Alex awaited the arrival of the mages with nervous anticipation. Kiba, Aurora, and Shadow were the only demon’s left in Alex’s castle. All the others were off attending to their own affairs today, which made it the perfect time for the meeting to take place. When Alex contacted the mages he told them very little of what they were needed for. All he told them was to bring all their spell books and to ensure that none were left behind.
Kiba stood staring out a window, his mind a jumble of darkened thoughts. As he gazed out the window he looked at the path that the mages were sure to come on, silently dreading the fact that they were coming at all. Kiba’s attention was broken as he heard someone open the door behind him. Kiba turned around to see the nervous faces of Aurora and Shadow staring back at him. Kiba sighed and turned to look back out the window as he spoke. “They should be here soon.”
“That’s what worries us,” Aurora said dryly. When Kiba turned back to look at her, he could tell that there was more on her mind.
“What is it lass? Thoughts are best used by expressing themselves. It is not good to keep your thoughts to yourself lass.” Kiba stopped and glanced back at the window before continuing. “Especially in times as troubled as these are.”
Aurora nodded slowly before taking a deep breath before finally revealing what had been plaguing her thoughts as of late. “I was wonder what if...what if Alex really is able to bring Brittany back?”
Kiba glanced at Shadow, to see if he had any similar thoughts. Despite Shadow’s best attempts to hide it, Kiba could tell that Shadow too had thoughts about this. Kiba sighed and shook his head slowly. “I don’t know lass. I really don’t know.”
Now that she finally had a chance to express her thoughts, Aurora wasn’t about to let the opportunity pass her by. “Still, I mean, if he can bring her back that means he could bring anyone back right? That means no one would have to die anymore, that means that he could bring Celeste back.”
A smirk formed on Kiba’s face as he realized what Aurora was suggesting. By this time, all three demons were facing the window. The light from which gave Kiba’s face a sinister appearance. “Why would I want her back?”
The sudden change in Kiba’s tone took the two young wolf demons by surprise. Shadow exchanged a confused look with Aurora before turning his attention back to Kiba. “Kiba, are you feeling alright?”
Kiba looked at Shadow quizzically before nodding quickly. Shadow noted that his voice and his demeanor returned to normal as he answered. “Aye, I am alright. Don’t think I’m crazy just yet lad, not until I’ve explained myself.”
“Well, what do you mean? I would’ve thought you’d jump at the chance to bring Celeste back to life,” Aurora stated. She was obviously confused by Kiba’s strange actions.
“Aye, a part of me would want nothing more than to have Celeste back in my arms again, but I know that those who die, die for a reason. Right now, Celeste is where she is supposed to be. The nether realm doesn’t take kindly to losing those who it has rightfully claimed. Take the lad for example. I don’t believe he was turned into a demon because he was brought to life using the flesh of demons. While that theory is highly possible, I believe it was a curse for cheating death. I wouldn’t dare do that to Celeste, not without knowing the consequences. Cheating death is not something taken lightly, nor is trying to play God by resurrecting the dead. The lad is messing in things that are far above him, I pray he knows what he is doing.”
“I didn’t know you knew so much about resurrecting the dead, Kiba,” a voice announced, coming from behind the three demons.
The voice nearly caused the group of demons to jump out of their skins. The demons turned around to meet the source of voice, upon seeing him Aurora let out a sigh of relief. “Alex don’t do that! You nearly scared me half to death!”
She was expecting Alex to at least chuckle at her outburst. Instead, Alex looked at her with a stone face. She was about to inquire why he was so solemn, that is, until she followed his gaze. Alex was staring out the window and just above the horizon the forms of the mages could be seen making their way towards the castle.
“They’re here,” Alex said softly, turning around to go downstairs and greet his guest.
The three wolves exchanged glances before hesitantly following Alex towards the front doors. Each one was absorbed by their own thoughts. Each one, silently wondering what was about to happen. Each one, wanting to know more but afraid to ask. Finally Shadow spoke in a hushed whisper, breaking the silence.
“Well, it looks like we’re about to find out one way or another if Alex will be able to bring her back.”
Aurora glanced at Alex who was walking ahead of them. She shook her head in disbelief as she looked back at her friends. “I wonder, if we get Brittany back, will we also get Alex back too?”
“What do you mean lass?”
“Well, look at how Alex acts now. When Brittany died, all his emotions and feelings died with her. All he is now is a ghost of his former self. Maybe if he gets Brittany back, he’ll be better off,” Aurora suggested.
“For his sake and for Brittany’s sake, I hope he can. I just hope he doesn’t have to destroy all he has built in the process,” Shadow said knowing that if the only way Alex could bring Brittany back, was with sacrificing lives, it would be only a matter of time before the people started calling for Alex’s blood. This ominous thought was shared between the three demons as they watched as Alex opened up the doors.
“For his sake and for the lass’s, I hope he knows what he is getting himself into,” Kiba said as the mages descended upon the castle doors.
The icy cold glares coming from the mages instantly revealed to the group that this visit would not be pleasant. Despite all Alex had done, and all that had been revealed about Alex’s origins, the mages still held deep contempt towards him. The fact that Alex now had a favor to ask of them did not hold well for him. The head mage, who looked to be in his late forties, had shoulder length brown hair and piercing brown eyes. His beard added to his appearance, combining with his gold and white robes to give him a regal appearance. Even in simple attire and suffering nearly a week in his own personal Hell, Alex’s nobility was evident. The rich and colorful robes of the head mage seemed laughable in comparison to Alex’s darker clothes. Especially considering the fact that even then, Alex still had the grace and dignity of a Lord, which called forth the attention and respect of those who he encountered.
“Come in, I have much I need to ask of you,” Alex said getting straight to the point.
The head mage’s eyes flashed with anger at Alex’s cold demeanor. The mage locked eyes with Alex before speaking. “We have traveled far for this. I hope this matter is of grave importance for us to make such a hasty journey.”
“To you, this matters little. To me, it is worth my life,” Alex calmly stated.
“I understand that you wanted us to bring all our spell books,” the mage started. “That alone is a ridiculous and preposterous idea worthy only of fools. Do you really think we’d travel through the forest carrying our most precious artifacts in plain sight, making them prey to thieves and demons?”
Kiba, Aurora, and Shadow’s eyes all widened with the revelation that the mages did not bring the spell books. “This isn’t going to end well,” Kiba said beneath his breath. Though the change in Alex’s demeanor was slight, they could tell that this news greatly upset him. Alex’s calm and friendly smile faltered for a second. Alex had put his last bit of hope and faith into the hands of the mages. With this new news, all his hopes had been crushed before he was ever able to start.
Alex’s eyes were filled with suppressed hate and rage as he spoke. It was obvious to those that knew him, that he was trying his best to keep his emotions in check. “I know you don’t like me and it’s no secret that I don’t hold any love for you mages. Still, I did not ask you here to fight. I need your help, or at the very least, I need your wisdom. Torin, I have never once called on you without need so don’t be so quick to rise to anger. I will give you fair warning, I have been through Hell these past few days and my patience is not something you want to test as of now.”
“So, if I don’t help you what are you going to do? Are you going to revert back to might makes right? Isn’t that what Alcadan called it? I can’t remember, but I believe it was something to that affect. Once your father is gone you instantly go back to your old ways. What a shame.”
Alex’s eyes narrowed in anger as he glared at Torin. He flexed his hands menacingly, using every ounce of self control he possessed to keep him from tearing Torin limb from limb.
Torin smiled evilly as he realized that Alex wouldn’t do anything to him. This thought gave him new confidence and allowed him to say more. “Or, is it the fact that without your human wench beside you, you don’t have the guts to do anything? Is that it? Have you lost your will to fight?”
Everyone in the room, even the other mages, held their breaths for what they knew was about to happen. Even those close to Torin could not believe the boundary that he had just crossed, even more so, they could not believe Alex’s reaction to Torin’s taunts.
A feral growl emitted itself from Alex’s throat, even then Alex stood his ground and made no attempt to attack Torin. Instead Alex looked away in disgust and shame as he silently cursed himself for what he was about to do. “You can say what you want about me, but don’t you dare say anything about Brittany.”
“Or you’ll do what?”
Author's Note: Nothing too much to say today. But I will say this, as much of a madman as Alex is becomming, he hasn't lost all of his self control. He's just willing to do anything to get Brittany back. To him, getting Brittany back is everything. Even is even willing to give up his pride and his life to bring her back.
Kiba stood staring out a window, his mind a jumble of darkened thoughts. As he gazed out the window he looked at the path that the mages were sure to come on, silently dreading the fact that they were coming at all.
