Fan Fiction ❯ The Tales of Lady Midnight and Jason Dark ❯ Chapter 4 ( Chapter 4 )

When I awoke, I found myself in someone’s apartment. I was laid out on the couch covered by ruffled sheets. I was, well, human. I had no clue as to where I was or how I got there. I grabbed at my neck the dreaded collar was gone. I was dressed in oversized silk pajamas. I stood up, it was dark, but things were fairly easy to make out due to the large window that took up a major portion of the wall. I walked to the window and looked out. Below me was a city, which one I wasn’t sure, and this particular apartment was on the top floor of the building. Any other time I would have attempted to escape, but I felt no danger and that couch felt great to my tired body. For the first time in a long time I felt safe.

For once, I woke up in the same place that I had fallen asleep I sat up and stretched, the sun streamed down on me all warm and welcoming.

"I see that you are finally awake." A vaguely familiar and masculine voice entered my ears. I looked in the direction of the voice. There before me stood a disturbingly handsome man around my age. (Whatever age that may be.) He

was about six foot four inches tall. He had sandy brown hair and bright green eyes. He sat down next to me. "Here, I know it won’t do anything, but it should comfort you." He handed me a cup of hot liquid. I took a sip, it was a tea of some sort, and he was right it did comfort me. I felt a little strange being around this guy, but he had helped me so far. I shifted in my seat and finally spoke.

"W…w…where am I?"

"At my apartment."

"How..how..how did I get here?"

"I came back for you, like I promised." That’s when it clicked.

"Yo..yo..you saved me from th…th…that place."

"Are you always this grateful?" He laughed, "Yes, but you were gone from the alley when I came back. Still, I have been following you for the past year trying to make sure you were O.K."

"It has been a year?"

"Unfortunately, I need to give you this before I can tell you any more." He held up a large syringe filled with a red liquid.

"What’s that?"

"It gives you more control without the pain."

"Why didn’t you just give it to me while I was sleeping…this is just another lab isn’t it?" Even though I felt no danger, I began to panic.

"I wanted your permission first, and this is not just another lab. At least not as you know them. I understand if you are weary of this, but you will die if you go much longer without it." I couldn’t argue with that. I put my arm out and turned my head, he emptied the needle into my vein.

"I thought you said without the pain. This stuff is burning through my veins."

"That is only temporary it is making you impervious to pain or vital injuries." I looked at my wrist that had been scarred by the band. Before my eyes the ugly scarred skin became smooth again.

"Finishing off? O.K. I took your shot. You better explain yourself."

"Well, you were right about the lab. It was me who got you out, but I was also the one who held you down, Melissa." That name sounded foreign to me.

"Who’s Melissa?"

"You mean you don’t even remember your own name?"

"I barely remember anything outside this hell. When I was in that lab I knew that I had to get out. Now that I’ve done that I have no clue what to do."

"Melissa,"

"Don’t call me that without giving me your name first."

"Fine, you can call me Jason," his tone was not quit as gentle as before; the way I was acting might have been annoying, but what else would you expect from someone who has been through all that I have. "You are the product of an experiment called project midnight. You are not the first to go through the process, but one of two that actually survived." He sounded as though a bad memory had come into his mind. "You were codenamed Lady Midnight. There

will be no more lives ruined by this ghastly project; the government has disposed of everyone involved. I avoided this fate and blew up the lab before anyone could get their hands on the research."

"You mean I am stuck forever?"

" Basically, and you should change forever into eternity, you are practically immortal."

"Immortal?

"Yes," he began to sound nervous; "I kind of need your measurements if

you would like some clothes to wear." A childish tone came to his voice as he

held up the tape measure "should you do it or should I?" We took my measurements and just before he left he said, "Don’t go anywhere until I get back. I’ll tell you more then."

I sat there for a moment and gazed around the room. I had some fuzzy memories of what a few things were. I found a small black rectangular box with small buttons all over it. I pressed a red one at that moment a big box in front of me lit up. I almost remembered what this was I did remember that it could tell me what had happened in the past year. Not much had changed (as far as I was able to see.) and I grew bored. I knew that I was in a big city which one I wasn’t sure. Nor did I care. So, I decided to explore. I went into the kitchen. I was not hungry, but I was curious. I looked in the fridge; there was nothing, same with the cupboards. I searched the entire kitchen and found only a few teacups, a kettle, and three kinds of herbal teas. Though this struck me as odd, I just blew it off. I found a bathroom with a tub that could have doubled as an Olympic pool. For some reason the idea of a bath seemed very good to me especially since it had been a year ago that I last had one. I filled the tub with hot water and bubbles. I noticed that there were a lot of herbal scented candles and such all over the bathroom. This guy sure had a thing for herbs. I stripped off the pajamas and slid under the counterpane of bubbles and into the cradling water. I slid completely under the bubbles and into the water. It actually made me sleepy, this was a feeling that I did not resist.

I woke up surrounded by water. I shot my head up; I had fallen asleep in the tub. How long had I been under there? I heard a door open and shut. I did not think anything of it until I heard a voice say:

"I thought I told her not to go anywhere." The bathroom door opened and he stepped in and closed it.

"Hello," I said. He jumped about six feet into the air.

"What are you doing in here?" He squeaked, obviously embarrassed, but for some reason I was unaware of this situation.

"I was bored and dirty, so I looked for a bathroom." It came out so innocent and unknowing I even surprised myself. "I’ll get out if you wish." I stood up and he immediately turned his eyes away while throwing a towel at me. I dried off and drained the tub.

"I uhh…got you a few clothes." He tossed a large bag in my direction. The large shirt and fluffy pants felt great. "I’ll take you out later to get more things." He led me out the door then promptly shut himself inside the bathroom and

locked the door. I heard the water begin to run and the scent of candles being lit filled my nose. That brings us up to where we are now. As I began telling you this tale, I began to forget. My oldest memory is of being pulled through that dreaded brick wall.
