The Oritto Academy-Ch.2
June 16, ****
Rain pattered on the windowsill as Terry Norris sat on his bed. He watched the rain come down as he held a guitar in his hand. Terry sighed as he lightly played the cords to Tony Rich's song "Nobody Knows." He'd been playing the guitar since he was eight years old. Terry couldn't remember what drew toward the guitar in the first place. All he knew was that he loved to play. Whenever he played, he always went to another place. This particular song was appropriate considering Lisa didn't know how he felt about her and the pain he was feeling. He tried to get in touch with her multiple times before he read the letter but she either wasn't there or didn't want to answer the phone. Today was no different. Saturday was usually the day in which they hung out together. The damn rain was pouring down too hard for him go next door and talk to her. He really needed to talk to her and set everything straight. He didn't want to leave with her being so mad at him.
Terry's thoughts turned toward The Oritto Academy. The academy was one of the best schools in the world. He didn't believe he had a chance in hell of getting into the Academy. However, he got into the Academy. He was flattered, but some things still worried him. The constant surveillance was one. It bothered him that right now some people were probably watching him play the guitar. Were the bodyguards tapping into his phone conversations? Actually, a more appropriate question was if the bad guys were tapping into his phone conversation. Were they going to storm into his house and kill him and his parents or something? Two, who exactly are the bad guys that wanted to eliminate the Academy? What would be accomplished by destroying the Academy? Three, what was the deal with the light saber? Headmistress Hasegawa had to be joking about that one. He wasn't Luke Skywalker or anything. Then again; what if she wasn't joking? What if he did have unbelievable powers? Terry smirked and yelled in an overly dramatic voice, "I AM GOD, MWAHAHA! DIE, NEFARIOUS EVIL-DOERS!" Terry laughed and shook his head. Lucky for him no one was home, so he could yell all he wanted. Terry heard a knock on the door. Terry wondered who would be stupid enough to be outside right now. Terry opened his door and went downstairs to answer the door.
Terry answered the door and saw a man wearing a uniform like a UPS man. Terry looked at the tall man (brown eyes, short black hair 6"0), dripping wet with a medium -sized brown box in his hand and said, "Thanks, but I don't think the REAL UPS service would brave these conditions to deliver a package."
The deliveryman smirked and said, "Nice deduction. We needed to get your package to you immediately, Mr. Norris."
Terry asked, "Are you one of my bodyguards?"
The deliveryman replied, "Nope, just a guy who does other things for the Academy."
"Okay, can you answer some questions for me?"
"Maybe, can I step inside?"
Terry let the man into the house. Terry asked the deliveryman, "What's your name?"
The man smiled and answered, "My name is Mitch."
Terry held out his hand and Mitch shook it. Mitch sat down and said, "Okay, Mitch. Let's start with this question. Who's the big bad boogeyman that Headmistress Hasegawa is afraid of?"
Mitch said, "There's a bunch of people who want to destroy the school. Since I don't have all day the main organizations that have been searching for the school is The Golden Glocks and the yakuza. Various other criminal elements want to take out the school."
"Why? I mean I always thought The Oritto Academy was just an very exclusive academy."
"And it is, but not just for academic purposes."
Terry said, "What, am I really supposed to have superpowers or something?"
Mitch shrugged and said, "Can't tell you anymore, man."
Exasperated, Terry said, "Fine, are you one of my bodyguards?"
"Nope."
"Are they tracing my calls?"
"No, I do know they don't do that. Listen, my advice to you is to open up the package there and you'll have more answers to your questions."
Terry sighed and said, "Okay, I assume you have to get going."
Mitch got up and said, "Yep, so I'll be seeing you." Mitch tipped his cap and walked out of the house. Terry sighed and went upstairs to his room with the orientation package from the Oritto Academy.
Terry firmly locked the door and put the package on his bed. He knew no one here with him and his parents knew about his acceptance to the Oritto Academy. But he didn't trust any damn body right now. Terry looked at the package and felt apprehension. For all he knew, all of this could be an elaborate prank. Terry shook his head and ripped open the cardboard box.
He looked and saw two metallic briefcases in the middle of the box. Terry opened one and saw a thin silver laptop computer in the briefcase. In a pocket above the laptop, Terry saw an envelope. Terry assumed that was the ticket for passage to the Academy. In another pocket, Terry saw the wristband he was supposed to wear to communicate with his laptop. Terry opened the second briefcase and saw his identification card. The card was black and laminated with his name in front in red letters. Beside the identification card was the virtual reality visor. The visor was red and was modeled like Lt. Forge's sight visor on Star Trek: The Next Generation. (A/N: This is probably the only time you'll see me willingly reference Star Trek, :)) In the corner away from the visor, a silver handle greeted Terry. Terry looked at the handle and said, "No damn way." Above the handle was the universal language translator. The ULT was just a simple gold pin with the crest of the Oritto Academy. (A golden cursive O)
Terry first opened the envelope and saw two tickets in it. He wondered why it was two when he it was just supposed to be him. Terry said, "Well now, let's see how this laptop works." Terry gently lifted the laptop out of the briefcase and set it down. Terry wondered how he was supposed to turn the damn thing on. He didn't see any kind of plugs on the back. Terry opened the laptop and saw a small button in the left corner of the keyboard that was different from the usual functions. Terry pressed it and the laptop whirred to life.
A cute female voice said, "Hey, Terry. What's going on?"
Terry jumped back and screamed, "WHAT THE FUCK!" (A/N: I usually don't break out the F-bomb but that's how I would react if a computer were asking me what was up.)
The voice continued, "Now, now, there's no need for such language in front of a lady."
Terry thundered, "Lady! You're an inanimate object!"
The voice retorted, "Well, go ahead and ruin my fun why don't you?"
Terry calmed down, "Okay, what am I supposed to call you?"
"Call me Chikako."
"Okay, Chikako." Terry was disturbed by how quickly he was starting to accept the fact that he was talking to a computer. Terry looked closer and saw a small camera lens above the screen of the laptop. He couldn't see any speakers, but there had to be a way her voice was being broadcasted.
Terry shrugged and said, "I don't know how you're speaking to me."
Chikako replied, "Does it matter?"
"I guess not. So Chikako what exactly is going on?"
Chikako laughed, "You have to be more specific, Terry."
Terry couldn't believe that a computer could even laugh at him. The teen quickly shrugged off that thought and asked, "First off, is the Oritto Academy really an academic school?"
"Oh yeah, you'll be knee-deep in homework but there's more to the Academy than that."
Terry exulted, "Finally, some answers. What ELSE am I supposed to worry about?"
"Mr. Norris, you have more skills than you can imagine. The Oritto Academy keeps track of people like you."
Terry looked back at his laptop in puzzlement, "What's the big deal? I'm just very intelligent."
"Yes, but you have more than intelligence going for you."
A bit exasperated, Terry sighed and said, "I don't understand."
"Okay, go ahead and pick up the silver handle there."
Terry picked up the handle. He didn't see a switch or anything. Terry shrugged and said, "So?"
"So, close your eyes." Terry closed his eyes. Chikako asked, "Do you feel anything?"
Terry felt a little tingle shoot through his body. Terry said, "Well, I do feel a tingle." As Terry's eyes were closed, a white energy blade came forth. Terry felt the heat from the sword as his opened his eyes. Terry looked at the sword in amazement.
Chikako commented, "Only you have the power to activate that silver handle. As you saw, there weren't any power switches on it."
Terry said shakily, "Okay, how the hell do I turn this off?"
"Close your eyes and think that you want to turn off the blade." Terry closed his eyes and the blade turned off.
Terry remarked, "Okay, this is getting too crazy."
"Yes, you have a special power in you."
"So The Force is with me now or something?"
"You can say that."
Terry drawled, "Great, so can my parents do stuff like this?"
"Well, they can. This is what the Oritto Academy is about. The Academy's job is to help harness your powers and use it for good."
Terry snarled, "Well, what happens if I just don't want to bother with this crap."
Chikako replied in a deadpan, "Then you go on through life, at least until a bad guy kidnaps you and makes you a killing machine. Or maybe some other people kill you just because you showed off."
"So to recap, I can apparently make a lightsaber in addition to my great intellect. Now, I'm going to this Academy to polish my newly discovered powers for good. If I turn evil, I'm dead."
"Right."
"My head hurts. Why the HELL didn't my parents say anything about ANY of this. I mean, the first time I see Dad kick someone's ass Hell will freeze over."
"Listen, both of your parents didn't have this opportunity before. They really had it bad back in the day."
"What do you mean?"
"The Academy has only been in existence for 20 years. From what we could gather, both of your parents had real big problems controlling their powers. Your dad REALLY went off one some racist people. And your mom wasn't much better."
"Do I really want to know how many people they killed?"
"No, but to their credit they managed to see the light and realize that mass genocide wasn't the answer. The Academy doesn't want that to happen to you."
Terry shook his head and said, "This is too much. I mean, am I a mutant or what?"
"No, you're just blessed with different skills than other people."
Terry snorted, "Joy, I guess I understand now."
Chikako replied, "Glad to help."
"So what can YOU do, Chikako."
"I can do a whole lot, Terry. First, go over and put on that VR visor." Terry picked up the visor and put it on. Terry saw nothing but his room in a dark red light.
Chikako said, "Close your eyes again." Terry closed his eyes and felt another tingle in him. Terry opened his eyes and saw that he was no longer looking at his room. Terry was seeing a field with cherry blossom trees sprinkled abound. A light breeze floated in the air as Terry saw a black haired woman sitting under a tree. The woman looked to be in her early to mid twenties, slightly taller (5"5) than he was with brown hair and a slim frame. The woman was Japanese with brown eyes and was wearing a camouflage top with her tummy exposed and gray pants.
The woman smiled and said, "Hello, Terry."
Terry whispered, "Is that you, Chikako?"
Chikako smiled, "In the flesh, well not quite."
Terry looked at Chikako and said, "You're a Goddess."
Chikako replied, "Thanks for the name."
Terry asked, "How?"
Chikako said, "You know about Virtual Reality, correct?"
"Yeah, I know the basic concept."
"Your power is connecting to me via the visor."
"So I could change this peaceful setting into a club?"
"Sure, just think it and it'll happen."
Terry thought and the setting changed into a rave club. Chikako was dancing with some guys on the dance floor. Terry said, "This is cool. Can I like put my like put my whole body into this setting instead of just looking at it."
Chikako said, "Yep, just think it."
Terry grinned and thought about jumping into the club. Terry zapped himself into the club, wearing all leather. Terry walked over to Chikako and the two began dancing.
Chikako remarked, "You know you're a bad boy with the leather bit."
Terry shrugged, "I know." Terry grimaced and felt a wincing pain in his head. Chikako said, "Get out of here." Terry got out of the image. In fact, he took off the visor in a rush. Terry groaned in pain as Chikako said, "I'm sorry. You're not ready for extended time with the visor. If you spend too much time in there, you really hurt yourself."
Terry said, "I'm okay, Chikako."
Chikako said, "No, I should've known better. My purpose is to serve you and I almost led you into some major damage."
"Chikako, don't beat yourself up over this really. Oh, can you experience emotions?"
"I can, since I'm connected to you and all."
"Just checking, so what's the deal with the two tickets for my passage to the Academy?"
"You can bring a guest no older than 15 with you."
"Cool. So where exactly is The Academy located?"
"On a secret island just off Tokyo, Japan. Just for the record, you're going to go right?"
Terry shrugged, "Of course I am. I'm kind of freaked out knowing I have all of this power and all, but I have to admit that this will be a lot more interesting than just being a normal kid."
Chikako said, "Good, anymore questions?"
"Do we get to go off the island?"
"Occasionally, but the Academy is so hooked up you don't need to go anywhere."
"What's the deal with the wristband?"
"Oh, that's to communicate with me. You need to wear it on your non writing hand."
"The ULT?"
"The Universal Language Translator Pin helps you translate every language on the planet. You're going to need it since students come from all over the world." Terry and Angel continued to talk for a couple of hours. Terry looked up and saw that the rain had stopped. Terry exulted, "Yes, I'll be back okay." Chikako said, "Okay." Terry grabbed his keys, turned Chikako off and ran out the door. Terry scrambled down the stairs and ran out the front door. Terry closed the door, locked up the house and went next door to the Moore residence.
Terry knocked on the door. Mrs. Moore answered the door. Mrs. Moore (an older, taller version of Lisa) was wearing a simple dress. Mrs. Moore smiled and said, "Hello, Terry."
Terry answered, "Good afternoon, Mrs. Moore. Is Lisa home?"
"She's here, do you want to talk to her?"
"Yes, I do."
"Okay, but what happened between you two? She's been really upset."
Terry sighed and said, "I told her I was going to a academy in Japan. She didn't like that."
"Oh, I'll let you two work it out."
"Thank you."
"Stop talking to me and go already."
Terry walked into the house and went upstairs to go to Lisa's room. Mrs. Moore smiled slightly as she was sure that the two would patch things up.
Terry knocked on the door. Lisa yelled loudly, "Mom, I told you I'm fine!" Lisa went to open the door and saw Terry standing there.
Lisa said quietly, "Terry."
Terry asked, "Can I come in?"
"Fine." Lisa stepped aside and Terry walked into the room.
Terry sat on Lisa's bed and he thought that this one of the few times he'd been actually been in her room. Lisa's room was a lot neater than his room. Her computer was on a desk in a corner and various posters of Ray Allen, Rebecca Lobo, Jen Rizzotti, and Khalid El-Amin were on the walls. (A/N: These were some of the star players on the men's and women's Connecticut Huskies basketball team in recent years.)
Terry said quietly, "Okay, we're going to talk about this."
Lisa grumbled, "What's there to talk about? You're leaving me for some mythical place."
Terry thought that she didn't know how right she was. Terry said, "First off, you know that I've always wanted to study overseas sooner or later."
Lisa replied, "After high school, Terry. I don't understand why you have to go now."
"The Oritto Academy wants me to go there."
Lisa looked at Terry in astonishment, "THAT SCHOOL?"
"Yes, that one. By the look of surprise on your face, I assume you've heard of the place."
"I have and I'm surprised you got in. I mean I have a higher GPA than you do and I do a LOT more community service than you do. Where's my invitation?"
Terry shrugged, "I don't know, but what I don't get is why you reacted this way? It wasn't like I was going anywhere right away."
Lisa sighed, "I know, but when you said that I just felt awful. You and I have been best friends since we were ankle biters. It just won't be the same next year without you."
Terry smiled kindly, "It's not the end of the world. We can write each other and besides we still have a month or so before I go. Oh, I just remembered that I can take a guest with me when I go. I'd like for you to come with me."
Lisa smiled and said, "I'd love to."
Terry smiled and said, "Good, is everything okay now."
Lisa grinned, "We're fine now."
Terry thought that it was now or never. He had to tell her how he felt about her. Terry said quietly, "Lisa, I have something to tell you."
Lisa looked at her friend in concern, "Are you okay? You're sweaty and your face is red."
Terry answered, "I'm just going to say it. I love you."
Lisa said, "As a friend, I know."
Terry shook his head, "No, I don't think you understand Lisa. I mean I LOVE YOU"
Lisa's green eyes widened as she said, "You mean as boyfriend and girlfriend?" Terry nodded.
Lisa sighed and said, "T, I don't feel that way towards you." Lisa couldn't have hurt him more at that moment if she shot him 10 times with a .45 magnum.
Terry croaked, "Why?"
"I think of you as a buddy. You know, like the little brother I never had."
Terry thundered, "What kind of logic is that? I'm older than you by a year!"
"I can't help how I feel."
Terry replied in an angry tone, "You took the words out of my mouth, Lisa."
Lisa said softly, "Don't act like this."
Terry fumed, "How do you expect me to act? I just confessed my love to you and you shot it down."
Lisa sighed, "I should've known before. I was too blind to see the signs. You had all sorts of girls on you and you pushed them away."
"That's right, I pushed them away for YOU. No one can compare to you."
"I can't be with you in that way. We can be friends, but that's all."
Terry got off Lisa's bed and said sullenly, "Fine."
Lisa was on the verge of tears as she said, "Don't leave angry with me."
Terry replied sadly, "I'll be okay. Just don't bother me for a while. Can you handle that?" Lisa gasped as Terry stalked out of the room. Terry ran down the staircase and yelled, "Goodbye, Mrs. Moore!" Terry slammed the door and Mrs. Moore, who was in the kitchen said softly, "Goodbye."
With tears in his eyes, Terry unlocked the door to his house and went back inside the house. Terry locked the door and ran upstairs to his room. Terry slammed the door and turned on Chikako. Terry then jumped onto the bed and sobbed into his pillow. Chikako said, "Hey, welcome back." Chikako saw her owner crying and said, "What's wrong?" Terry composed himself enough to say, "Do you have any Tony Rich in your database?"
Chikako replied as sadly as a computer can, "I have any music you need."
"Fine, just start from the first song on the Words CD and keep going." Terry had the CD but he was too distraught to get it himself. As Tony Rich filtered in the air, Terry cried himself to sleep.
End Ch. 2
Author's Notes
Man, another chapter in a day. I only did that one other time and the series I did it for isn't up anymore. Emotion drove me that time. I'm not sure what drove me to finish this chapter so quickly. I guess my creative juices were flowing.
As far as why I named the laptop Chikako I'm paying homage to one of my favorite Japanese female wrestlers, "The Goddess" Chikako Shiratori. I tried to describe her as well as possible in text, but I believe you'd be better served to check out this picture at:
http://www.cherrybabe.com/michiku/Profiles/c-shiratori.html
Too bad she retired this year. DAMNIT! I hope I did a decent enough job with the sci-fi elements. While I love sci-fi, I can't say I'm that adept at writing about it. This chapter was pretty conversation driven, but I guess that's to be expected to answer questions and all. The end thing between Terry and Lisa was originally going to end up being a kiss. However, I wanted Terry to feel some pain, so there you go. In the spirit of always trying to have something happen on the third chapter of my series, Terry will have a chat with the parents (via flashback), buy a motorcycle, mention graduation (to be honest, I don't remember what happened in my junior high graduation) and meet up with a special person.
I'm done for right now so I wish you all
Peace, love, and hair grease
