The Oritto Academy-Ch. 1

June 15, ****

Jerome Mack sat in his cramped office. Mr. Mack was stout with dark black skin, black horn-rimmed glasses and a standard white dress shirt/black pants combination. Mr. Mack sighed as he thought about his career. He had rapidly moved through the ranks of the Connecticut Education System, teaching in elementary and middle schools for 20 years. He then worked as an assistant principal for various middle schools for another 10 years. Two years ago, he finally got a chance to be a principal at a decent middle school. Westport Middle School was a normal middle school with good students and decent resources. Mr. Mack thought wryly that no one had told him about Terry Norris.

Mr. Mack growled in his throat as he thought about Terry Norris. Terry was quite simply one of the worst kids he'd ever run into in his career. The little bastard constantly harassed his teachers and most of his fellow classmates. It was like he lived in detention and I.S.S. (In School Suspension) Outright Suspension only kept him out for so long. He really wanted to send him off to boot camp or one of those alternative schools. However, the punk knew just when to back off and be a good boy.

Another thing that confounded him was that Norris was actually a good student. Despite all of his problems, Norris managed to maintain a 3.1 GPA. IQ tests shown that he had a 128 1Q. Norris just didn't like applying himself harder in school. His home life wasn't the problem. His mom was a telemarketer and his dad was a radio announcer. Both were normal people who didn't abuse Norris or anything. Mr. Mack was glad that he was graduating in a week.

Mr. Mack held a letter in his hand. A man came by and told him that Terry Norris was accepted to be a student at the Oritto Academy. Mr. Mack had heard about the reputation of this academy in Japan. He didn't know why they wanted a head case like Norris. He wasn't in charge of admittance. Apparently they saw something in him that could be nurtured. Mr. Mack idly wondered how Terry would be able to school in a different country. But it didn't matter to him. Let them handle the little bugger. Mr. Mack picked up a phone and told the secretary to call Terry Norris out of his class.

Terry Norris was slouching in his desk in his Honors English class. Terry had white skin, with long black hair, blue eyes and a decently muscled 5"3 frame. Terry was wearing a black Atari Teenage Riot t-shirt with blue jeans. Terry idly brushed back a lock of his long black hair out of his blue eyes. He'd gotten into fights with other kids over how he wore his hair. He liked the beatnik look but other kids tried to say he was nothing but a girly man. Of course, the boys had trouble speaking after Terry went to work on them. Terry had a reputation throughout Wesport Middle School as the kid who was going to kick your ass come hell or high water. At this point however, Terry was bored out of his mind. He usually enjoyed Honors English but today he wasn't in the mood for a lecture. After all, today was Friday. Much more important things were to be thought of. His mind was on the basketball game he would play when class was over. Terry sighed as he stretched in the desk. Under these circumstances, he would probably rest his eyes for a spell. However, he didn't want Mrs. Brown to smack him in the back of the head again.

To keep himself awake, Terry looked at his friend Lisa Moore. Lisa was setting beside him listening to Mrs. Brown's lecture attentively. Lisa was about 5"5 with an athletic frame andfair skin She was attired in a white Connecticut Huskies basketball jersey with black pants. Lisa turned and looked at Terry. Lisa smiled at Terry and gave him a quick wink before returning to the lecture. Terry smiled to himself as he thought more about Lisa. In recent months, he had thought about her more as a girlfriend. It was strange to think of her that way but he knew that was how it was going. He found that he kept daydreaming about her green eyes looking at him with merriment or that smile of hers that always brightened a room. His heart would pound if he was real close to her and he would act funny around her. He even liked how her blond hair was cut short, giving her a pixie-like look.

However, he knew that Lisa was a tomboy through and through. Terry couldn't remember her ever wearing a dress or even owning a Barbie doll. Knowing her, she would've probably ripped the doll's arms off. Lisa would always come to his house and play with his G.I. Joes instead. Lisa and her family lived next door to his house. She played basketball just as hard as the guys did. Hell, she probably was better than most of the guys he always played against. He didn't know what to do about this situation. Lisa has been such a good friend to him and he didn't want to lose that friendship. A pleasant female voice sounded in the air. The voice said, "Terry Norris, please report to the principal's office." Terry groaned and got to his feet. Lisa smirked and said, "Hey, T. Have fun in your home away from home." Terry glared at Lisa as the rest of the class laughed at Lisa's remark. Terry walked out of the classroom.

As Terry walked to Mack's office, he wondered why he was getting called to the office. He'd actually kept clean for the past couple of weeks. No fights, no sassing the teachers, nothing even remotely fun. His mom was threatening to take away his computer privileges for the summer. Hence, he had to keep on the straight and narrow. Terry really didn't want to deal with Mr. Mack. Every time he went into the office, it was like he was going into a ring to fight a 10 round heavyweight bout. Of course, he usually came out on top but that didn't mean he had to enjoy it all the time. Besides, Mr. Mack was a sorry-ass principal. Westport Middle School sucked as soon he took charge. The teachers were mediocre and the after-school activities blew chunks. That was part of the reason he lived to annoy Mr. Mack. But the main reason was that he liked to test Mr. Mack's limits. He knew that he wanted to send him off to an alternative school. Too bad he was a good student and knew when to hold back on the bad stuff. Besides, he was graduating in a week and there was nothing he could do to him now. Terry walked past the secretary's desk and stepped into the principal's office.

Terry closed the door and sat down in a chair. Terry looked at Mr. Mack and asked, "What's the problem this time?"

Mr. Mack replied, "Norris, you're not in trouble this time."

"So why am I here? Another lecture on how I'm ruining my life?"

"No, you're here because you got accepted to attend the Oritto Academy."

Terry's eyebrows rose as he replied in shock, "I got into that place?"

Mr. Mack sighed and answered, "Yes, God knows why but you're in." Mr. Mack held a letter in his hand. The principal continued, "The letter will tell you all you need to know."

Terry smiled, "Cool, I'm moving up in the world. Do my parents know?"

"They do and they are the only people other than me and your teachers that SHOULD know."

"Why is that?"

"It's not my job to tell you any more."

Terry snorted, "In other words, they wouldn't tell you anymore information."

"Yeah."

Terry grinned, "I bet you're glad I'm out of your hair now."

Mr. Mack smirked slightly, "You were going to be out of my hair one way or another."

"This is true. Graduation is only a week away."

"Just do me ONE favor."

Terry answered in a sickening sweet voice, "Anything."

"Just don't embarrass this school. After all, you'll be attending one of the greatest academies in the world. Hence, you're representing this school even though you aren't going here anymore."

Terry replied derisively, "Whatever, am I free to go?"

"Yes, get the letter and get out of my sight."

Terry took the letter and remarked, "I love you too." Terry stepped out of the room. Mr. Mack grumbled and got some aspirin out of a drawer. Every conversation with Norris gave him a headache.

Terry walked out of the principal's office and heard the bell ring to end the school day. Terry grinned, glad that he missed the rest of class. Terry walked through the halls and returned to the English class to get his backpack. Terry saw that Lisa was waiting for him in the classroom.

Terry asked, "Why are you still here?"

Lisa responded, "I'm still here because I wanted to know what you did wrong this time. I mean, even you know to be a good boy before we graduate, right?"

Terry's face took on a hurt look as he replied, "Come now, you know I'm not bad all the time."

Lisa laughed and replied, "The only reason you've been good is because your mom is threatening to take away your computer privileges for the summer."

Terry sighed, "You're right, but for real I'm not in any trouble."

"So what's the deal?"

Terry smiled, "The deal is I've been accepted to go to a private high school."

Lisa's face suddenly darkened as she said, "Oh."

"What's wrong, Lisa?"

"I was expecting you to go to district high school with me next year."

Terry's stomach knotted up as he answered, "I'm sorry."

Lisa smiled wanly and replied, "That's okay, where are you going?"

"Umm, I'll be going to a private academy in Japan."

"JAPAN?"

"Yes, Lisa. You know I've always wanted to go there since I was a little boy."

"Terry, you can go there after high school. What's wrong with the school system here?"

"Lisa, it's not that Connecticut schools are that horrible it's just that this school has a worldwide reputation as one of the best."

"What's the name of the school?"

Terry's mind was churning. He could tell her what school it was, but Mack specifically said that the only people that should know about the Oritto Academy are his parents and teachers. Then again, he didn't want to her to be mad at him. He hadn't read the letter from The Oritto Academy

Terry sighed and said, "I can't tell you anything right now."

Lisa looked at Terry in astonishment and said, "What kind of crap is that? You can tell me the name of this great school, can't you?"

Terry grimaced and said, "I can't. At least not until I know more."

Lisa screeched angrily, "Fine, you go ahead and leave me Terry Norris. I don't need you!" Lisa grabbed her bookbag and stormed out of the room.

"Lisa!" Terry cried out. Terry watched as Lisa ran out of the classroom. Terry went over to a desk, sat down and put his head in his hands.

Mrs. Brown came back into the room and saw Terry sitting in the classroom with his head in his hands. Mrs. Brown said in a quiet voice, "Mr. Norris, why are you still here?"

Terry looked up and said, "You know my situation, right?"

"Yes, Mr. Norris."

"The problem is I told Lisa I was going away and she didn't take it well. I couldn't even tell her what the school is."

"I see."

"Exactly, I didn't want to hurt her feelings or anything."

Mrs. Brown sighed and replied, "Mr. Norris, I've watched you and Lisa be as close as two people can be. You going away won't ruin your friendship. Or do you want more than that, Mr. Norris?"

Terry looked at Mrs. Brown in amazement, "What are you talking about?"

Mrs. Brown laughed slightly, "Mr. Norris, I've been a teacher in middle schools for 30 years. I can see the signs of blossoming love. You constantly look only at her during my lectures. Yes, Mr. Norris I know you look at her.

Terry blushed, "That obvious, huh?"

Mrs. Brown smiled, "Yes, Terry it is. Take my advice, just talk to her. She'll understand."

Terry smiled and said, "Hey, that's the first time you've ever said my first name. Why?"

"Well, you have been a delight in my class so I decided to use your first name. Now I have a question for you, Terry."

"Okay."

"Why have you been such a model student in my class this year?"

Terry shrugged, "Lisa is in this class with me. As you said, I usually like to concentrate on her. However, English has always been a favorite subject of mine. You're the best teacher this place has and I really mean that."

Mrs. Brown smiled and said, "Thank you, Mr. Norris. Now go home. After all, you don't want to spend the rest of the weekend with me. Besides, in a week you won't see me anymore."

Terry smiled, put his backpack on and ran out of the room. Mrs. Brown smirked and collected her teaching materials to leave for the weekend.

At 9:00 p.m., Terry Norris was lying on his bed in his room. Terry's room was the normal clutter of a 14 year-old boy. Various comics and books were strewn all over the place. A NY Mets banner was on the wall. Under the banner was a wall scroll of Kenshin and Kaouru from the anime series Ruroni Kenshin. A decent computer system was set up under the wall scroll. Terry held the letter from the Oritto Academy in his hand. He hadn't had the time to read it until now. It was time to see what this place was about. Terry opened the envelope and read the letter. The letter said:

Dear Mr. Norris

Congratulations on your acceptance into the Oritto Academy. You are one of the precious few that has been selected from a large pool of applicants. I am positive that you will make great contributions here, both in and out of the classroom.

You have expressed your great interest in attending Oritto Academy, so expect to receive your orientation package shortly. The package will be delivered directly to your home to reduce any undue publicity. Media all over the world hounds the new students of the Oritto Academy. The package contains an all-expense paid ticket to Oritto Academy via out travel service, a laptop computer, a special weapon fitted just for you (in your case a lightsaber), a virtual reality visor, a universal linguistic translator, and a wristband that you'll use to communicate with your computer. No fee is charged for any of these services-the only requirement needed is your cooperation.

Only your school principal and your parents know about your acceptance to Oritto. The reason for this is to protect you from media attention. Also, various elements want to eliminate this school due to our curriculum.
You are now able to do these three things, which a lot of kids in your position would like to do:

* With the id card, you are now able to purchase a mode of transportation
(bicycle or motorcycle is the preferred mode of choice among the students) and any other necessary items. The card can also be used to give you passage wherever you wish and has no limits. Only you are able to use this card. I've heard about your anime fetish, so I'd advise you to keep it down to 3 major series. (NO Dragonball Z, Ranma 1/2, or Ruroni Kenshin. We only have so much room in the academy)
* You are under constant surveillance. I have sent bodyguards to protect every new Oritto student. If they're doing their job, you won't notice them. I'd advise you not to do anything flagrantly illegal or embarassing.
* No one can search through your personal items unless you want them to. Of course, this includes you, your locker, your room, bags, etc. The identification card will be your reasoning for this effect.

Those three things should be kept in mind from now on. Don't take advantage of these resources or your acceptance will be revoked. I don't believe you'll go that far. You have extraordinary skills that you don't even realize, Mr. Norris. All of this may be strange and unsettling to you, but everything will be revealed to you when the orientation package is delivered to your home in the next couple of days. I am positive that those skills will be honed and put to good use in the years to come.

I can't wait to blaze a new future with you and your classmates.

Sincerely,
(signed)
Azusa Hasegawa
Headmistress

Terry read the letter two more times. Now he had more questions. What were these extraordinary skills Ms. Hasegawa mentioned? He was smart and he had a big IQ, but even he shouldn't be able to get into this academy. It sounded like he was supposed to be something more than an intelligent teenager. There was nothing that special about him. Hell, why was he getting a lightsaber? Was she joking about that part? Then again, she or whoever had to know more about him. Only his mom, dad, and Lisa knew about his love for anime. He was sure that nobody went and told these people about that. He never let anyone else get close enough to figure out what he was about. Also, just what was so dangerous that he needed constant surveillance on him?

One thing he knew for certain. His life was going to be a lot more exciting. Terry couldn't wait until the package got to his house. Terry yawned and put the letter down on his desk. Terry turned off the lights and went to bed, dreaming about what the Oritto Academy would be like.

End Ch. 1

Author's Notes

This series is inspired by Project Orion by b on Fiction Press. I usually don't plug other people's stuff but this deserves it. Her series is described as a normal girl enters an almost mythical high school. Basically, it's Harry-Potter like except she uses different cultures across the world and different types of magic with some mind games thrown in for added measure.

Another note, a lot of what I got down here is off Project Orion (The laptop/id card/surveillance/weapon.) But believe me when I say this is going to be different from what's she doing. One, my high school is set in Japan. Proj. O (England) Two, my lead character is a guy that won't go through as much angst as Rukaiya (female) does in Project Orion. Three, I can't really get that deep into all of the different mythology elements she's got in Project Orion. Four, I guess this is most important. What I'd like is for this to be is a nutty mixture with sci-fi/Revolutionary Girl Utena duel aspects with my own penchant for superhero stuff in there and to hopefully to make Terry and other characters to go through change.

The next chapter will have Terry getting his package from the Oritto Academy along with a conversation with Lisa. Hope people enjoy this.
