Fan Fiction ❯ She Chose Death ❯ Is Death The End ( Chapter 2 )
Chapter 2: Is Death The End
Noah had been studying for hours that afternoon. His headphones were gracing his ears with loud rock music blaring from the small foam speakers. He brushed a lock of hair back from his eyes trying to read about the history of the U.S. from 1876 to present day. The soft glow of the lamp was instantly killed by the bright overhead light as his roommate flipped the switch in an attempt to get the young man's attention.
&nbs p; "Dah!" he yelped. "Dude, what is it? It better be good…" His words faded away upon seeing his roommate's expression. "…Aaron?"
&nbs p; Aaron brushed his hand through his dark brown hair and as his soft hazel eyes regarded the questioning man on the bed. He didn't know how to tell him, she was his best friend, whether or not either of them would admit it. Shoving his hands into his pockets Aaron tried his best to force the words out of his reluctant mouth.
&nbs p; "Its about Ann…She got in a car wreck…" he stumbled over the words of pain. After all, she was a really nice girl, he wouldn't have minded getting to know her better…
&nbs p; Noah sat up to attention letting his book drop to a disheveled heap of paper and cardboard on the blue carpeted floor.
&nbs p; "Oh my God, is she ok?" Noah asked, his voice disturbingly shaken. Aaron's hesitant answer caused the college student's heart to jump into his throat and he began to fear the worst. Aaron's brief silence was heavy on both of them, until his lips finally moved and a voice came from them. A soft, sad voice.
&nbs p; "I'm sorry Noah…she's gone." He swallowed quickly trying to get this life changing conversation over with. "They determined it was suicide…"
&nbs p; Feeling his icy blue eyes brim with tears Noah walked over to his desk to grab his keys and phone.
&nbs p; "No, we're going to the hospital and she's going to be ok." He announced to his roommate in denial. He paused seeing his phone blink at him.
One Missed Call.
His fingers shook as he pushed the buttons on the phone.
Ann @ 5:47 PM
"Aaron…" Noah begin as he stared in horror at the phone. "What time did this happen?"
Leaning against the doorway Aaron looked down answering.
"Around six o'clock."
They had left immediately, or rather as soon as one of them was stable enough to actually make the drive to the hospital. Aaron put himself at the wheel of his Miata while Noah sat silently in the passenger's seat next to him. They parked in the large parking garage of the hospital. Noah didn't even wait for Aaron to turn the engine off before he opened his door and hurriedly ran for the elevator doors. He waited impatiently as he watched the glowing numbers reach his floor. Aaron walked up calmly behind him, his hands shoved nervously in his pockets.
&nbs p; They rushed through the hospital until they reached the information desk. Noah's voice was shaky as he inquired to his friend's whereabouts. The night shift nurse of an older age answered in a monotone voice.
&nbs p; "She's on the intensive care floor. That would be floor eight, go left here and take the elevator." she instructed flatly.
&nbs p; Angry for this woman's apathy, but in too much of a hurry to complain, Noah and Aaron made their way to the eighth floor. After being checked out and informed of the rules by a rather more pleasant nurse, the two friends found themselves being guided down the quiet halls of the eighth floor.
The middle-aged woman opened the door softly and sadly stated, "You may stay if you like. No family has come for her yet."
Not hearing the helpful words of the woman Noah walked up to the end of the bed staring intensely at the mangled figure of his best friend laying before him. She was unrecognizable. The skin of her once beautiful face was torn away for the most part. Most of her limbs were in casts hanging this way and that above the bed. Her pulse on the monitor was slow…very slow. Running a hand through his sandy colored hair, Noah sat next to her on the bed, taking her cold distorted hand in his. With his other hand we wiped at the tears, the thoughts of her bright face just earlier that afternoon.
"I'm so sorry, Ann. If I had known…no. Even if I had known, I shouldn't have said it no matter what. I'm so sorry! Please Ann. Don't die. Not now, we just got started. There's so much for you left here…" he found himself weeping with his words. I love you…
Aaron leaned against the doorway and walked over to place a supporting hand on his roommate's shoulder. He blinked back the tears that misted his hazel eyes. He looked up to the monitor. His eyes widened and in a panic he looked down at Noah. He hadn't realized it yet. Perhaps he won't unless something is said. Reassuring what he had seen, Aaron brought his eyes back to the screen. Should he tell him? Should he tell Noah that her life line just went flat?
It was a warm dark liquid it seemed. She swam around in it peacefully for quite some time enjoying herself in this freedom. Was this really death? With a warm and good feeling all over? She wouldn't mind an eternity like this. Here she could imagine her life…or rather death away. Smiling and curling up into a balmy ball of flesh she let her imagination that had cursed her in life flow freely in her mind. A soft light began to fade into her dark world. She opened her eyes and blinked down at the site forming before her with curiosity. A smile stretched across her lips and her eyes gleamed as a world began to manifest before her. She was doing it, the world she had imagine in her head was there right before her! In its majestic beauty she watched as she felt herself being pulled towards it. Stars were appearing as well as two moons beside her while the planet grew closer and closer.
Ann looked with awe at the green continents and dark blue oceans of this new world. Tears brimmed her eyes. She recognized this place alright. She had visited it many times in her dreams…
She floated past the clouds, getting a much clearer glimpse of this part of the world. It was a heavily forested area, thick with beautiful trees and wildlife. Ann closed her brown eyes as she enjoyed the feeling of freefalling down to the surface of the world. She couldn't feel the humidity of climate as she felt herself being pulled with stronger force through the thick brush. Opening her eyes she looked in wonder as a clearing came up before her. She could see a small village with small houses and huts. Very modest with only a single well at the edge of the town. She saw several bald men in light cotton robes walking around the small establishment. Quirking a brow she laughed.
"Monks! How cute!" she exclaimed happily. "But I want to see something else…like a dragon."
Moving her limbs about Ann made an attempt to turn her body in another direction. Her eyes widen, because suddenly to her distress she couldn't. She closed her eyes and tried to will herself away…Nothing worked. She couldn't understand why this would be happening if she was controlling the world. She turned to face the direction in which she was going. She headed straight for the largest and most refined building in the village. Ann looked on with awe at the guardians of this establishment, thankful that she would not have to face the two small chimera's that stood at the entrance.
Then she felt it. She had been waiting all of her dull miserable life to have this feeling. To be in this presence. She felt the magic that surrounded the small temple. As soon as she passed through the heavy wooden doors her vision became a blur. All she could see was that the environment around her was lit by dim candles. A million voices flooded into Ann's ears as she felt this pull. Some of them were violently whispered as other piercing screams overcame them. It was so confusing. Her vision all but gone and a sea of voices murmuring into her ears and brain and pouring into her very being.
It was sudden and it was painful. Her newfound body jolted awake stiffly in the confined space she found herself in. The new eyelids literally cracking as she blinked in the soft light. She felt the top layer of her skin fall away with her movement, her hands flailing in the air. Ann's long slender digits flew above her body until they hit a smooth cold surface. Recognizing the feel of glass the student quickly tried to calm her breathing before she went into a state of hyperventilation. Despite her best efforts, Ann went into a panic and swiftly sat up pushing on the glass, having not even bothered to gather in other surroundings.
To her surprise the cover was light and came off easily sending it to the floor shattering the six foot long piece into jagged particles. Ann's arms flew up to her face protectively as the shards flew every which way about the room. It was now that she looked up and realized she was in a physical realm. It was now that she realized she was alive again…and this world was not the one she controled.
