Chapter Four - The Dreaded Vet
The next day Lor got up bright and early to help out at the vet like she usually did every weekend.
“I can’t leave you here because everyone will be at the house while I’m gone. So you’ll have to come with me to the vet,” Lor said as she put on her make-up.
“The vet! But I’ve heard rumors about that place,” Kite exclaimed in fear. “They say it’s a torture chamber for pets.”
“Well, you won’t be going as a pet, will you,” Lor reminded him as she finished her make-up and looked through her closet.
“Hmm, I guess your right,” Kite pondered with a smile.
“Here, change your shirt,” Lor commanded as she tossed Kite one of her own orange t-shirts. “And today your taking a bath.”
“A bath!” Kite yelled halfway through the shirt. “Please! You can’t give me a bath, that’s something every cat hates!”
“Well if your going to live with me that’s the condition,” Lor responded as she put on her shoes. “Now get that shirt on and lets go.”
“Oh,” Kite groaned as he obeyed. “But I hate water.”
“Come on, Kite,” Lor said happily. “If you obey me I’ll let you teach me some more of those public affection things.”
“Really?” Kite tapped his head as he thought. “Alright, I’ll do it.”
Doesn’t really matter to me, Thought Lor. He’s cute anyways. What’s the harm in a few lessons.
“And who’s this?” Asked a vet assistant at the front. Kite and Lor had just entered the vet, and already Kite seemed fidgety about the place.
“Uh, this is....”
“I’m her boyfriend!” Kite said aloud. Apparently getting over his fear of the vet quickly.
Lor about fainted right on the spot, but before she did, she brought Kite to the side.
“Kite, what are you doing,” Lor demanded in a whisper. “Your not my boyfriend! Man, this is so embarrassing.”
“Simply because of that,” Kite replied. “Your still embarrassed of public affection and I can’t train you unless they think were together.”
“Yeah, but couldn’t you be a little more quiet about it?” Lor said in an annoyed tone. “Do you want the whole vet to know?!”
“Uh, sure. Whatever it takes,” Kite exclaimed.
That day, as Lor shredded paper for cat litter in the cat dorms, Kite got a lecture from one of the other volunteers on how to clean a cage. Lor couldn’t help but laugh as Kite flinched each time he went past the dog cages. He looked so cute doing work, she almost forgot he was originally a cat.
“Kite, I need you to take this food bowl to the dog dorm,” Lor said as she handed Kite the bowl of dog chow.
“Me? How about you?” Kite urged, but Lor was already pushing him towards the door. “Alright fine!” Kite said reluctantly, before entering the dog room. “But I better get to embarrass you a lot when I get out of there.”
“Just go, Kite,” Lor said aloud as she tried to hide her snickering.
Kite entered the dog dorm but didn’t stay in long, before a very large, loud dog began to bark ferociously at Kite.
“Ahh!” Kite screamed as he raced out of the dog dorm. His task complete. “I did what you asked. Now please, lets just go to the cat dorm again.”
They both headed back to the cat dorm to finish more work, and along the way Lor couldn’t help but laugh at the previous sight of Kite jumping ten feet in the air as he exited the dog dorm.
“This vet place is really creepy,” Kite said observantly. “They got these needles, and medicine, and even as a human I can smell the distinct scent of blood.”
“Well, I guess you get used to it once you’ve been here for a while,” Lor replied as she placed food in a cats bowl. “Sometimes it get’s lonely, but other times I am able to talk to the cats here.”
“Do you mean turn them into a human like you did me?” Kite inquired.
“No, I mean I can translate their language and talk to them like I did with the cougar,” Lor replied. “Sometimes, though, If a cat can be let out for play time I may transform them for a while.”
“Hey, why don’t we transform one now,” Kite suggested. “How about her?”
“Her?” Lor looked at the fluffy blonde cat before her, but then frowned as she thought of what Kite might be thinking. “No! I can’t have you prancing around her like a love sick poodle.”
“Hey, I despise poodles!” Kite said aloud. “You can’t compare me to them!”
“Please Kite, it’s just an expression.” Lor said. Kite looked at her with confusion on his face. “Oh never mind. It’s best we stick with male cats.”
“Oh, so now your trying to find a mate!?” Kite inquired with jealousy.
“No, Kite! I’m just making sure you don’t go mating yourself,” Lor answered as she moved to different cages. “No, this one wont due. Nope, can’t be out of the cage. Hmm, this one scratches to much.”
“Are you done picking a cat yet?” Kite asked impatiently.
“Oh, stop being a cat and be patient.” Lor commanded.
“But I am a cat,” Kite said to himself in an annoyed voice.
“How about this one?” Lor asked as she pointed to a sooty white cat with black tipped paws. “Lynx.”
“Hmm? But that one almost tried to slice my finger off!” Kite exclaimed as he recalled the incident.
“Oh, he’ll be fine,” Lor said as she opened the cage and scratched behind the cat’s ears. “He seems to like me.” Lor grabbed a hold of the cat and place him on the floor. Then she rubbed his chin once and at once Lynx was a human.
“Hello, Lynx,” Lor greeted. “I’m Lor. And this is Kite.”
“Yeah, nice to meet you,” Kite said glumly.
“The pleasures mine,” Replied Lynx as he bowed. “You wouldn’t happen to have some water would you? It seems I ran out in my cage.” He asked them both, but had implied it to Kite.
“Oh course! Kite, get a glass of water for Lynx,” Lor commanded. And Kite was gone in a flash.
“I haven’t been a bother have I?” Lynx asked with concern in her voice.
“Not at all,” Lor replied with a smile. “You’re a very nice cat, Lynx.”
“Hmm,” Lynx pondered for a minute and then made a small, yet evil grin. “Tell me my dear....” Lynx suddenly took a hold of Lor and pushed her to the ground where she lay helplessly pinned by Lynx’s strength. “...am I so nice a cat now?”
“Let me go!” Lor yelled in fear as she tried struggling from Lynx’s tight grip.
“You were lucky enough to have me bound to a cage when I was a cat, but now that I am free, and a human, nothing will stop me.” Lynx said as he came closer to Lor’s face. Lor gulped in fear as she watched his misty blue eyes come dangerously close to hers. “You should also consider giving me that necklace as well.” Lynx said as he placed his hand on her bare neck, slowly moving it towards her feline necklace.
Suddenly a burst of wind came in as Kite opened the door of the cat dorm. He thought he had heard rough play in the cat’s dorm, but he had no idea Lynx was taking advantage of Lor. Was he? Kite had no time to think as he seized the moment and went for Lynx. But before he could even touch Lynx, the transformed human-cat had leaped though a high open window and headed outside into the wild.
“No, he’s getting away!” Lor yelled as she headed for the window herself. “We have to get him or the vet will know I lost him!”
“What happened?” Kite asked Lor as he held her back from going after Lynx. “What did Lynx do to you?”
“That doesn’t matter right now, Kite!” Lor yelled as she broke free from Kite’s grip. “I managed to keep a hold of the necklace, but he can’t be trusted out there. I need you to go get him and bring him back, Kite!”
“Alright! I’ll be back soon!” Kite said as he obeyed Lor’s command and leaped out the window to find Lynx.
“Be careful, Kite!” Lor yelled to him.
“Don’t worry! I will!” Kite yelled back before running off into the distance where all that could be seen was roads and woods.
“I hope so, Kite.” Lor said softly as she watched him running in the distance.
