Fan Fiction ❯ The Tales of Lady Midnight and Jason Dark ❯ Chapter 3 ( Chapter 3 )
"Well, aren’t we the volatile one? Do you like our little invisible fence?
Primitively simple, but up the voltage and you have an effective containment device. Most have been killed from the shock." They took me back to a padded cell where I was chained to a wall, my wristband removed, and promptly a collar was fashioned to my neck.
"Next time it may just fry you brain, if you windpipe doesn’t collapse." The three of them left and all I could do was hang there. I don’t know how long I was there, but the constant change between the animal, the black suit, and myself
kept me from losing my last shred of sanity.
I was there for quite a while. How long I was not quite sure, all I did know was two simple facts: My name is Melissa, and I don’t belong here. My mental state hung by a thread, eventually that thread began to fray. I was now in the black suit and had been there for what felt like days when the man from the chair, I had come to know him as doctor Knight, came over the speaker that was in the cell.
"Ahhh, I see we have not tried to escape today."
"I am still breathing and it is my guess that the day still is not over." I had grown accustomed to the low gruff voice that had replaced my own. It had been an eternity since I had been myself. My body mostly switched between the animal and the black suit. I had also become used to the constant cat and mouse game that went on between Dr. Knight and myself. This particular day, Dr. Knight’s smile was even more sadistic than usual.
"I have a treat for you." he sneered, " This is Dr. Allen. He as flown in just to see you."
"You mean torture me."
"Sadly, no, I am the only one who wishes to do that, but the higher ups wish to study you." He babbled on some more, but I had learned long ago to tune him out. The other guy was talking too, asking me questions, but I had already reverted back into my own little world. A mild but paralyzing shock brought me unwillingly back into my own personal hell. (One of Knight’s little torture devices, a remote that activates the collar, not as strongly as the fence, but still annoying.) He created it after one of my many escape attempts it was one of the many ways that he found to toy with and torture me. Just then Dr. Allen said something, but one word in particular stuck with me: freedom. At this time I still only knew two facts: I don’t belong here, and I was going to get out.
The next time that Knight came around I put my plan into action. It was a simple one let Knight think he had won. I was in my prison, body limp, head down and submissive. I had no idea if he would believe this rouse, but I had to play it out just right to make my escape.
" And what torture will we bring upon ourselves toady?" He laughed just like a villain from a really bad movie.
"I give up." I whispered as weakly as possible, being sure to keep my head down and submissive.
"What trick is this?"
"No trick." I replied, locking up every bit of truth. "I told you before, I hate small enclosed places, and this place is grinding on my nerves."
"That would explain you heightened state of excitement, and thus the current state you have maintained." He thought for a moment. "You want something, tell me what it is." He bought it.
"Just to sit. Somewhere there are no walls."
"I can make that happen, but only of you agree to finally let us run some tests on you."
"Anything." Trying to contain my reaction to the sweet taste of victory.
"Good, well I guess I should hold up my end of the bargain. Let’s get you some sun then." My plan was coming together perfectly, even the time of day was right. Knight shackled my ankles and wrists we both knew I could easily break them. He was just testing, even provoking me, but I had to keep up my charade. When he led me outside, my head ached once more. My eyes had to adjust to the bright warm sunlight. As soon as my vision registered, the black suit was gone. I almost thought that my plan would not go as planned, but I relaxed and felt the animal instinct disperse itself throughout my veins. I was in animalistic form. Not as strong as I hoped, but strong enough.
"Maybe you were truthful after all. You have ten minutes. Still, I think I’ll hang on to this." He tugged on the chain connecting my shackles together
"Could you undo at least one set of these that I may enjoy my time?"
He reluctantly took the shackles off of my ankles fore he thought it too dangerous for my hands to be free. I stretched as best I could, lied out in the soft grass and pretended to enjoy the sunshine. Actually, I almost fell asleep for the first time in what seemed like months. Which was unusual and very bad. I had to initiate my plan now, while Knight was distracted by a noise from the woods. I slowly and carefully loosened the shackles that bound my wrists. I stood up and ran for the perimeter Knight just held on to the chain laughing. He threw out another shackle that attached it self to my neck.
"You won’t escape this time either. The shock may even kill you."
"Not this time you monster." I growled. I ran dragging him. My plan worked, but too well, since there was contact between the collar and the metal shackle on my neck I felt almost nothing as I crossed the border. Knight on the other hand felt what it was like to become fried chicken. As my restraints released their grip I heard Knight’s Cajun style carcass hit the ground with a sickening crack. I had a feeling that his life would not be the last one on my hands. I ran into the woods where I collapsed in exhaustion and sleep overcame me.
