Part three: How to trick the impossible

"could you hold this for a moment please Alex," The girl said softly as she handed Alex her shovel. Alex took it and patted the girl gently on her back. She was going threw so much pain right now. Alex was starting to wonder if she was on the verge of killing herself.

"Nikki are you sure your okay?" Alex said, then girl turned towards her and nodded. The girl, Nikki, was not okay. She was far from okay. Her hands had blisters and blood all over them. Her back was in the most pain it have ever been in. Her feet were threatening to fall off and her eyes burned the rays of the setting sun. Then her skin felt like it was on fire, she had gotten badly burned on the parts of her skin that were not covered. She was thirst and hungry, she was very far from okay.

Alex had not been to far from the truth when she though Nikki might kill herself. Nikki had though about it countless times. The many ways she could end her worthless life. She had come so close of killing herself a few times, Alex had stopped her once and Joe had three times. She did not know why Joe cared if she cut her wrist or her neck. But then again he needed someone to work on this damn farm.

The first time Nikki tried to take her life was when she found out that The Mamores were not her birth parents, she cried her self sick. At least when she though the Mamores were her parents, she though there had been people who cared for her, but when she found out she was dropped off there, she knew her birth parents hated her. Why did everyone hate her?

"You don't look okay," Alex said as she pushed Nikkis bangs out of her face so she could check on Nikkis Band-Aids. Nikki shook Alex away and then took her shovel back. Nikki was scared that if Joe saw her talking to Alex, that he would start hitting Alex as well. Nikki did not want Alex to go threw all the hell she had to go threw.

"I'm fine all right!" Nikki snapped her worn out fingers at Alex then looked at the plants. She had done so much work today. She worked for free. Got hit every time Joe felt the need. Her blood left her body more often then it should. Nikki always tried to find out why she was born, why she was raised like this. Why no one loved her. Alex cared for her, but there was no way Alex could love Nikki, if Alex did, Alex would be out here working with her.

"ALEX! RAT! Time to get the hell in the house, it's dinner!" Joe yelled, Nikki turned around and started to head for the house. she made sure that Alex stood in front of her the whole time. The last time Nikki got to the house before Alex did, she could not walk for three days. And on the fourth day she was forced back out to work even though she could hardly stand.

Alex walked into the house and Joe bent over and kissed his youngest daughters forehead. Then a fear shot threw Nikki's body, what was he going to do to her? This meant he was in a good mood, which meant it was the bets time to hit her. Nikki Closed her eyes as she came threw the door but when nothing happened she forced her eyes opened. And then, Joe was no in her face, breathing down her neck. He, did nothing to her.

Now Nikki was more scared then she ever was before. That had been a first. Nikki put her shovel down next to the door and took her seat at the table. Joe was sitting right across from Nikki and he had a smile on his face. Nikki was sure he was not smiling about her. Next to Nikki was Alex, then the Middle daughter Clover and on the other side of Nikki sat Joes's oldest daughter. Her name was Jessie.

Alex cared for Nikki and wished nothing bad to happen to her. Clover really did not care what happened to Nikki if it was bad or good, it really did not mean much to her. But Jessie, Jessie hated Nikki more then Joe did. Nikki never understood why Jessie hated her but she did, and having to sit next to her at dinner was hell.

Once in a while Jessie would give Nikki a good kick under the table or knock over her glass of water. Or what ever Jessie did not like to eat, it some how managed to get in Nikkis hair. How many times Nikki wanted to fight back, to really take a lock of Jessies hair and rip it right out of her head. Or to take the mashed patatos and put it all over her hair. The two were always at war, and Jessie made an attempt, every time to see Nikki get beat, to see Nikki bleed. It made her happy to see Nikki scream.

The only reason why Nikki ate dinner with the rest of the family was, if she did not eat well she could not work, and not working would make this family go poor. So the only think she got good was the food. Though the though of beating Nikki up was okay but not feeding her was not okay. Nikki really did not under stand this family, nor did she want to.

"That boys a great worker," Joe said finally after ten minutes into dinner. Nikki looked up, was that why he was so happy, he got another great worker. She should have figured, but at least she did not get smacked when she walked in to the house this evening.

"Oh yes Tenameru, I'm so happy we found him," Mesa, Joes's wife said as she wiped her mouth by gently dabbing it. She acted as if she was some millionaire. Nikki rolled her eyes, it was always about them. Of course they missed the fact that these new guy, Tenameru had found them. Nikki went to sleep last night wondering how the hell he found his way here. Of all the places he could have found a job he came here. Nikki wanted to ask him, but there was a feeling that came over her when he was around. Though she had only talked to him once and watched him work almost all night...it was still there and it was strong.

"That Blue hair hottie?" Jessie asked and Nikki put her napkin over her mouth to keep everyone from seeing the look that just appeared on her face. Like Jessie had a chance wish someone as sweet as he was. But how would Nikki know? For all she knew Tenameru could have kissed Jessies hand last night as well. She did not know, she was hiding in a shadow.

"Great, she has another crush," Clover said as she pushed her dinner plate away from her. It was a known fact to the family that every male thing that walked on two legs she though was hot. All but her father of course. Nikki rubbed her neck then slowly pushed her plate away as well.

"Go to your room and stay there," Mesa said as she pointed out the door. Nikki was more then happy. She did not want to hear about Jessies love life, if she ever had a real one maybe Nikki might stay to hear it threw. Nikki got up and pushed her chair in. She walked out of the room as quickly as she could, Joe might change his mine and get up and smack her.

Joe must have been really pleased with the way Tenameru had done his work last night, Joe had not touched Nikki once that day, the only time he talked or looked at her was he called her and Alex in for dinner. Maybe it was not going to be so bad with this Tenameru guy hanging around.

Just as Tenameru came to her mind the front door started to opened. Nikki stopped walking and looked at the front door. Tenameru walked in and shut the door as he entered the house. Once he looked up, his eyes locked on Nikki. the two of them just stood there looking at one anther, it was like they were lost in their own world until a small happy scream came from the dinning room. Nikki groaned, it was none other then Jessie.

"OH Tenameru, my father has told em a lot about you," Jessie said as she came running into the living room. She then stopped when she spotted Nikki. Her smile quickly turned into a frown. "You weren't talking to him were you? If you said anything about me you brat-"

"She did not say anything," Tenameru said as he walked over to Jessie and Nikki. Nikki gave Tenameru a really small smile but it was still there. Jessie then pushed Nikki out of the way and looked back at Tenameru. Tenameru had not interest in Jessie as she started rambling on about something or another. It might have made some sence if he had been taking in anything she was saying. His eyes we still locked on Nikki. But As Nikki heard Joe coming out of the dinning room, Nikki ran from the living room and towards her bedroom.

"Good evening Tenameru, did I tell you what a great job you did on those flowers!" Joe said as he shook Tenamerus hand again. He then looked up at Joe and smiled. Then Jessie changed topics and started talking about flowers.

"Thank you sir," Tenameru said and Joe but his arm around his oldest daughter finally shutting her up. Tenameru just wanted to go out side and start working, maybe get a sighting of that girl again. Still he did not know what her name was. But the strangest thing was, he did not have his normal dreams about her when he returned to the Inn, he did see her in his dream but she was not being beat. She had a smile on her face and she looked even more lovely. Did he really do such nice job that Joe forgot he had to smack the girl around?

"So what do you think of my oldest angel Tenameru?" Joe asked and Tenameru lifted his right eye brow up slightly. Was he haighered to work on flowers or get to know his daughter better. If Tenameru really told him what his first impression of his oldest daughter was, he'd be the one with the bloody scars all over his body.

"She's great!" Tenameru said trying to keep a happy tone. He really did not like lying, but in a case with dealing with a man like Joe, a little lie every now and then would not hurt any one. Joe then patted, well more like slapped, Tenameru on his back with even a bigger smile on his face. He pushed Jessies towards the stairs and motioned for her that it was item for bed.

Joe then wen back in the dinning room and told his other daughters it was time for bed as well. Mesa came out of the dinning room with her daughters, then shortly after them Joe came back out. As he walked past Tenameru he winked this time then walked up the stairs. What mess had he just dug himself in to?

Tenameru really hoped they did not expect anything else from him besides working on his farm at night. Tenameru then looked in the direction that the girl had ran in, it was not up stairs, it was around the corner from where he was standing. He wanted to go find her, but surprising her might make her yell or scream on accident and he did not want her to get in trouble. He just hoped that she would be at her window again tonight.

With that in mind he went out in the back to start some work. He would not be here now if it was not for that girl, the feeling he got when he though about her or had dreams about her. He could not fight the feeling. With a heavy sigh he started working on the flowers. The sooner he got this done the sooner he could try and make contact with the girl and finally find out her name.

The night went on and every so often Tenameru would look behind him at the house. At the window where he saw the girl last night. But she was not there. He was starting to give up any hope of speaking to her that night but then the feeling came to him a little after midnight. He turned around just in time to see the girl slowly open her shutters to her window.

Karzon dropped his tools and started to head over to the girl. There was no way he was going to miss her tonight. Nikki looked out her window as she spotted Tenameru coming her way. She wanted to talk to him but did not know if it was such a good idea, she had gotten a little bit of sleep but she could not stop thinking about him. About the way his eyes stared at her when he came in the house this night. And how could she shut him out when he was coming to her.

"Hello..." Nikki said as Tenameru reached her window.

"I though for sure you were going to shut the shutters on me again tonight," Tenameru said and Nikki shrugged her shoulders. She then shook her head no, then with out thinking about what she was doing, Nikki reached out and pushed Tenamerus bangs out of his face.

When she realized what she had done, she shot backwards away from the window, her heart racing in her chest. If Jessie had seen that she would have sent Joe after her faster then she could have blinked. Tenameru on the other hand did not really understand why she was so scared of him, because he did not know how far Jessies crushes went. And what happend to the last person who turned Jessie down.

"Please don't go I don't even know your name," Tenameru said as he leaned on her window seal. Nikki sighed then took in a really deep breath, if she had any where else to do then she would have a long time ago. She looked around her room. There was no way Jessies was going to come bug her, not at night any ways. Nikki then walked back over to the window.

"Sorry I touched your hair...my names Nikki, your Tenameru right?" Nikki asked as she leaned on the window as well and looked into Tenamerus eyes. She could get lost in his eyes. No matter how much she like him being around, she was still scared. For one she was scared of her family and for two she hardly knew him, how could she feel this way towards someone she knew nothing about?

"Yeah I'm Tenameru, Nice to meet you Nikki. And, Um, you don't have to worry about touching my hair, not many people have touched my hair. But it's really okay I'm not going to do anything to you if you do," Tenameru said "Can I ask you something?"

"Sure I guess."

"Why do they hurt you? How can anyone raise a hand to you," Tenameru wanted to reach out and touch her face, but he did not want her to freak out like she did when she touched his hair. Nikki though about that question, thats what she wanted to know but she always came up with the same answer.

"Well, I'm not their kid, not even related to them. I guess thats why Joe hits me...and makes me bleed," Nikki rolled up her sleeve of her dress, there in her arm was the number four carved into her skin. Tenameru's expression turned from loving to horrified, they were carving things into this poor girls skin. He gasp was airy and it was like someone had slammed their fist into his stomach. He had a dream about that, now he knew for a fact this was the girl who filled his dreams.

"You put your shovel on the wrong side of the door, Joe got mad and grabbed the knife that was sitting on the table and carved this into your arm. To remind you are the fourth and worst daughter in the house...." Tenameru said as he ran his fingers over the scar. Nikki was not the one with the change of expressions. But she looked so confused.

"How did you know that?" She asked and Tenameru looked up at her. If she was not sending message out to him asking him for help, then why did he have those dreams of her. Why was he saw drawn to Nikki. Tenameru then cupped her hand into his. This was all really weird, but at the same time it felt great to be around her.

"It does not matter how I know, were together now," Tenameru said and that threw Nikki for another loop. That was an odd comment. But she was swept away again when Tenameru kissed her finger tips. This wonderful feeling reached out and touched every single part of her body, and for the first time in almost half her life Nikki smiled.

"It was real nice talking to you but I really need to get so sleep, unlike you I have to work in a few hours, and I need all my strength to make it threw the day," Nikki said as she gently took her hand back from Tenameru. She knew she was making a stupid choice telling him she needed sleep. But she still had that fear that Jessie was going to walk in and send Jo after her.

"Want me to tuck you in?" Tenameru asked and Nikki gave him the oddest look.

"What to me?" Nikki asked again, she knew what he said but she did not know what that meant. Those words all together in one sentence aiming at her was something she never heard before. Though Tenameru only meant it as a joke was kind of stunned that she did not know what he meant by that. They both looked at each other for another moment.

"No one...has ever tucked you in bed before?" He asked, he was wrong when he told Taff everyone had been tucked in. Nikki shook her head no, she blew out her candle and sat down on her bed. No one had ever kissed, sang or read her a bed time story. She got over being scared of the dark a while ago and learned there was not such thing as the tooth fairy on her own as well.

"No, but if they did why would you want to tuck me in?" Nikki asked, still a bit lost on the topic. Did these people do anything with this poor girl? Tenameru then jumped up on the window seal and hoped into Nikki's room. She was about to say something to stop him but he put his finger up to his lip to keep her hushed. If Nikki did not even know what tucking in to bed was, what other things did she not know?

Tenameru walked over to Nikki's Bed side and pushed her down gently so that she was now laying down. Tenameru never though he's have to act like a father at his age. but He was really starting to fell Nikki's pain, and the pain of not knowing.

"My mom used to tuck me in all the time when I was younger, or when I was scared, she would find the right words to say to comfort me," Tenameru said as he took Nikki's blanket and threw it over her. Nikki smiled slightly still not getting the whole point of tucking someone on into bed.

"I wish I knew who my mother was..." Nikki said and Tenameru leaned on her bed. Was this how his mother felt when she used to tuck him in. Did is mother look at him and just want to cuddle up next to him after tucking him in to bed. Because thats how he felt, it was another feeling he was having trouble with fighting.

"I know you'll find out one day, bur for now, I hope you sleep well. It was nice chatting with you tonight Nikki," Tenameru said with a smile on his face. He just felt complete as Nikki looked up at him. It was a feeling that no word could describe.

"I wish I could work at night with you..." Nikki said softly as she closed her eyes. She was tried and sleep was coming quickly to her. It was a comment she had not thought about saying. But even if she though about it she would have said it. Because she meant it.

"I guess I'm wishing the same thing..." Tenameru said as he tucked Nikki in to bed, he felt her starting to slip away into her dream world. It was a wonderful feeling. A true feeling, something not many people felt after knowing someone for not even two days.

"It's so crazy it just might work..." Nikki said slowly and finally left Tenameru for the dream world. Tenameru stood back up. He had tool Taff that if he could save a life he would. He wanted to Save Nikki, and he was not going to stop until she was safe. But there was things she needed to know, needed to learn before she ever left this house. Something that should have been taught to her that never were.

He then blew out the last one of her candles and walked back over to her open window. He then jumped back outside into the fresh cold night time air. He knew Nikki needed to learn some things, but he felt like he needed to learn some as well. As he took one last look at Nikki he took hold of her shutters and closed them.

Tenameru then walked back over there where he had been working before he went to have his chat. The only way he could see Nikki was to work in a place like this. But it would have to do for now, there was no other way. Not yet any ways. But there would soon be a way.

He finished up the last bit of work and started to head off towards the inn for some rest. He prayed one last time before leaving the yeard, that Nikki would be okay when he returned that night. And then off to the Inn he went, maybe to have a small chat with Sara.

"Nikki, Yahoo Nikki time to get up!" Alex said as she walked over to Nikki who was still sound asleep in her bed. If Alex was not mistaken it did appear...she was tucked into bed last night. Alex looked around the room, under Nikkis bed and in her closet for any signs of human life lurking around the room. But when she found nothing she though she should get back to waking Nikki up before her father came in here. screaming that it was breakfast time.

Alex then sat down on Nikki's bed and started patting her face. Nikki stirred a little, then finally after a few seconds of patting her eyes started opening. Alex then smiled so big when she saw that Nikki was smiling as well! This had to be a day to remember.

"I'm so happy your happy Nikki!" Alex said as Nikki sat up and yawned. Nikki still had a smile on her face. "Good dream?"

"The best..." Nikki said as she rubbed her back. She put her hand over her heart before she jumped out of bed. She looked threw her pile of clothes for an out fit to wear. Alex had never seen Nikki like this before. Yesterday morning she was gloomy and grim. But now it was as if Nikki had been touched by an angel.

"Do you want to share? I do love good dreams," Alex said as Nikki Step in her closet. she shut the closet door and in the dark she started to change in one of her best outfits she owned. Alex waited on the other side of the closet door. She really wanted to know what kind of dream could change Nikki so much. It must have been a super dream not just a good one.

Nikki changed quickly then pushed opened the closet door. She was in her best purple shirt and her lovely matching purple skirt. She hardly wore this outfit in fear she might mess it up when she was out side working. But today was a day like not other. She had ever reason to be happy, and she was, she was going to stay happy all day no matter how many times Joe hit her, even if he cut off her arm. There was nothing he could do to spoil her mood.

But then she stopped as Alex stood up. Maybe there was one thing he could do to ruin her mood maybe two. But one of them would never happen so she only had one to worry about. What if he found out she was about to tick him and not let her work at night? She shook her head, Joe never would know she was about to trick him.

But if he did ever find out she tricked him, Nikki closed her eyes as she became fearful once again. If he found out, Nikki would never wake up in the mornings, he would kill her and she knew that for a fact. But she had to do this, even if death could happen to her.

"Well Tell me about it already! Your leaving me on a cliff!" Alex said as she and Nikki started to walk out of Nikki's room. Alex still was happy and Nikki was trying to keep her smile. She looked over at Alex, she was going to have to make up a dream, she could not remember her dream but she did remember Tenameru tucking her in to bed last night. And how he said it was okay for her to touch his hair.

"Well, see I was out on the farm and I did everythign right. So Joe let me out to the markets one day and I met this really sweet guy. He, well he was wonderful and he was so kind to me. He was worried and said, `don't worry Nikki, one day, one day we will be married...' and then he took me in his arms, and you woke me up," Nikki smiled she wished she had a dream like that. But Alex bought into it and then Alex started telling Nikki about her dream. It was a lovely dream about butterflies and flowers.

The two of them walked in the dinning room and Nikki hid her smile so that Joe could not sence any signs of happy in her. Nikki took her normal seat right as Jessie walked in the dinning room. Nikki wanted to brag to her, but she kept the cravings down in her stomach, one day she would be able to laugh in her face.

"Almost time for work Nikki!" Jessie said in her meanest ugliest tone she could summon up. This was what Nikki was hopping for. This was going to go better then she though. What a big fool Jessie was, and poor her that Tenameru did not find her any what interesting, poor her, yeah right. This was time for Nikki to start acting.

"Great! I can't wait!" Nikki said, then she smiled, she was to fool to the make them believe she was so happy to go work out of that hot farm all day. Well so far so good, The look on Jessies face was so perfect. She had fallen right where Nikki wanted her. And now she needed to trick Joe.

"You can't wait?" Jessie repeated like she had not heard right. Well she though she had not heard right. But Nikki nodded her head and her smile just got bigger. She wanted to paint the image of Jessies face just to keep it hanging on her wall forever. It was priceless this face was.

"Oh yeah! I just realized how lucky I was, That I get to work in the day, with the sun shining down on me. And I don't have to work at night, god can you imagine working at night? When all the bugs come out, some times a Skull Kid wonders into the farm. I just have to say, thank you for not making me work at night," Nikki said and she finished with a fake sigh of relief. But her skills had worked, She looked over at Joe and his fork was stuck in mid air between his plate and his mouth. His mouth on the other hand was opened and in shock. So was Mesa. Clover looked normal like she did not care and Alex was a little shocked as well.

"You like working in the hot sun?" Mesa asked and Nikki shook her head yes then picked up her fork and started eating. She was the only one to eat besides Clover. Joe then finally cleared his voice like he was about to bring the family really bad news. Nikki tried to hide her smile, he had to say it. Her acting was way to good for him not to have fallen for it.

"Well Nikki Something has come up," Joe said and now he was the one to smile. He always did this when he was going to say something that was bad and it would only effect Nikki. Nikki then changed her face expression to her worriest look.

"What is it?" Nikki asked, now she held her fork in mid air to try and make it as realistic as she could. Joe then stood up and said as clear and as ruthless as he possible could.

"We got a new worker for the day time. You will now work night with Tenameru. But if he complains about you girl, and or if you get in his way why he's working, there will be hell to pay you understand me. I hope your happy, now you better Finnish up your breakfast and get some sleep, because when Tenameru comes your going out to work," Joe said like he has just done the worst thing to Nikki. Nikki pretended to gasp like it was horrible. Like she had not planned it this way. What a simple minded dope she lived with.

"You don't have another worker! You lie! You just want me to work at night because I'm scared of the dark! Well fine! you....you!" Nikki yelled like she would sometimes after he ripped her off like this. But this made Joe put on his mad face again. He would always do that when Nikki back talked his command.

"You Finnish your food and go to your room!" Joe yelled, how much Nikki needed to get out of this room and just start laughing. Nikki took another bite of her beckfast then pushed the plate away from her.

"You might have won this time, but it's not over Joe," Nikki said as she stood up and stormed out of the dinning room. She then ran to her bedroom door and smile and clapped her hands over her heart. Now that was not so heard. They completely fell for it. How she ever left them trap her before was a mysterie but now she had the upper hand.

"You better stay away from him," Jessies curl voice came from behind her. Had she followed her? What was Jessies problem? Nikki turned around and frowned at Jessie. This girl was really getting on her last nerves.

"Who?" Nikki asked and Jessie slammed her hand on the wall next to Nikki's head. Nikki looked at Jessies hand then back at her mean old messed up face. Nikki then smiled slightly. Pissing off Jessie when Joe was not around was one of her favorit things to do.

"Tenameru you complete moron!" Jessie yelled.

"Oh yeah him, don't worry Jessie I wont," Nikki said as she opened her bedroom room and walked into her room. She then took hold of the door knob and looked out at Jessie. She then smiled brightly witch caught Jessie off guard. "But if I happen to get scared, and he happens to come over and comfort me telling me everything will be all right, I just want to let you know this, I'll love every moment of it!"

Nikki then slammed the door on Jessies face and leaned against it so Jessie could not get in. Jessie started pounding on the door yelling curses at Nikki. But Nikki could have never been better. she totally blew off Jessie one thing she had always wanted to do and it felt so good. When she felt the pounding stop and the storming of foot steps, Nikki stepped away from the door and walked over to her window.

She pushed it opened it and let the sun shine in. No more sun burns for her. She then sat down in her chair next to the open window and looked out side.

"Oh Tenameru, please...please be more then a dream come true...."
