Ruble and bloodstains were scattered throughout the scenery. There were several groups of soldiers crouched in the scant bushes and hidden all throughout the rubble. Smoke seemed to emanate from the ground its self as the solders waited. Behind the solders, the forest had once been lush and green, but as soon as the enemy appeared, the forest wilted and shriveled.

The soldiers themselves were not in uniform or seemed to have any kind of dress code. Some of the men wore nothing but their shorts or pants and their guns. Amongst the men were several women that had decided to help in the fight against the aliens. The solders tensed as they all heard a noise in the distance. For a long moment no one moved. It seemed as if the whole group was holding their breaths. Then there they were. The enemy was there. The group sprang in to action in unison making it seem as if they all received some unseen and unheard signal.

The troops fired at the aliens and the aliens fired back. Lasers were flying everywhere. All around there were people falling to the ground. One girl twisted and turned, easily dodging every laser that came her way. There was a loud blast from somewhere to the left of her. The girl pulled out her sword and sliced through one of the alien fighters, and then she spun around just in time to catch another right through the neck before he could fire off a single shot.

The ground trembled and trees started to fall. A monstrous ship came down from the sky and made the entire area quiver. The ship landed and most of the aliens disappeared into the belly of the ship. The ship reared up and started to fire at everyone and everything. Lasers were flying into everyone and everything. Her entire being quivered. The air was so silent it seemed as if the world had suddenly stopped spinning. All she could think about was getting back to the camp... back to her sister. Around her, the troops were heading back. Everybody was running back to the camp. Lasers were shooting all around her and striking down the troops. As the troops fell to the ground, she reached into her holster and pulled out her gun. The gun glinted in the sunlight. All the aliens looked towards the light but quicker than they could react she had killed the whole group of shooters that had not retreated into the ship.

One of the member, not much older than her was lying in the dirt crying for her to help him. She ran to him and easily hoisted him onto her shoulders and ran into the forest. There were people all around her scattering into the forest, making their way back home. She ran quickly and was soon several miles away from the fighting zone and deep into the forest. There was suddenly a blast so loud it shook the very roots of the trees although the blast had happened back at the fighting zone several miles away. She fell to the ground with the man still on her shoulders as the blast made all the trees bend and sway in the sudden gust of wind.

When the ground and the trees stopped swaying and shaking, the girl pushed the man off her and got up. The man had passed out from the stress of explosion and the pain from his wound. Looking at it closely, she could see that the wound was more serious than she had originally thought it was. His wound was deep. His chest gaped with a large burn hole. The lasers were hot enough to burn the wound enough so that it was not bleeding but it looked as if it went all the way through him. She flipped him over so that he was lying on his back and saw that the wound actually did go all the way through him. He was still breathing and he had a pulse so the laser had somehow not hit his heart or lungs. She was amazed that this man has survived the shock, let alone the damage from the laser shot.

Looking closer, she realized that this man was a stranger. She gasped when she realized she did not know who this man was, for she knew everyone that had survived the first wave of aliens and had hidden down in the caves of the forest. There had not been many survivors. The aliens had been clever. They said they wanted peace and landed all over the cities and had the population matched two aliens for every person. Then, after living with the people for a year, just long enough to gain their trust they opened fire and slaughtered most of the people. Only a few survived and the numbers have been slowly declining.

There were only about five hundred people left, and now there were even fewer people after this last encounter with the aliens. There was no telling how many were left or even if any were still alive after that last blast. The girl examined the man's face to see if there was some clue as to where he had come from. The people had been fighting for eight years, there were not many people left, and there were almost no weapons left.

The man could not be more than twenty-five at the most. He was very handsome. It had been a longtime since she had seen anyone her age that seemed the least bit attractive to her. His hair, unusually short and his fur was an even tan-ish brown color. He had no particular markings that she could see. His left ear has a hole on the outside curve slightly below the point. The ears were the same as a cat’s and had a little tuft of fir on the very top. The girl laughed aloud. She had never seen anyone with fur on the top of their ears before, and she could not help but notice that the fur on his hands was a little bit shorter than was normal. The man had on dark green pants with many pockets on them. He had a gun that looked a lot like her own on his side in a holster. She looked again to the hole on his bare chest and decided to get him to the holding, there would be time for examining later.

She sighed and hoisted the man back onto her shoulders. As she started to run again, she heard him groan and felt him start to move a little. As she ran, the jostling made him pass out again from pain and shock. The girl smiled a little and thought that at least her job would be a little easier with him passed out.

The girl slowed and stopped by a large tree and slid between the roots. She quickly landed on the floor beneath the root and knocked a precise pattern on the root of the tree. The root popped up a little then swung open to reveal a small boy about ten or so. “Welcome back how did it go? Same as last time? Did a lot die? Should I expect a lot of wounded?” The boy fired off rapid questions.

His eyes fell upon the man slung across her shoulders. “Who is that?”

The girl chuckled and answered his questions. “Hello Quip, lots died, I don’t think a lot of people that were wounded survived.” The girl shifted and put the man down on the floor. “I? I don’t know who this is. He was fighting on our side, so he is one of us, but he is from elsewhere. I don’t know; he called out for help so I helped him. I need to get him into the hospital wing soon, those wounds need looking for, and they could be more serious than they look. Maybe we can even get it to heal solid again.

With that, the girl hoisted the man onto her shoulders and headed down the hall. Quip looked after her a moment and yelled. “Good luck, San!” San smiled and turned the corner. As soon as she rounded the corner, a bunch of children surrounded her with questions.

All wanted to know something about what had happened above, and they all wanted to ask at once. So many little faces and voices demanding to know what happened to a love one or wanting to know how the battle went. San just pushed through them and didn’t answer any questions.

San knew if she stopped for even one question, then she would be there for hours trying to answer all these little children’s questions. San kept going and made it to the next hall where there were no children to bother her with questions.
