Some Thoughts On Writing...

*********************************

This was brought on by a forum I stumbled upon when searching for some Crawford/Aya-fics a couple of days ago. They had one thread where they were making fun of bad yaoi-fics, something that I didn't liked the least. I didn't read it all, only the WK ones, but this made me very angry.

Writing is a learning experience, something you grow with and everyone can be very selfconscious about their works. One is one's own greatest admirerer as well as one's own greatest critic, but to have your work flamed like that can't be fun. Constructive criticism is one thing - you might learn some valuable points on how to make your fic work, but how the hell can you ever learn anything when you get your work mauled like that?

Some of the ones who were flaming the fics said that they themselves couldn't have done it any better - but why the hell bother to make fun of someone else's work then? I can't find the point in that, sorry...

Every author pour something of themselves into their work. Everyone does, one way or another. It takes a lot of guts to post something that you have written yourself and that is something you're proud of. Something you've worked on, spent several hours - if not days - to write down. To have it ripped apart like that can make everyone want to give up.

Even if I might not agree with the fic and how it was written, it's plain rude and unnecessary to carry out an execution of the author like that. If I don't like the fic, then I can say so in a nice way. I can point out what might be wrong to help the author to develop for the next one.

They mostly discussed lime/lemon-fics, and while I love to read them, there is nothing worse than writing them. To expose a part of yourself in that way is very hard and it doesn't help if someone is going to make fun of it when it's done. I don't know how many of you agree with me on this, but to write about sex is really hard, despite the over-sexed world we live in today - and it's still a very tense subject. And even if an author can't pull it off in a style that will make everyone drool doesn't matter that they can't learn to do that. As I've already said, writing is a learning experience and not everyone can or will win any prize for their works. That doesn't mean that they can't be good or bad - it means that everyone can and will grow with their works in one way or another. To hammer someone down into the ground just because they "can't" write a perfect lemon now won't help that writer the least. More likely they're going to give up - and how will they ever know if they could have been any better then? Some of the fics I read there are by what I would like to call talented authors and frankly I can't see why they were being discussed - but I guess that they rubbed them the wrong way or something... Sad...

Some of the fics were by authors who might have some way to go, but can be good ones when they get there. They have potential and I really hope that they try and develop as authors in the future too. Everyone can write, in one way or another as long as you've got the imagination. The rest will follow then; style and grammar and spelling as well as originality.

I don't know why I'm even bothering to write this - and no, I didn't find any of my own fics there (even if I hadn't been surprised if some of them had found their way over there... I've got some really, really bad ones... *shudders*) - but I guess that I thought I had something to say about the matter. Did I? I don't know... I just wanted to state my own opinion on this and that I hope that people will think twice before completely kill off someone else's work. No one deserves that.

Okay, I'm done "preaching" for the day now! :)
