Chapter 2: What happened?
Terra awoke to find herself in that old warehouse Robin had situated as “camp”. Another cup of hot chocolate rested on the bedside table, the white clouds of steam issuing from, it indicating that it was still hot, brushing against her face. Robin sat in a dark corner him eyes wide open and staring forward. “Its about time you woke up.” Robin's voice echoed around the room. Terra felt her skin crawl, like some immortal adversary would stalk from the shadows and fight her. But Terra had a different reason. She had utterly failed everyone. In her mind, she knew she was the Teen Titans only hope in being revived.
“Robin,” she said to the shadows, sitting up, tears trickling down her cheeks, “I'm so sorry.” And with that she burst out crying. “I failed, I miserably failed. Don't be angry. Please. I don't want to be any more alone than I am now.
“Um, Terra?” said Robin's voice echoing around the room once more. “I don't mind, really.” His shadowy form walked forward and placed a friendly hand on Terra's shoulder. “You actually did much better than I had expected you to do.”
“Really?” Terra's question was met by silence. Robin straightened up and walked casually to the small kitchen. Sunlight started pouring through the rafters. Terra got up slowly. “Um, Robin?” she asked in a meek voice. “How exactly did, um, you know, um, how did that happen?” Robin sighed.
“I knew this was coming. Make yourself comfy, as this will take a while.
“Raven was destined to bring doomsday to earth, we all knew this. We believed that we were all prepared for that battle. Cyborg spent a small fortune in upgrades, Beast boy and I were in the training room 24/7 and as for Star, well, she went home get some training done. When the day finally arrived, we were fit and prepared, and we were all out eating pizza, the usual procedure. Then the skies turned black, and Raven got all mystical and walked to the Titans Tower. We don't know how, but 5 seconds later the entire city was obliterated in one blow. It was just pure luck that we even survived. Starfire was the first to recover. She helped us out of the rubble, and together we made our stand.” Robin stopped and inhaled sharply. He wiped some sweat from his brow and exhaled. Finally, he continued. “He was unstoppable Terra, unstoppable! And we had thousands of Hive students joining our side! But one flash of his eyes. Just one! And we found ourselves immobilized and turning foot first into the Feng Shui of what was left of Jump City.” By now, Robin's knuckles had made a loud cracking sound and forming a fist would crush solid steel. “We had lost,” he said through gritted teeth. “We had lost and we hadn't laid a finger on him. It was a horrendous beast, bigger than anything we had ever faced, and we lost so badly…”
“Robin, maybe you should stop and…”
“No Terra, I have to get over this. Now I don't know how, but I believe Raven's father had the power to choose over whom he wanted to turn to stone permanently. And he obviously chose to Stone those who stood in his path of destruction.” Robin looked down. “And I wasn't one of them.” Terra blinked in surprise.
“But as far as I know, you probably could've kicked its butt. I bet that if it was as big as you, you'd give it a wallop,” said Terra encouragingly.
“But it wasn't!” shouted Robin. “I wasn't considered a threat because I don't have superpowers. I'm just another human.”
“But surely you did something to it. I mean the world isn't gone yet, is it?”
“I don't what happened, but it's in the past.” Robin got up and opened a cupboard. He took out a mouse that was made from stone. “Terra, I have a goal to set for you. I want to you to un-stone this mouse.” Terra looked at the mouse bleakly.
“Are you sure it was once real?” she asked, making sure it wasn't a trick.
“I'm certain,” said Robin, flashbacks of one of his old chemistry experiments dancing in his head.
Terra exhaled. She had trouble doing this and was more tired than she ever thought before. She fell to the ground, panting. Jeez, she thought, I'm not getting anywhere with this. “Break?” she asked intently, a pleading look in her eyes. Robin nodded and slightly, then took out his staff.
“Go and get some rest,” he told. She looked in his eyes. They betrayed no expression. He passed her without any hesitation. But as Terra lay back on her bed, all hot and sweaty, she began to think about the morning's story. It all didn't make sense to her. Robin felt helpless. Terra knew that Robin was always way to over confident and proud of himself, and yet, that one loss seemed to shatter him. But what Terra was worrying about was how that huge demon suddenly disappeared. Couldn't it just suddenly reappear again? And what about Jump City? It was a hellhole! Yet there were Buildings and people, just like there was before. Except for the huge numbers of criminals, nothing had changed. But the Titans were stone, and the entire city was a hive of decease and all sorts of junk. Finally, Terra came to a conclusion. Robin was hiding something, and Terra was going to find out. She thought about getting up and looking around, but the bed was so inviting. Finally, Terra sank into sleep.
“Very good my apprentice.” Slade clenched his fist tightly. “You are using your feelings to fight. But for the wrong cause.” Lightning flashed around them, pupil and master. “Now is the age of villains. But which one is up to you.”
“Slade, you are mysterious as usual.” And with that, the pupil ran to the master ready for combat.
