The Forest of Eternal Evil
By Charlie Kirby
Mitsurugi had been traveling through Japan for a while now. He was going from Edo back to Bizen to visit his old master, Master Shonto*. But, while traveling through The Forest of Eternal Evils, he runs into an evil he cannot overcome.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Mitsurugi stood in the center of the dirt road, holding his sword in his hand and looking to the forest that lay before. It was the Forest of Eternal Evils. The legends told of how it could find the strongest warrior’s weakness, and use it to destroy him. Most walked around it, but Mitsurugi was strong and in a hurry. So he continued.
The forest was dark, with only shafts of light peering down from the tall trees. Mitsurugi kept his steps silent and quick, his eyes darting and alert, his ears open and listening for any warning the twigs and leaves would give him. He was in the middle of the forest when it came out.
Talim: HEY!
<Mitsurugi turned around and held his sword out before him>
Mitsurugi: Beware my blade, demon of wrath!
Talim: Huh? Oh, your like a ninja or something, right?
<With a confused look on his face, Mitsurugi lowered his blade>
Mitsurugi: Uh…no. I’m a samurai.
Talim: Oh, so, where ya goin?
Mitsurugi: Back home.
Talim: Can I come?
Mitsurugi: No.
Talim: Please?
Mitsurugi: No
Talim: Ok.
<Mitsurugi stands there, looking at the little girl in bewilderment for a second as she extends he lower lip and curls it down making whimpering noises. He turn and walks off.>
Talim: So what’s it like to be a ninja?
Mitsurugi: <still walking> I said you couldn’t come.
Talim: Oh, yeah. So what’s it like to be a ninja?
Mitsurugi: What’s your name?
Mitsurugi: Mitsurugi
Talim: Mine’s Talim. I’m a priestess of wind! Whoosh! Whoosh! That’s what wind
sounds like!
Mitsurugi: Go away.
Talim: Okay. So, have you ever stabbed anybody in the head?
Mitsurugi: Once, in the heat of battle.
Talim: Eww, that’s gross. Did snot come out?
Mitsurugi: No, snot did not come out.
Talim: Oh. How old are you? Like, 42?
Mitsurugi: No, I’m 29. How old are you? 12?
Talim: Three years ago. I’m hot. That’s why I show off my belly button. <begins to examine belly button> LOOK! LINT! EEWW!
<Mitsurugi cups his face in his hand and groans>
Mitsurugi: Will you go away?
Talim: Okay. So, how long are we going to walk. Don’t you ever stop to eat or anything like that?
Mitsurugi: No, I am trained to travel long distances with minimal food and water.
Talim: Cool. I wish a were a ninja too. Then I could, like, say ‘Hiy-Ya!’ and ‘Kicky Kong!’ or ‘Oooooooo-ya!’ or ‘Cheeech-Kong!’ or ‘kicky-licky’
Mitsurugi: You making words up.
Talim: No, I’m not! I have a mom.
Mitsurugi: Really, why don’t you go see her?
Talim: She’s dead silly.
Mitsurugi: <mumbling> I wish the same of you…
Then suddenly, a new figure appeared before them.
Mitsurugi: Not you! I’ve had enough of you! Huh, dejaview.
Talim: Ha Ha Ha! Haven’t you had enough?
Mitsurugi: Isn’t that what I just said?
