Chapter 1
"Grandpa! What happened next!" squealed a small girl from her comfortable place on her grandfather's knee. Her eyes wide with excitement from the intriguing story. Her grandfather laughed stroking his mustache.
"No one knows, dear Sophia, but till this day, Keiza's statue has remained at the center of town, not one bit damaged by weather," he whispered with a twinkle in his baby blue eyes. A snort sounded from across the room causing the two of them to snap out their little world. There lounged on the couch holding a comic, which was upside down, was the eldest child of Morgan family Chett.
"That's just a phearie-tale, it's not true, defies all laws of science," he said looking back at the comic book. With a jump of surprise he realized it was upside down and whipped it the right way. His grandfather smiled. Chett loved the story of Keiza, he just didn't show it. The little girl scrunched her nose up at her brother and he returned it with a scowl.
"Don't bother with him Sophia, he's just a teenager," Ms. Morgan, their mother, said from her place in the kitchen. Sophia, smiled and made a face at her brother. Chett smirked and sat up getting ready to get off his comfy place on the couch. Sophia's eyes widened and she hopped off her grandfather's knee and was out of the den in ten seconds flat.
Ms. Morgan rolled her eyes, "Must you-" She was interrupted by the doorbell sounding throughout the house. Sighing she got off her chair and left the room to answer the door. Chett returned to his original position readying to read the comic when a loud voice was heard from the door way.
"Ello, Ms. Morgan, is Chett home?" it yelled and Chett rolled his eyes. The voice continued down the hall until two boys stood in the doorway. One a had a slanted grin on his face, his shaggy hair obscuring his view. The other held a bored expression his hands stuffed in his jean pockets. Chett grinned, getting off the couch completely. Ms. Morgan entered the den again.
"Are you heading out Chett?" she asked smiling at the two boys. Chett shrugged and the boy with shaggy hair shrugged with him. She nodded and headed to her chair again, "Tell me if you are going out before you do." Chett and the boys nodded.
"Let's go to my room then," he said and the boy with shaggy hair took off up the stairs, the other and Chett fallowing at a lazy pace. When they got in there one of the boys turned.
"Guess what!" he said excitedly while Chett and the other sat on chairs. Chett shrugged throwing his comic into the corner, along with his other comics. The comic book hit the wall and landed on the pile, creating a small avalanche.
"Alright, today is the exact day one hundred years ago, today, that the princess Keiza turned herself to stone!" he said flopping backwards onto the bottom buck of Chett's bed. Chett laughed.
"Man, Ben, you still believe in that story!" Chett asked and the other boy laughed. Ben frowned at them, throwing a pillow at Chett. Chett dogged the pillow laughing.
"It's a cool story, and some odd things have been happening near the statue recently," Ben said shrugging. Chett stopped laughing, Ben was right there has been some odd things happening near the statue lately. Chett looked at the other boy.
"Do you still believe in that story, Nick?" Chett asked. Nick turned and shrugged holding a small figurine of a car in his large hands. Chett watched him.
"I'm starting to again, I could have sworn I was someone just like her, leaning against the statue, but I turned to Ben and when we both looked, she was gone," Nick said, his voice husky, slightly seductive. He was a handsome boy who, if he wanted to he could be instantly popular. He wasn't though, because he chose Ben and Chett as friends.
Chett had a rugged kind of boyish look to him. He stood at an amazing 6' and a strong build. His hair was a lightly sandy brown and he had emerald colored irises. When he smiled it turned out to be a wolfish grin.
Ben had a complete boyish feature, and a large grin constantly plastered on his face. He was the shortest of the three and stood at 5'7" and had a head of shaggy blonde hair. His baby blue eyes sparkled mischievously at all times.
Nick was the mysterious one of their small group. Never giving a smile in public and was a very quiet man. He was the tallest of the three standing at 6'3". His eyes where a dark brown, so dark they made them seem black. They matched his black hair, giving him a dark evil look.
"Well, we should head over to Nick's house, and on our way there, we can check out the statue," Ben said getting off of the bed leaving it in a mess. Nick shrugged getting up from the chair as Chett got up too. Ben by now was out the door and down the hallway, his large feet stomping loudly. Nick and Chett fallowed him down the stairs slowly, Chett yawning loudly.
“Mom, I’m going over to Nick’s house! Be back around ten!” Chett yelled before closing the door. The three walked down the lonely streets of the small town in a small line. It was nearing darkness, with the sun merely there. Not many people walked the streets of Blackington at night. Strange things happened at night there. People turned up nearly mad in alley ways, people went missing without a trace, and some were murdered in a odd fashion.
“Come on dudes! Being out here this close to dark makes me nervous!” Ben said from the front. Nick shrugged looking around. Chett smiled.
Something crashed from behind them, causing the boys to turn in a rush. Something ran into alley, only a blur. Ben yelped and Chett and Nick turned quickly. Ben was already nearing the corner to the street that led to Nick’s house. The boys chased after him quickly without a second thought
Once they were in the safe combines of the Black house Nick bolted the door. Chett fell against the wall and Ben fell flat out on the marble floor. Barking came from the kitchen along with the scrambling of claws against the floor. A huge malamute dog flew into the room at full speed, intent on reaching the three boys.
“Uh oh,” Ben whispered his eyes widened at the approaching dog. He had only enough time to curl up in a ball before he was mauled with dog spit. Nick chuckled walking pulling the hyper dog away fro Ben who was shaking of laughter.
“Well, I’m off to Nick’s room, after that little run I think I would just like to sit down for a bit,” Chett said walking up the stairs towards Nick’s room. As he walked along the staircase, a painting caught his eye. It was a painting of princess Keiza, but it wasn’t how it should be. Nick was a direct descendent of the Black family, which was Keiza Black’s family. Nick was considered royalty.
The painting showed a women clad in a dark black velvet black simple dress sitting on a wall. A black cloak was laying on the edge recklessly and one of her black shoes were missing. Her face was face of a sad women, one who has seen things she didn’t want to see, shouldn’t have seen. Her silver eyes were glazed over, not seeing anything, yet everything. Something was off though and, Chett couldn’t place what it was.
The loud stomping of Ben’s feet sounded behind him and he turned to greet him. Nick was looking at the painting with an expression of confusion. Chett looked back at the painting. Ben peered past Chett’s shoulder and at the painting, wondering what had caught his two friends attention. It was then that he noticed something in the painting.
“Why is there a cat on her lap, there wasn’t one there a week ago…” Ben whispered, feeling the need to be quiet. Chett and Nick’s eyes were drawn to her lap, where indeed, a small black cat sat upon her lap licking its left front paw. It was a thin cat, looking like it was barely able to live and it’s striking amber eyes glared at the boys as though it could see them. Nick made a noise and before the other two boys could blink he was down the stairs and heading towards his father’s study.
Quickly the two boy’s fallowed after him quickly, arriving just after the door was opened. Nick’s father stood there, his glasses hanging from one ear.
“Father, I think there’s something you’d like to see,” Nick said, his voice calm as his father raised an eyebrow. He looked back into his study, fixing his askew glasses. Sighing he looked back at the three boys.
“What is it?” he asked, his voice rough and sharp, a complete opposite of Nick’s smooth voice. Nick motioned for his father to fallow and was heading back towards the stair case. His father fallowed with Chett and Ben bringing up the rear. When the arrived at the painting Nick’s father looked at Nick as though his son has lost his mind.
“Nicolas, I walk past this everyday, at least four times-” his father’s words trailed off as he noticed the cat on her lap. He looked at it again a frown crossing his features. Nick looked at the painting again, jumping when he thought he saw the cat blink. He looked over at Chett who was looking at him.
“Nicolas? Who did this? Do you know how much this painting is worth! More than you’d ever guess!” yelled his father, his face red and his hands in fists. Ben looked at him his expression a mix of fright and amusement.
“Father, Chett was the one who noticed it first, none of us have done that,” Nick suggested and his father calmed down looking at the painting then the boys. Ben looked at him, raising an eyebrow. Nick and Chett looked at him and then the painting. His father walked off stomping his feet loudly. Ben shrugged looking out at the dark sky. Chett looked out of the window after Ben. A smirk came to his mouth as an idea came to mind.
“Hey, why don’t we go check out Keiza’s statue?” he asked, Ben gave him a look and Nick’s eyes widened as if to say “Are you crazy?” Chett grinned wolfishly at them winking.
“Chett, you have seriously dropped of the cliff of the sane! We can’t go out there!” Ben whispered sharply at the boy who shrugged walking up the stairs again. Nick raised an eyebrow.
“I was joking, I know we can’t go out there, we’ll just check it out in the morning… but I’m tired, so I’m bunking here,” he said turning away from the two boys who both gave a sigh of relief. Chett laughed at them, as he turned the corner into Nick’s room.
Nick’s room was a normal sized room, neat and organized, the only problem was that there was so much stuff, you could not even see the walls. His mother traveled around the world, bringing back amazing gifts from other countries. She started traveling when Nick was ten years old and hasn’t been home for more than two months at a time in the past six years.
Nick and Ben entered the room behind him.

Hours later when Nick and Ben were asleep. Ben tossing recklessly under the bottom bunk. Nick lay perfectly still on the top bunk, while Chett laid awake listening to the breathing of the boys. Every time he closed his eyes her say the cat that was in Keiza’s lap. Something was happening, and had to do with her statue.
Getting out of the bed, Chett went to Nick’s closet, knowing that he would find a cloak there. Opening it he found the cloak and slipped it on, walking to the door. He had to check it out or he would get no sleep. He crept down the stairs quietly stopping at the painting. The cat remained where it was but the eyes seemed to watch him closely. He shivered and walked on quickly reaching the doors.
Sighing her braced himself before opening the door, stepping out into the dark streets of Blackington. The streets were clouded with a thick fog, so thick that you couldn’t see more than a foot away from you. He looked around nervously before setting out into the dark foggy streets.
He past only two unfortunate people along his course to the statue. Both of which scurried away from him, the cloak giving him a dark appearance. He smiled feeling safe behind his dark costume.
When he arrived at the statue, something seemed off. He stepped closer to the statue, his eyes widening when he saw the problem.
The statue was crumbling, only at the hem of her dress and sleeves. He frowned looking at the statue up and down. Slowly he brought his hand to the statue, stopping just before touching the statue. Then, he placed it on the hem of her dress.
Almost immediately the world around him began to fade, causing Chett to jump away from the statue. Yet, the world still managed to diminish, right before his eyes. When it stopped he was in a place totally surrounded by darkness, everywhere he looked there was nothing but black.
“What do we have here?” a soft feminine voice said to the left of him. He turned in a flash and was greeted with the sight of what he thought was a dream, there stood princess Keiza. He stepped backwards happy that his face was concealed by his hood. She watched him closely.
“Who are you?” he asked, his voice shaking in his fear. She raised an eyebrow at him. She looked so real but she couldn’t be, she has been dead for 100 years.
“Princess Keiza of course,” she said, her words flowing out in a stream of smooth and thick vowels and consonants. He shook his head. Chett took another step backwards but the women did nothing to stop him.
“You can’t be her, she died over 100 years ago,” he said, trying to add confidence to his shaking voice. She laughed when he said that, it was only a small one, not horrible and high pitched like most teenaged girls her age.
“I didn’t die, merely conserved my body and soul, for a time when I was needed again, and it seems boy, that I am needed,” she said looking around at the darkness, “Let’s change the scene why don’t we.” With her last word, the darkness started to shift into that of a crowded forest, heavy with trees.
“That’s not possible, defies all laws of science,” he whispered watching her sit by a large tree. She patted the spot beside her, “Come sit, and tell me your name.” Chett hesitated before walking over to sit beside her.
“No it doesn’t defy all laws of science, there are just some laws of science that hasn’t been discovered yet. Magick may be a law of science or science may be a law of magick, we may never know,” she said looking at him softly. Chett nodded, that made sense.
“So why did you allow me in here?” he asked looking at her past his hood. There was something about the princess that made him want to believe her. She smiled shaking her head.
“I didn’t allow you into the statue, the necklace did,” she explained placing her hand on the dark diamond, “Why do you conceal your face so?” He looked at her slowly lifting his hands to the hood, sliding it down to reveal his face. She smiled softly, but it didn’t reach her eyes, they remained as cold and hard as silver stone.
“Your necklace allowed me into the statue?” he asked and she nodded a reply as he continued, “Why must you return?”
She looked around thoughtfully before answering him, “I have been seeing things, things that can endanger both worlds. The necklace I more powerful than even I know, it wants me to return to the world of the living, but I need a way, a human to help me out, for I am no longer human.” She looked back at Chett who was having difficulties digesting the information given to him.
“So the necklace chose me as your way out?” he asked looking at the small dark diamond that hung around her neck. It pulsed and seemed to swirl as if liquid.
“Exactly, Chett Morgan, descendant of the greatest warrior in history, Menfred Morgan,” she whispered.
