Alex bounded across the mountainous terrain with ease not stopping until he reached a small waterfall. Alex allowed Brittany to get off as he slumped against a tree and massaged his temple with his hand. It was then that Brittany realized just how pale Alex was.
"Alex, are you okay?" Brittany asked as she walked towards him and gave him a concerned look.
Alex looked up at her and nodded quickly. "Yeah I'll be fine. Let me just get some water and I'll be ready to go again."
Alex started to move towards the waterfall when Brittany grabbed his hand and turned him around to face her. "No way, not until I check you wounds."
"Brittany I'm fine. My healing factor will take care of anything those moksha's did to me. All they are, are small scratches nothing more. I'll be fine." Alex insisted.
"That still doesn't mean I don't need to heal them." Brittany argued.
"Look you can't use your healing magic. It will give us away."
"That's ridiculous! If I've got a choice between letting the mages know we're coming and you dying on me which do you think I'm going to choose?"
Alex sighed and shook his head. "Listen how about this. We're only a couple of more hours away from the mage's realm. It will be even less if you let me carry you. I'll admit I'm not feeling all that well but it's nothing serious. I was actually going to suggest that we spend the night tonight and head for the mage's realm first thing in the morning. I honestly doubt I'll be able to make it to the mage's realm tonight anyways."
"That's not a big deal. As long as you'll be okay that's all that matters." Brittany quickly responded.
Alex chuckled softly. "Looks like I'm the one that slowed us down after all."
"Don't say that. The only reason any of this even happened is because I fell down that stupid hole."
"True, but before anything else happens we need to get to a little higher ground." Alex said as he slowly got back onto his feet. "Unfortunately the sleeping bags and everything else got left in the cave. Luckily I've got some food in my cloak so we don't have to worry about that."
"I'm sure we'll be able to manage. Your very comfortable to sleep on so I'll be fine."
"Well in that case climb back on. I'll get us over the waterfall and find us some shelter for the night. During the night time is when the more feral demons hunt so there's a good chance you might see the more primitive side of the demon realm."
"Yeah I can hardly wait." Brittany replied sarcastically. Alex laughed as he kneeled before her.
"Go ahead and get back on. I'll get us over the waterfall and to some shelter hopefully." Alex said. Brittany got on was soon surprised to see Alex jumping on rocks jutting out from the waterfall. Alex easily scaled the waterfall by doing that and soon landed on a high ridge with a small cave inside of it. Alex and Brittany took refuge inside of the cave just as it began to downpour with rain.
"Well looks like we're stuck in here regardless." Alex said peering out at the rain.
"I don't mind. It'll feel good to rest a little." Brittany said patting the ground next to her. Alex took the hint and leaned against the wall allowing Brittany to rest against him. In a matter of moments she was asleep. As the night air began to drift in Alex covered her with the cloaks to keep her warm. The sounds of howls and feral screams filled the night. Alex watched glowing eyes pass by the entrance of the cave. Once a demon tried to enter and make a meal of the two that were in there. In a flash Alex was up and starring down the demon who dared to enter into his domain. Alex could sense that Brittany woke up at the commotion, but his attention was focused on the yellow eyed demon before it. The demon was similar to a wolf demon, but it was more primitive and didn't have the knowledge of speech. Alex's blue eyes shone brightly, matching the yellow eyed demon with fierce intensity. The demon lunged at Alex, fangs barred aiming for Alex's throat. Alex twisted around and grabbed the demon by the throat pinning him against the wall. The demon thrashed wildly trying to break Alex's grip on his throat, but nothing he did worked. Alex didn't want to kill the demon in front of Brittany because he could feel her eyes trained on him seeing what he was going to do. Alex instead lifted the demon up by his throat and in one powerful motion threw the demon out of the cave and over the edge of the cliff.
"If he comes back I won't be so generous." Alex said as he eased himself back down next to Brittany.
"Thanks for not killing him." Brittany said softly as she snuggled against Alex's shoulder. "I'm not sure why, but I sort of felt sorry for him."
"I know, I could sense what you were feeling. You felt sorry for him because he was regressed demon. That's the reason only reason I spared his life. So he better as hell be grateful for you."
"What exactly is a regressed demon?"
"Well there are two types of primitive demons. Those like the moksha's who live underground and are completely self-reliant have no need to know the human tounge. For that reason they are considered primitive. The second kind is a regressed demon. Demons that are wanted criminals or who have fled from society and live in the woods soon lose the ability to speak human tongue and end up reverting back to a more primitive and feral form. This is the more dangerous of the two because they fight as if they have nothing to lose. They fight solely on instinct."
"Well that one that you fought didn't seem that dangerous." Brittany commented.
"That's because he was afraid of the blue eyed demon." Alex said with a soft chuckle.
"What do you mean by that?"
"In all the demons you've come across how many have had blue eyes?"
Brittany thought for a moment recollecting all the demons she had encountered. "Well none I guess."
"Exactly, a blue eyed demon is something to be feared because they've never seen one before. You however know the reason why I'm the only one with blue eyes."
Brittany nodded softly and Alex could tell she was still extremely tired from all that had happened that day. "Get some rest. Tomorrow's when the real challenge begins."
"I know, goodnight Alex. I love you and thanks for taking care of me today. I would've been dead if you hadn't been there."
"I love you too Brittany and quit thanking me for stupid stuff. I wasn't about to let anything happen to you so don't think that you owe me anything. You could've saved yourself if you'd use your magic, but I'm glad you didn't. Now go to sleep."
It wasn't long before both the young lovers were fast asleep in each other's arms. Those demons brave enough to near the cave soon ran away quickly as if attacked by some unseen foe. Blue eyes could be seen from the mouth of the cave glowing in the darkness. Any demon that met the gaze of those eyes fled in fear of the blue eyed demon.
The next morning Alex and Brittany left as soon as it was light enough to see where they were going. Brittany rode on Alex's back as he made his way towards the mage's realm. The terrain became more and more mountainous until eventually Alex was running on solid stone up steep cliffs. Alex was literally forced to jump from rock to rock to make it up some parts of the cliff. Brittany noticed that Alex wasn't moving as fast or as nimble as he usually did. She tried to think why he might be slowed down when it suddenly hit her. Alex hadn't eaten anything in the past two days. When Alex skidded to a halt and let Brittany down so he could rest Brittany decided to question him.
"Alex please tell me you didn't give me the last of the food without you having any." Brittany said, but already knowing the answer.
"I told you. I don't get hungry as easily as you do. I can go a lot longer without food than you could. It was more important for you to have food than for me."
"Still you need food Alex. Even a demon needs to eat sometime. You can't possibly hope to fight on an empty stomach."
"Well personally I'm hoping that I won't have to fight at all if I can help it. I'll be fine. Listen we're almost there so put back on your cloak okay." Alex instructed. Brittany realized that there was no point in arguing with him and wrapped her cloak around her. Alex stopped and wrapped his arms around her as he continued. "Don't worry about me so much okay. I do things for a reason. Your more important to me than a few loaves of bread. I needed you physically well so incase the mages do something you'll be able to get us out of there."
"I understand what you're saying Alex but it doesn't change the fact that I'm not as fragile as you think I am. I worry about you Alex. I'm your mate, your lover that's what I'm going to do regardless of what you tell me. Just as you can't help but worry about me I can't help but worry about you."
"Fine you win." Alex said throwing his hands up in mock defeat. "If things go well with the mages we might get some food from them. If so I'll make sure to eat. Until then let's go ahead and just try to get there in one piece."
Alex kneeled and let Brittany climb onto his back again and in a matter of moments they were off again. Finally Alex slowed down his pace as he reached the peak of the cliff. He let Brittany off and led her towards the center of the cliff. They passed over a large stone archway and the moment they were through they saw before them an enormous temple. It was larger than the elven temple, but no where as big as Alex's castle. Still the large crystal and stone temple was a beautiful sight to behold. It had glass windows and crystals built into the sides of the temple giving it and illuminating effect. Alex held out his hand towards the temple and wrapped his other arm around Brittany's waist.
"I give you the realm of the mages." Alex said with a weary smile.
As if one cue ten mages clad in grey clothing and each one carrying a large staff walked out of the temple heading straight towards Alex and Brittany.
"So this must be the royal welcoming party." Brittany said dryly. "What do we do?"
"Simple, we follow them inside." Alex said as Brittany followed his lead and started walking towards the mages. Before they reached the mages Brittany looked at Alex and asked.
"Why are you so sure that they aren't going to try and attack us. Every time that we come in contact with the mages something bad happens, or don't you remember."
"Oh I remember. The question is wether or not they want to harm us. It's wether or not they are allowed to harm us."
"What do you mean?"
"If Alcadan really is pulling the strings then we should be okay. If not well...we'll find out." Alex said with a knowing look in his eyes. "Either way I doubt we're going to get any food in this place."
