In the Timeless land of Hyrule a plague has been set. The land is dry and the water gone. Nothing grows and every thing is dead or dying. Creatures from the mountains, forests, lakes, and valleys flock to the field in search of food. Yet there they die. The sages have tried everything in their power to sustain the now barren country sided, But have failed each returned to their people to keep the strength. Sari weeps.
The King and Queen sit uneasy on their thrones. Their children near them. There was nothing that could be done by them, the ocarina, the sages, or even the shiekas of healing. People are weak every single piece of food that could be found has slowly been distributed among the people, same with the wine and water. Link will neither eat nor drink. His family worries. Their only hope was to send a message to their friends In Alvaliar; to the Keeper of the Key. And so they did.
Kaepora Gaebora flew high over the lands his wings stretching as the great forest he towered above. He was the wise owl of Hyrule whom always seemed to have some sort of information but now he was on a bigger task. His bright yellow eyes strained to stay open and his body yearned for the food he wished for. Flying three days straight not stopping for anything.
Sari had called to him from the forest temple and by her wishes he went to the castle only to be sent on a journey to the western lands. Brown feathers glided over the wing one or two being swept away every so often but he didn't care. He was told only to give the letter to the rulers of Alvalair.
Lights shown through the darkness as he came closer to the uncharted land, and so he began to glide downward. Again that yearning presented itself and this time he was unable to overcome it. Kaepora began to loose altitude and his vision blurred as his eyes shut. He could no longer go on and slowly the wingspan decreased until the old bird fell.
A shadowed figure darted around the castle grounds. She had once again sneaked out and now had to elude the ever-watchful guards as she began the journey back inside. Her bright blond hair dangled infront of her face as her emerald eyes darted `round every corner. She wore a long sleeved, gray shirt that ended right below her breasts, and dark green pants tucked into her boots. On the boots a golden band wrapped around her calves, which was the only great symbol that she was a noble. Although, that wasn't any great distinction. Around her waist sat a leather belt christened with a lemon shaped brass buckle. A satchel was added to the left side and on the right a turquoise flute was held captive. A long dark brown cloak hid her in the shadows.
She crept through the gardens and hid behind the cold stone of the fountain ducking down low so as not to be spotted by any of the night patrollers. Cool water splashed over the side and the wind blew sending a chill down her spine. She crept to her feet and slowly began away from the fountain. Edging her way through the shadows. Almost, she was almost home free when "Splash!" At the sound of the noise guards swarmed over her and the fountain in an instant.
"Adamina what are you doing here at this hour?" the voice was familiar and one she had truly not wished to encounter that night.
"Liam back off! What I do is my business!" she cried in his face.
"You forget who you are to much my dear sister! You're not a bandit combing the streets for food! You're the princes of Alvalair and should start acting as such!" Liam yelled in her face and grabbed hold of her tender wrist. She winced a bit at the metal and leather surrounding her hand. Did he ever take off that accursed armor? Each piece of material nipped at her arm but like this there was no getting away from him.
Liam was well suited to be a prince. Strong, a little bit dashing, but his attitude sucked. He was always so sure of himself. And that's one of the things that irritated her so. Unfortunately, like it or not she was stuck with no apparent way to escape this a cursed family.
"Sir we've got something here!" Liam's attention rose with a smile and Adamina looked up at him in disgust. He loved being called that having people do his bidding on command. She dreaded the day he would be crowned King. He strode defiantly over to "his" men dragging his little sister over to the soggy brown heap that now lay on the thick grass. With his free hand he turned the creature on its back only to come face to face with a giant owl. He stood up.
"Dispose of it." The solders began to pick the beast up when Adamina caught sight of a golden glimmer.
"Wait Liam look." She caught his attention and pointed to the symbol that had been hiding under his feathers. "He's from Hyrule." The tale of Hyrule had spread ore' the land after everything had been taken care of. About the exiling, the death, and of course the noble hylian heroes whom help save Alvalair from the its evil ruler. Anyone from Hyrule was a welcomed guest and was treated with as much respect as the nobles of Alvalair.
"But Adamina it's dead. The word "it" rang in Adamina's ears. How could he have that little respect for such a majestic creature that was obviously a male.
"I… am… not dead…" Kaepora's voice was sharp and heavy straining. Adamina glared at Liam and shook her hand free as the bewildered prince looked at the talking bird.
"Get him in side," she commanded with a harsher tone than that of her own brother. The guards jumped at this command and rushed the large owl inside, the siblings right behind them.
Inside they took the bird to a room where he could rest. It was sort of odd they all knew it but anyone from Hyrule marked with the sacred crest was defiantly welcome in the castle. Adamina stayed with the wounded creature while Liam left with the guards to find their parents. Adamina stared, Kaepora feeling watched opened his great eyes. Yellow met green as they gazed a little at each.
"It's rude to stare you know?" Kaepora managed to choke out in his usual tone. Adamina averted her gaze.
"I'm sorry its… just I never known a creature that could actually speak to Me." she looked up at him again her cheeks growing red. He tried to sit strait but he was unable to.
"Come here please little one." Adamina stood and walked over to him. Do me a favor and take this blasted thing off my leg." Kaepora motioned to his left leg that had weighed him down through out his journey. She looked only feathers could be seen.
"I can't see it. The way you lay makes it close to impossible." She replied. He tried to move another way but she stopped him. "Wait I can help you." With a flick of her wrist she brandished her flute.
"The whole thing had been carved out of turquoise making it extremely valuable. Eight holes covered the surface one on the back and seven, topside. It was her most prized possession and she never let it out of her sight.
She put the reed to her lips and blew gently, gliding her fingers over the holes as if stoking it. The music it produced was enchanting and Kaepora felt his soul lifting and at the same time realizing something very familiar about the tune. She played and played for a few minutes' tops, but time had seemed to stop and when the last note was heard hours had flown by and yet nothing changed.
Kaepora jumped to his feet at the last note rejoicing on the tune not even realizing that is fatigue had subsided. Adamina smiled at her new found feathered friend flapping his wings about and hooting happily.
"My word I know… How did you learn that… I've only heard Link..." He mumbled a bit to himself and turned away from the frail girl. She smiled.
"How'd I learn it?" she laughed but then became solemn. "You must promise not to tell anyone." Her voice was cold and it chilled Kaepora. He turned to her but did not answer. If know one was to know then he had better not learn the secret either.
A swift of cold wind blew on Adamina as the door opened. Her mother stepped in, her Father not far behind. She wrapped the heavy cloak around her body, and stared at her parents her gaze harsh as their weapons jangled in the sheathes that held them. Kaepora stared at the rulers in disbelief. He had seen them before as teenagers out on their first adventure in Hyrule but they had changed much more than expected in the last seventeen years.
The woman had long pearl hair that swung down to her waist. She was adored in a long silver and blue dress flowing down to the floor in great ruffles covering what seemed like a foot from where she actually stood. A brown belt hugged her waist and sheathed daggers rested on her hips. A silver tiara signaled her nobility as the sapphire tear shined in the light. She was the ruler of Alvaliar, Queen Hoshiko, and the alleged Keeper of the Key.
Beside her stood a man with sun hair and storm cloud eyes. His hair once propped up by a green bandana now flew right above his eyes covering an emerald studded circlet. He was adorned in a brown tunic and baggy white shirt the tunic reaching mid-hip length. Baggy white nickers were stuffed into his knee high leather boots. As with his wife a large belt was seated around his waist a sheathed broad sword at his side complete with jeweled handle. He was the King of Alvaliar, King Aleron. One of the three best swords men in the land.
Each burst through the door half expecting one of their beloved Hylian friends half dead. Their breaths were heavy. Adamina could tell they had run the whole way. Hoshiko and Aleron caught their breath and addressed their daughter first.
"Adamina go to your room we will talk more about your behavior later." Hoshiko's green eyes had shown no anger as her voice did and as Adamina left the room she giggled to herself.
"Hmmm now what brings you to Alvaliar my fine…owl." The last word sounded a bit odd but Aleron kept his face strait being as polite as possible.
Kaepora ruffled his feathers fearing about the people whom could've died on his way here. "I bring a message of great urgency to you. Hyrule is plagued and you're our last hope to saving it. Nothing grows only dies. I fear for the people who have very little to eat and especially for Link who eats nothing at all. The stubborn boy…" Kaepora narrowed his eyes at that thought but continued his blunt speech. "This letter is from Zelda it should explain more." Kaepora bent down and detached a note from his ankle handing it to Hoshiko.
She unrolled it and read. The paper was stained with tears and as Hoshiko read tears filled up in her own eyes. Aleron read over her shoulder hugging his love with reassurance. "Aleron come we've much to do before we leave tomorrow…for Hyrule." Her words were defiant and Aleron nodded.
"We must attend to some outside priorities, but you are welcomed to stay here my friend. Rest, for tomorrow we head to Hyrule." Aleron's voice echoed out into the hall and a blonde eavesdropper scrambled into hiding. She watched her parents disappear down the hall, she followed.
