he immediately noticed the huge energy level. Ashley, Jamie, and Sara also became aware of his presence as he jumped into the air and summoned an enormous amount of energy.
“Veil of Death!” the man yelled as a black cloth appeared from his hands. The cloth stretched over the entire length of the battle field and fell rapidly. Holes appeared in the linen over the heros and fell harmlessly over them. The demons however, were trapped inside it. When the man landed he snapped his fingers and a tremendous amount of energy was released from the cloth, sending out puffs of smoke. The man then waved his hand and the cloth shrunk back to it’s original size and disappeared into his right hand. The demons were gone, it was almost as if they had never been there.
“Wow, that was awesome. I take it your not from around here.” Alex said as he and everyone else surrounded the stranger.
“Heh, your correct. I just happened upon this town this morning. I was passing by when I noticed your energy patterns, so I figured I would come and check it out.” the man said. “ I’m Azrael by the way.” Azrael said as he smiled brightly.
“Well nice to meet you. I’m Alex, this is Sasuka, Jamie, Ashley, and Sara.”
“Ah nice to meet you, especially you Archangel” Azrael said still smiling brightly.
“H-how, hmm, I think we’d better talk. If you want your welcome to stay with us.” Alex said, now eyeing the stranger with suspicion.
“I’d be glad to.” Azrael said just as pleasantly as before.
After much talk about the past, and of encounters with Death, Azrael sits amazed at the stories he has heard.
“I’ve heard the power of the Archangel and of his brethren is great, but not even I could have imagined it was this great!” Azrael declared. “ My friends and I had only heard legends about the Archangel, and what he would happen when his power was finally awakened but still for me to be sitting in the same room as him.”
“Heh, you make our story, and me especially out to be much much more than it really is my friend.” Alex said with an exuberant look in his eyes. “Now if you don’t mind, I’d like to know a little more about you.”
“Oh yes but of course. I come from Egypt, so do my friends. Who regrettably I must say are all of on various missions right now. But we were blessed with these incredible powers, long ago and were told to seek the Archangel when he finally is awakened. So, well here I am.”
“Are you or any of your friends by chance an element alist?” Sara inquired.
“Why no, I had heard that they were all wiped out.” Azrael said quit honestly.
“Well, it’s late we’d all better turn in. Azrael you can sleep in Ly...” Jamie stopped when she noticed the strict look upon Alex’s face signaling her to change her mind quickly. “Actually if you don’t mind right now the best place we can offer is the den.” pointing the couch positioned in front of the television.
“Thank you this is much appreciated. “
“Okay goodnight everyone.” Ashley said as her, Sara, and Jamie quickly went to their rooms on the other side of the warehouse.
“Let me guess, going out to find info on Azrael.” Sasuka said quietly to Alex as they headed to their rooms.
“You know it.” Alex replied quickly.
“Good, I’m coming too.” Sasuka said as he grabbed some more cards from the desk in his room. He and Alex then exited out of their rooms. Sasuka used his power over wind to glide gently through the air, Alex was propelled by his angelic wings.
“I don’t know about you but I really don’t like the reading I’m getting from this guy.” Alex said as he mused over his recent encounter with this Azrael.
“Yeah I understand. He definitely knows more than he’s telling. Also have you noticed anything weird about his energy?” Sasuka inquired.
“Yeah, it seems almost the same as ours, but older. Almost like its our powers just more I dunno mystical I guess.” Alex said for a lack of better words.
“Yeah, you know I was just wondering about something.”
“What?”
“Do you think there were people like us, I mean with our powers way back when. You know like in Ancient Egypt.”
“I’m not sure. More than likely. I mean everyone that has these powers, us, the element alist, even Death have them for some reason. None of this was chance. All this was planned long before our time, so more than likely there were people like us way back then. I mean you know like the prophets in the Bible or something.”
“Yeah, I guess your right.” Sasuka said quietly him and Alex were suddenly stopped dead in their tracks by an enormous amount of energy they sensed.
“Looks like tonight was a goodnight to patrol after all.” Sasuka said as he and Alex changed their direction to that of the energy source.
“Like I said everything happens for a reason.” Alex said “But do you feel that? Something’s different about this energy I mean sure it’s strong, but I sense a strong amount of blood lust in it to.”
“Yeah, we better tread carefully around here.” Sasuka added as he and Alex landed quietly in a deserted part of town. When they landed they immediately recognized the source of the energy. There standing before them was a monster of a man. He was at least 7 feet tall! He was very muscular and a strange armor covered his body. In his right hand he held an enormous sword, the blade of the sword alone was as tall as Alex himself. The blade was died red, presumably from the blood of his victims. He raised the sword menacingly at the heros.
“I see you found me hero’s. I was wondering if you would be able to sense my energy if I used a little bit of it.” the giant sneered evilly as if signaling that he knew the hero’s could do nothing to stop him.
“Hmm, big energy for a big man. Oh well, let’s cut the talk and get straight to the fighting.” Sasuka said as he readied for battle. The big man laughed as he placed his enormous sword next to the wall and cracked his knuckles.
“So your not going to use your sword?” Alex asked quizzically.
“Heh, no need. I have been called many names, but you may call me War. And trust me, there’s no way in hell you can win.” War stated as he glared evilly.
In an instant Sasuka and Alex both disappeared. Alex appeared in front of War and shot a powerful blast of energy at War’s stomach. Sasuka appeared above War’s head and launched another energy blast at War’s head. They two hero’s immediately jumped backwards and readied themselves for what ever might happen next. When the smoke cleared there was no trace of War.
“You two looking for me?” War said from behind them as he grabbed each of them by neck and thrust their heads forward into the concrete street. He lifted them up and was about to do it again when Alex grabbed onto his enormous arms and flipped himself out of War’s grip. Alex stood on War’s arms long enough to send a powerful kick to War’s chin, stunning him for a quick second. Alex then flipped off of War and launched another powerful blast at War’s chest. Sasuka followed suit and twisted around quickly before War could recover from the quick assault. Sasuka quickly launched some of his energized cards at War’s feet. The blasts destroyed the ground around his feet causing him to stumble slightly. Sasuka then summoned a vortex of wind which sent War staggering backwards a few steps. Sasuka applied more force to his wind but somehow War managed to stay on his feet and slowly advance towards Sasuka. Alex combined his fire energy with Sasuka’s wind attacks, still it seemed not to affect this monster. War suddenly disappeared high into the air. He then summoned an enormous amount of energy into his gargantuan fists.
“METEOR FIST!” War yelled as he quickly fell towards the two hero’s. Before they could dodge they were caught by the powerful eruption that occurred from the force of War’s fists hitting the ground. Alex and Sasuka were sent into the air by the attack. War followed them and knocked them back towards the ground with a powerful backhand. War then summoned even more energy into his fist as he flew towards the immobile hero’s.
“Twin Execution Strike” War yelled as each fist hit one of the hero’s. The shockwave from the attack leveled all the building on that block and left an enormous crater where the hero’s were.
“Heh, so much for the great Archangel. Hmm nice necklace though.” War said as he held Alex up in the air by his throat. He then ripped off Alex’s necklace and held it in his enormous hand.
“Oh well guess this night wasn’t a total loss.” War said as he tossed Alex aside, picked up his sword and walked away.
That morning Jamie was the first one to notice that Alex and Sasuka weren’t there.
“Ashley, Sara. Alex and Sasuka went out on patrol last night and they still haven’t returned yet.” Jamie said sounding a little worried. “Do you think Azrael had anything to do with it?”
“Probably, but we’d better keep things under wraps until they come back.” Ashley whispered to the others noting that Azrael was slowly waking up.
“But what if they don’t come back?” Sara asked voicing everyone’s worries.
“Then, we go looking for them.” Jamie said with fire in her eyes.
“Yawn...good morning. Were’s the Archangel and his friend.” Azrael asked groggily.
“Ummm” Jamie said reluctantly.
“Oy...we’re right here.” Alex said wearily as he and Sasuka hobbled inside. There clothes were torn and battered barely hanging off their bodies. They were covered in dust and and still had bits of gravel in their hair. They didn’t have any visible wounds, but they could tell that was due to Alex’s healing power.
“What happened to you guys!” Jamie exclaimed as the two beaten up friends made there way to the breakfast table.
“Well we ran into a very interesting fellow named War.” Sasuka said as he sat down.
“Yeah, as soon as we get something to eat lets head back out and try to find him.” Alex said with a fire in his eyes.
“Hey Alex, look man we got our butts handed to us last night. We lost fair and square. Let’s rest up a little bit before we go searching for another fight okay.” Sasuka said.
“I know, but you don’t understand. That jerk took my necklace. I’ve got to get it back.’ Alex said as he relaxed just a little in the chair, but still seemed on edge.
“Pardon me if you don’t mind. But what’s so important about this necklace.” Azrael asked.
“Actually I’ve wondered that too. Besides that fact that you’ve worn it ever since we’ve met you what’s so special about it.” Ashley asked.
“That necklace was the last thing my mom gave me before she died. She told me to always keep it by me, and that one day I’d need it for something important. That was my mom for ya. It was like she knew who I really was, almost as if all my life she was preparing for what was too come.” Alex said crestfallen.
“Heh, cheer up Alex.” Jamie said “ You don’t need too look so down. We’ll find that guy. And when we do he’ll have me to deal with.”
“Yeah okay. Look let me know when you guys are ready to go.” Alex said as he sauntered off into his room an closed the door.
Alex laid on his bed and reached for some pictures he had on his night stand. There were pictures of him and Jamie, him and all his friends, even one of him and Lyle...but there was one picture that Alex took out and mused over. It was a picture about 8 years old off him and his mom.
* Mom...I miss you so much.* Alex thought as he set the picture down. Exhaustion finally overwhelmed him as he dozed off into a deep slumber.
Alex saw images in his head. He saw what looked like ancient Egypt as he passed by the recently built pyramids. He then noticed a dark cloud move thru the land and he heard screaming. People were screaming about there children. Alex was then rushed to another scene. This one was of his mother. She was talking with someone Alex didn’t recognize. He couldn’t see the person’s face for it was covered by a cloak, but the person was wearing all white, the cloak was fastened by a solid gold brooch. The man handed Alex’s mother Alex’s necklace and said in a low voice.
“This is the key, too which only your son can use. Give it to him, make sure he has it at all times. For he will need it in the future.”
“I understand, thank you.” Alex’s mother replied as she took the necklace from the man.
“Your welcome, we are truly indebted to you. I sense you are dismayed, but remember you were chosen for a purpose. Don’t fear that you will do something wrong for everything has already been foreseen. Also Alex will be taken care of after you are gone, we can disturb the balance I’m sorry. Take care and may peace be with you.” the stranger said as he disappeared
*She knew...I can’t believe she knew!* Alex thought as more of his memories came back to him. He then began to realize why his mother had acted strangely the week before her death. Alex then saw memories that flooded his mind. He recalled, ones of him and his mother. She came into his room while he sat on the bed playing a video game.
“Alex honey.” she said.
“Yeah mom.” Alex replied curtly.
*I should have been nicer too her back then...if only I’d known.” Alex thought with regret as his eyes filled with tears, and his heart filled with despair.
“Look what a man gave me today.” His mom said as she handed Alex his necklace.
“Cool, who gave it to you.” the young Alex inquired as his mother put the necklace around his neck.
“I’m not sure, but you could say he was a friend. He told me to give this to you and that it would help you someday.” his mother said.
Suddenly a large black veil covered all Alex could see. Alex could sense death all around him. When he finally could see he noticed War stood in front of Alex, along with a skinny person dressed in a tan Egyptian tunic, also there was a person dressed in light green clothing and had a large glowing bow in his hand. The dark veil was behind them all covering them, shielding them. The veil then launched forwards towards Alex. Alex could feel death surround him and felt as if he were dying.
Suddenly Alex awoke in a cold sweat.
“It was a dream, just a dream. But it felt so real.” Alex said he then heard the others calling him.
“Hey Alex you ready to go find War?” Sara called as she banged on his door.
Alex got up and quickly opened up the door.
“Ready and waiting.” Alex said with a smile as they all left, including Azrael, to go search for War. Alex still felt a twinge of fear from before, but pushed that feeling aside for now.
They flew to the part of town Alex and Sasuka had been mercilessly beaten. When they landed Alex immediately tried to search out for War’s energy signal. Unfortunately he found nothing.
“This doesn’t make sense. I know what his energy signals like. If he’s anywhere on this earth I should be able to find him.” Alex said exasperated.
“Hey cheer up we’ll search around see what we can find out about him okay.” Ashley said with a slight smile. Sasuka nodded to her and they both flew off to gather any information they could about the entity War. Sara said something about checking with an old friend and went her own way. All who were left was Azrael, Jamie, and Alex.
“Well now Archangel I guess this gives us a little free time eh. How about it wanna spar?” Azrael asked mockingly.
“Not now Azrael. I’m really upset and I don’t want to hurt you. Sorry man.” Alex said as he brushed off Azrael’s question.
“Hey Azrael if you wanna spar so bad, fight me.” Jamie said as Alex looked in her direction. He could tell she was plotting something but he couldn’t tell what it was yet.
“But of course, if you so desire.” Azrael said as he did a slight bow. Before he could stand up straight again spikes from the earth flew up from all sides aimed for his head. Before they hit him, Azrael disappeared. He reappeared above Jamie and came crashing down with a powerful attack.
“Torturous Soul Reaver” Azrael yelled as his energized hands formed large claws. Jamie summoned a shield of earth to protect her from the attack. As the wall crumbled beneath the power of Azrael’s attack, Azrael was knocked backwards by Jamie’s energy attack. Azrael back flipped into a standing position and launched himself towards Jamie. Before he could reach her Jamie made the earth around his feet turn to mud and then harden quickly, encasing his feet in the ground. Jamie then jumped up into the air and flicked her whip in Azrael’s direction. The whip stuck into the ground in front of Azrael. Jamie then charged her whip with energy which caused the ground around Azrael to explode sending up a shower of rocks into the air. When the rocks subsided Azrael had disappeared and gotten behind Jamie. Azrael quickly kicked Jamie back towards the ground. Before she hit the ground a black veil opened up from the ground and enveloped her.
*Wait that’s the veil from my dream. Oh no Jamie.” Alex thought.
“Hey Azrael let her out of that thing now.” Alex yelled to Azrael, who was floating in the air chuckling to himself. Jamie was still encased in the veil and had started screaming to be let out.
“Azrael I said let her out!” Alex yelled.
“Heh, if she wants out bad enough she can get out herself.” Azrael said. At that moment there was a tremendous burst of energy from Jamie and the veil disappeared.
“Jamie you okay?” Alex asked as he ran by her side.
“Yeah I’m fine just a little shaky. I never want to be in that thing again.” Jamie said as she shivered slightly and squeezed Alex a bit.
“In there it felt as if I had died. I couldn’t see, feel, or even hear anything. And I felt an incredible sense of death coming from it.” Jamie said recounting her events in the veil. “ I know I was only in there for a few seconds, but it felt like an eternity.”
“I’m sorry Jamie.” Alex said as he rested his chin on top of her head. He slowly released her and turned around to face Azrael.
*I know now without a shadow of a doubt that’s the veil from my dream. But what does it mean?* Alex thought as he looked into Azrael’s cold eyes, and thought for a second he saw something strangely familiar in them.
“Azrael you shouldn’t have put her into your veil. There was no need for that you were just sparring. What if something had happened to her? What then?”
“Simple you would have just healed and we’d be on our merry way. Besides if you had just sparred me in the first place nothing would have happened to the girl.” Azrael said. In that instant Alex realized why Azrael had done what he did to Jamie. It was his way of payback for Alex not sparring him earlier.
“Fine then you want to spar lets spar.” Alex said as his anger grew.
“My pleasure.” Azrael declared.
