Chapter Three - An Odd Pair

“So these are your cubs,” Lor said in awe.

She had turned Shira back into her normal form and had translated her cat-like language with her necklace.

“Yes, this one I named Kato, and this one is Jaeger,” Shira explained as she showed off her babies. “This one is Giro and this one is Lana.”

“Someday I’d like to have a family of my own,” Kite said with hope.

“Oh, pardon my thinking, but I thought that you two were mates,” Shira said. “That is before I found out you were a cat, and you a human.”

“You thought we were mates,” Lor said with a laugh.

How embarrassing, Lor thought to herself. Why does Kite always have to be so close. If he just stayed to himself then others wouldn’t think that way.

“No way, the mating season just ended and I’d hate to get in a relationship after,” Kite said as if Shira’s words didn’t faze him. Shira looked at him in a puzzled way. She had thought that cat’s mated year round. “I’m waiting til spring starts again.”

Lor almost passed out. What is he talking about! Lor looked at Kite as though he had just swallowed a fly. He wasn’t actually thinking –

“Then she’s not a human?” Shira asked in a confused tone.

“Nope, hundred percent cat,” Kite said before Lor could utter a word.

“Kite!”

“We’d better be going,” Kite said in a hurry as he began to exit the cave. “Come on Lor!”

Lor followed him out of the cave.

Hmm, that cat girl looks more like she’d be a human then a cat, Shira inquired to herself. Of course, what do I know. My senses aren’t what they used to be.

“Kite, what were you thinking telling her I was a cat?” Lor asked as they walked through the forest.

“Yeah, I know,” Kite said with a laugh in his voice. “But I just wanted to see the look on that cougars face when she saw what she was missing.”

“Kite, quit fooling around you stupid cat,” Lor said in an annoyed tone. “I’m not your ticket to get a mate.”

“As if there were any cats around here to mate with,” Kite said as he let out a sigh. “Perhaps I should just stay a human.”

“Heh, you wouldn’t last in my human world,” Lor said with disbelief. “You can’t just get a mate as easily as cats can. It takes more then...well...feelings.”

“Your wrong,” Kite began to explain. “Mating is done to have a litter, to keep up the population, and to have someone to –

“Okay! Okay!” Lor interrupted. “You don’t need to describe it all. Humans, for one thing, get embarrassed easily, unlike cats.”

“Embarrassed about what?” Kite asked.

“Well...a lot of things,” Lor replied. “Especially with public affection.”

“Are you embarrassed by public affection?” Kite asked curiously.

“Of course,” Lor answered immediately.
“But why?” Kite questioned.

“I just am,” Lor said. “All humans are if they haven’t had much practice at it.”

“Then maybe all you need is practice at it,” Kite said in a happy tone. “I’ll help you!”

Kite leaned towards Lor and kissed her on the cheek.

“Ah! What are you doing!?” Lor said as she blushed.

“That’s what cats do when they like each other,” Kite said as he smiled.

“I hope your not serious,” Lor said as she began to lose the color, from blushing, in her cheeks.

“Serious about what? What cats do, or about liking you?” Kite asked.

“About either,” Lor said aloud.

“Of course I’m serious, about what cats do anyways.”

Lor breathed a sigh of relief.

“But that doesn’t mean I wont eventually like you,” Kite whispered to himself.
