~~Chapter 1: Home sweet home…~~

Andy waved to her friends as she walked down the halls of her new high school. Life is great! I'm in high school, I see all my friends, I'm popular…and I'm in all my favorite classes. The only thing that could make life better would be if I could hook up with Mike Wellers! She thought dreamily as she walked into her next class. She was so wrapped up in her thought that she bumped into something hard that snickered in a low sultry voice. She jerked back into reality and realized she had just walked into none other than Mike Wellers himself. "I'm sorry Mike; I must not have seen where I was going." She managed to stutter out as she bent to pick up her books. He followed her down and helped her retrieve some loose papers.

"It's cool, Andy. I wasn't paying full attention either. Hey you have lunch next right?" She nodded a little shocked he knew her name and was actually talking to her. "Great, I wanted to talk to you about something. Can I sit with you so we can talk?" She nodded again. "Great see you in about and hour!" he smiled and headed out to his next class. Mike Wellers, the Mike Wellers, wants to sit with me at lunch and talk. This can't be happening! She thought as she scurried to her seat. She was in such bliss she couldn't concentrate on her class. I wonder what a senior wants to talk to me about any ways. Can't be…her thoughts trailed off as she jerked in her chair. The thought that crossed her mind made her blush a crimson red. Maybe he's going to ask me to the up coming dance! She smiled at her hopeful dreams. The class seemed to drag on and on and finally after what seemed like forever the bell rang and she was one of the first ones out the door. She looked around slowly, trying to find his green Letterman's jacket. "Andy, over here!" she jerked her head to her left at hearing him call her name. She walked cautiously over to him, preying all the way that the combo of her new boots and the many feet in the hall way wouldn't lead to her eating the pavement. She made it over to him and smiled, he led her to the lunch line and they got their food and sat together at a less crowded table.

"So what did you want to talk to me about?" she said as soon as they finished eating. He gulped down the rest of his soda and smiled lightly at her. Her heart skipped a beat; he's got a great smile.

"Well, I was wondering, if you'd…um…like to go to the dance with me. That is if you don't have a date already." He said casually, as if he asked girls on a date his whole life. Duh, why wouldn't he be confident, no girl in her right mind would turn him down. And you're definitely not going to be the first.

"Of course I'll go with you." She smiled and heard the bell ring. She gave a lethal glare to the bell on the wall but then turned back to Mike. She gave him and apologetic look and stood to go throw away her trash and head to her next class. He walked her to her class and then said goodbye. She scurried to her seat and sat dreamy-eyed all the rest of the day. When she finally got home she flopped down on her bed and practically squealed with delight. She looked at her wristwatch and then shot to her closet, to grab her uniform for work. She piled herself into the bathroom and slapped on her thin application of make up and headed out the door. "Hey Johnny, I'm here, any tables to bus?" Her best friend popped his head out the door to the kitchen. He smiled and greeted her.

"Yea, Andy, glasses and plates need to be picked up off tables four, nine and ten. Then when you're done with that just pick up the glasses that need refills." She nodded and went to go do her work. As she walked by the door she greeted Michelle, Johnny's girlfriend. Michelle smiled at her best friend and pointed to the kitchen indicating that she wanted to go talk to Johnny. Andy nodded and went to go finish her work. Johnny was a handsome boy of about sixteen, with sandy blonde hair and pretty green eyes. He had braces, but they fit his features perfectly and didn't stick out or look stupid like they normally did on other people. True, Andy thought he was handsome, but he was like a brother to her. They'd known each other since they were in kindergarten. No matter how much teasing she got, or how much others insisted to Michelle that Andy liked him, she'd never actually consider him as a possible boyfriend. They all knew that, so it didn't matter to them what others said. She was suddenly jerked from her thoughts by a hand groping her butt. She swiftly turned around and glared at the man the hand belonged to. He was in his thirties at the youngest. Her spine shivered from disgust as he stood from his chair to talk to her. His smile was smug and a little too confident.

"Hey pretty thing…Andy" he got her name off her plastic nametag on her shirt. "How about coming home with me when your shift is done?" she turned her back to him and continued on her work. "Oh, C'mon, babe. Don't be so cold. I just want to get to know you." She turned her face away from him as his hand came and traced a line across her cheek. She grabbed her plastic bin with the dishes in it and tried to make her way to the kitchen. He cut her off before she could get behind the counter. "You never answered my question." Her attention was quickly taken away from her to Johnny's father who stood right behind him.

"Is there a problem Andy?" she looked past the man to Rick, Johnny's father. She looked at the man and then back at Rick and pushed her way into the kitchen. The door swung shut and the view of the man being escorted out. She shivered and then went to the sink to put some water on the dishes and wash her face where he had touched her. Rick came back in a few minutes later, and found her washing her face vigorously. "Andy, if you keep on like that you're gonna draw blood." He said jokingly. She smiled half-heartedly. "He's gone. He won't bother you any more."

"I'm sorry, Uncle Rick. I hope I didn't cause too much of a scene. He just scared me. If he didn't pay for his bill then take it out of my check." A few frightened tears rolled down her cheeks and she wiped them away quickly. Rick pulled her into a light hug.

"Nah, you didn't cause a scene. In fact the only reason I came out is because a customer told me he was hassling a waitress. You should have asked for help, Andy. Don't be afraid to call for help."

"I know Uncle Rick, I just thought that if I ignored him, he'd go away." She smiled and straightened her hair and her uniform. "Don't worry Uncle Rick, if it happens again, I'll be sure to ask for help." She smiled and walked to go finish bussing tables. She walked by a table with a group of people sitting and laughing among themselves. One girl pointed at her and all eyes turned to hit her back. She grabbed the plates off the adjacent table and piled them in the bin. The girl who pointed at her got up and walked over to her and placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Hey are you ok? We saw how that guy was acting and we got the owner for you." She paused when Andy looked at her with thankful eyes.

"Yea I'm ok, just a little freaked but other than that I'm cool. Thank you, if you hadn't have done that I don't know what he would have done. Well, I got to get to work, wasted enough time already, but thank you. Thank you so much." She smiled at the girl and turned to walk into the kitchen. She heard the girl call out to her as she left.

"No problem." She smiled and placed the bin next to the sink where Johnny was washing dishes. She smiled and met his worried look with her own relaxed one.

"Call for help next time." Was all he said to her before he continued to wash dishes.

"Yes sir." She said in a mock military manner.

"I mean it! I don't know what I'd do to the creep who tried to hurt you." He said as he hugged his childhood friend.

"I will. I promise!" she returned the hug and turned to go walk back out into the main area of the restaurant. She glanced down at her wristwatch and noticed it was close to six. "Shift's over! Time to go home! Bye Johnny Bye Uncle Rick see you all tomorrow!" She called as she walked past the kitchen door.

"Bye Andy!" they called back in unison. She smiled, he hated to admit it but Johnny was just like his father. She smiled and found her friend Michelle grabbing a milk shake across the street.

"Michelle, can I steal a ride home from you?" Michelle turned and nodded over to her friend.

"Sure, how much will you pay me?" she said playfully.

"I don't have any money" Andy played right back. They giggled and laughed all the way to Andy's house. "Well, Michelle guess I'll see you in school tomorrow."

"Yea. Well I gotta get home now so I'll talk to you later k?" Andy nodded then walked into her house. She walked in to the smell of dinner.

"Mmmmm…Smells good dad." She said as she walked into the kitchen and gave her dad a kiss on the cheek. Her dad gave her a very angry look and she shrank back a few paces. "What's up dad?"

"What's up…I haven't seen you all day and all you have to say is `What's up'? I can't believe you…I just can't believe you!"

"Whoa…dad, what's the matter? What did I do wrong?"

"Well, you wake up, go to school, come home, leave your crap every where, and go to work. What do you expect me to do, pick up after you? I've got a job that when I come home I don't want to come home and clean, I just want to relax. But no, you don't think about that now do you? You only think about yourself. Well, if it happens again, I'll leave it just the way it is." He finished shooting daggers and death glares at her. She looked down at the floor and breathed in a deep breath trying to steady her rising tears.

"I'm sorry, I didn't think it was that much of a mess. I'll pick it up when I come home tomorrow." She took a drink from the fridge and went to go do her homework. God, I wonder why dad flipped off the deep end because I left my books on the couch? I mean it's not that big a deal. Maybe he had a bad day at work. She thought trying to let the situation pass. She started on her homework and was soon finished; she walked out of her room and saw that her step mom was there. She smiled and then walked in to the kitchen to grab a plate of dinner. "How long has dinner been done?" she questioned innocently. Her step mom glared at her and then looked at her dad.

"Why going to complain some more?"

"No I was just wondering why no one called me for dinner." She said quietly and looked down at her plate. They ate the meal in relative silence, she didn't dare open her mouth any more and get her head chewed off. She walked to her room at the end of the meal and stayed there until it was time to go to sleep. Tomorrows another day…she trailed off into a deep sleep.
