San entered the hospital wing to find it totally empty. This man was lucky today. San was the fastest runner out of everybody in the holding and even with the added weight, she had gotten here first. She put the man down on the bed and went into the next room where the nurse was. “Jute, we have a bit of a problem, a man over on the bench has a hole through his chest, it burnt shut so it is not bleeding much, but it definitely needs attention.” Jute looked at San suspiciously, and nodded.

“San, it is very unlike you to bring any one back, I thought it was everyone for themselves out there. Who is this man, you didn’t say a name.” San looked at Jute and smiled. She knew her way to well, and saw that something wasn’t quite normal about this. Jute walked with San back to the bed and looked at the face of the man. Jute’s breath caught in her throat and she knew why San had not said a name; she did not know his name.

Jute thoroughly inspected the wound and brought out gauze and an ointment. Jute gently rubbed a bit of the ointment onto the wound and worked some of it into the wound. She then turned the man over onto his stomach and rubbed some of the ointment into the hole from the other side. Jute then instructed San to hold him up so that she could rap the bandage around him. When this was finished, she looked to San.

“You might as well take him to you’re quarters, he will need to come back in two days for me to check up on that and make sure it’s not getting infected. In the mean time I know there will probably be a shortage of space here, so it would just be a waist for him to be here.” Jute looked to San and smiled.

“Your sister has been here three times looking for you and seeing if anyone that has been hurt has arrived yet. She worries about you when you go fight.” Jute smiled and tossed San a silver disk about the size of a half-dollar. “There you are; extra rations coin for him if he awakes.” Jute winked at San as she picked up the man and headed towards the door.

San walked along the corridors in silence. She had purposely taken the long way to avoid the mass of children that were sure to swarm her with their questions if she went through them again. As she was walking, San’s mind was numb; her whole body ached from the fatigue that had started to set in. San was the most agile and the fastest but it took a lot out of her. By the time she got to her quarters, she was about ready to collapse. San took the necklace from her neck and slid the card into the slot. The door opened quickly and smacked her in the forehead. San’s little sister was sitting on one of the two beds and looked up as she entered. San walked in and put the man down on the other bed, shut the door, and sat down on the bed next to her sister.

“Hi Ro. I’m home and whole.” San looked over at her sister who looked up at her and smiled. Ro pointed to the man and tilted her head to the left. “I don’t know who he is? he was helping fight and got wounded. I picked him up and ran back. There was a huge explosion when I had gotten about two miles away and it was still enough of a blast that it knocked me down. I think it killed all the others, but I’m not sure. It’s a good thing that this man called for help and I answered because if I hadn’t? we both would have been there at the explosion. I saved his life and he saved mine.

“I am not sure how long it will take until there are more who get here, but I know they will probably send out a search party tomorrow morning but I won’t go. I am tired and I need to sleep. I don’t know what made me pick up that stranger, but it is a good thing I am sure of it. Wake me if he wakes up and you are not asleep OK Ro?” Ro nodded and San stretched out on the bed and Ro laid her head on San’s shoulder. San put her hand on Ro’s head and drifted off into a healing dreamless sleep.
