Out of the corner of his eye, Alex could see Aurora running towards the injured Kiba. Alex turned around so that his back was to them as he spoke. “I am sorry, but regardless of what you might think of me, I will not let anyone stop me. This is something I have to do. You do not have to condone my actions, but please do not stand against me. All those you stand against me or try to stop me will fall by my hands. Despite all we have been through, I will not hesitate to kill you.”
Aurora helped Kiba to his feet and checked his wounds, which to her shock, were not as serious as she thought they were. Alex pulled back on his attack. He barely grazed Kiba’s face. In fact, his wounds have already begun to heal.
Kiba gazed intently at Alex, even though he couldn’t see Alex’s face, he could sense something. Kiba closed his eyes and sighed before saying what was on his mind. “Lad, do not be afraid to weep for the dead.”
Alex tensed at Kiba’s words and Kiba realized he had guessed correctly. “What the Hell are you talking about?” Alex asked softly.
Aurora and Shadow exchanged confused glances as Alex turned around once again to face Kiba. “What makes you think that I want to cry over her death? I know I will see her again, it would be unlogical to cry over something so stupid.”
Everyone’s eyes lit up with understanding as they heard the hidden meaning behind Alex’s words. Kiba only shook his head as he continued. “Despite what you might say, I believe your heart feels something different.”
Alex hesitated for an instant. In that instant his confidence and anger faltered. It was in that instant that Shadow and Aurora saw what Kiba had seen all along.
Despite what it may seem, Alex’s decision to bring her back is tearing himself apart. He knows that he’s giving himself false hope, but he doesn’t want to let go of her. He hasn’t been able to grieve like he should, because of the fact that he believes there is a way to bring her back, Shadow thought with an enlightened look on his face.
“Alex, you have seen much death in your life, but never before have you lost anyone you have cared about. Death has been a part of your life, but now you truly get a sense of deaths finality. You lost someone dear to you and because of that you want to find a way to bring her back. The strength of your love is truly admirable. What I do not admire, however, is the way you intend to bring her back. I know you have the power to bring her back, but where do you intend to gain the knowledge?”
Alex took a deep breath before turning around to face Kiba. It was apparent to everyone that Alex was physically and mentally drained; showing that the weeks events had taken a toll on both Alex’s body and mind. He ran his hand through his long white hair and it seemed as if for an instant, the beast within Alex had withdrawn for now. Alex wearily gazed at the group before telling them his answer. “The only people alive who would know about the secrets of necromancy are the same people who have tried to kill me on several occasions. As crazy and illogical as it may seem, the only people that would possess any knowledge at all about the arcane arts I need to know are the mages. If I can talk to them, then maybe they will be able to shed some light into what I need to do.”
At his statement Aurora gazed at him incredulously. “Wait, you’ve got to be kidding me. It took all the compassion they could muster to give you Alcadan’s spell books. Despite the fact that Alcadan was your father and that they now know who you truly are, the mages still seem to hate your guts. I thought you had lost it when you wanted to bring Brittany back to life, but trying to get the secrets from the mages; now I know you’ve lost it!”
Kiba shook his head slowly, silencing anything else that Aurora was going to say. Shadow could tell that Alex was about to reprimand Aurora for her outburst and quickly came to her aid. “Are you sure there is no other way to obtain this information? What if you could find some of Scion’s spell books. Surely then you would be able to read his notes and figure out the secrets. If you were able to find a way to nullify the effects of Alcadan’s most powerful subjugation spell, then you should be able to decode any of Scion’s secrets.”
“That’s just it. Scion was the last of the masters of necromancy. All the other necromancers were killed during the purging. The necromancers were one of the main forces behind the group that tried to stir an uprising before the great war. I wiped out all known necromancers and destroyed their lairs and any notes they might of had. Scion was the only one who escaped my wrath, and that was only because I did not know of him at the time. Even then after the great war there was no none recording of any journals or spell books he might have. That taken into account, I find it highly unlikely that he wouldn’t have some record of his works. I believe he might have hidden his works either somewhere within the confides of the mage’s realm, or one of the mages might know something about necromancy.”
“It’s a shot in the dark lad. Are you sure you want to go through with it?”
“I don’t have a choice. I can’t live without her Kiba. Either I’ll bring her back, or I’ll find her in the after life,” Alex declared in an ominous tone.
“What will you do if you can’t find any information about necromancy? Please don’t tell me you would honestly wish for death just so you could see her again,” Shadow asked hesitantly.
Alex sighed and shook his head, unsure of how to answer Shadow’s question. “To be honest, I’m not sure what I would do. I can’t live without her, that I know. Still, there just has to be a way for me to bring her back.”
“What is there’s not? What then will you do? You’ve got to think this through lad. If you can’t find any way to bring her back, what will you do? If you give up on life, you’ll only be desecrating the lass’s memory.”
“What would you have me do then!” Alex yelled. It was apparent that Alex’s last resolves were slowly faltering as his eyes began to water. His breathing was strained and it seemed as if the finality of Brittany’s death was finally affecting him. Alex covered his eyes with his right hand and shook his head softly. “Maybe, maybe you are right. Maybe I am foolish for giving myself hope. She was all I had, she was my life. Allow me this one request, that is all I ask.”
Alex waited for someone to say something. He waited for someone to stop him. Much to his surprise everyone was silent as they waited for his words. Alex took a deep breath before continuing. “I want to talk to the mages. At the very least to put my heart and mind at rest. If they can offer me nothing in regards to necromancy, then I will have no choice but to give up. My heart won’t let me rest as long as there is a chance that I could bring her back. Until I am certain that there is nothing I can do, I won’t be able to admit to myself that she is gone. Please, stand by me just long enough for me to find that out. Afterwards, you can do whatever you please, but please, just stand by me a little longer.”
The three wolves exchanged glances. Each one wondering what the other was thinking. Each one instantly knew what their answer would be the moment their eyes connected. For one silent moment Alex held his breath as he waited for their reply. The wolf demons turned their heads back towards him and nodded slowly. It was Kiba who spoke on their behalf.
“Aye, we will stand by you lad. Still, I won’t lie to you, Brittany was like a daughter to me, so what I am about to tell you is not something I enjoy. If you do find a way to bring the lass back, then by all means bring her back. But lad, if the price to bring Brittany back to life comes at the cost of others lives, we will have no part in it. I cannot in good conscience allow you to take the life of others so that one might live.”
Shadow and Aurora nodded in agreement as they looked at Alex, waiting to see what he would do. Alex sighed and nodded slowly. “I wouldn’t ask you to help me if it meant going against your morals. I am just glad that you will remain here for now.”
“Alex, we will stay by your side to make sure you don’t do something stupid. Brittany would want me to make sure that I keep you in line. So I’m doing this more for her sake than for yours. You could call it her final wishes,” Aurora explained.
Aurora instantly regretted her words as she saw Alex’s facial expression grow darker. Both Shadow and Kiba glared daggers at her as they tried to think of something to lighten Alex’s mood. Before anyone could speak and rectify Aurora’s mistake, Alex broke the silence. “Kiba, did she say anything before she died? Did she...did she say anything about me?”
All eyes were fixed on Kiba as he bowed his head slowly. His voice was full of regret as he informed Alex of Brittany’s last moment. “I am truly sorry lad. It happened so quickly, the lass didn’t have time to say anything. She was in too much pain, but I know her last thoughts were of you.”
Alex’s eyes flashed with anger before darkening at the thoughts of what Kiba portrayed. Alex’s words were barely above a whisper as he spoke. “If you don’t mind...I would like to be alone.”
“Lad, don’t lock yourself back up with the lass. It will only make things harder if you do.” Kiba pleaded.
Alex turned his back to them and walked towards one of the full length windows that adorned the hallway. Alex rested his head against the pane and pressed his hand onto the smooth glass. Alex could feel the icy wind from outside pressing against the glass. Even though his hand was against it for only a moment, he could already feel the bitter cold seeping into his skin. “No, I won’t lock myself up with her. To be honest, I’m afraid if I see her again I won’t be able to break myself apart from her.”
Alex turned around to face the wolf demons. His eyes were blurred by unshed tears, tears that were held back by the last bit of resolve Alex had. The demons knew that Alex didn’t want to shed any tears in front of them. Alex’s voice was cracking with emotion as he spoke, causing the three demons to force back their own tears which were steadily forming. “In all my life, I’ve never met anyone like her. Someone who has every right to harbor so much hate and pain, yet had a heart full of love. I had no right to love her, I had no right to take her as my own. Yet, despite all logic, she fell in love with me. She fell in love with a monster that didn’t deserve love. Someone who has done no wrong, someone who’s only wish was to see people smile, has paid a price for loving a devil. I should be the one to perish, not her. Why...why did she have to die? She did nothing wrong, I am the one that deserved to die, not her! The only crime she ever committed was loving a devil. So why...why was she taken away from me?”
Even as Alex said this, he fell to his knees with tears streaming down his face. The three demons glanced at each other with watery eyes before Kiba motioned to them. “It’s getting late. I will stay with him. You two go on to bed.”
“Kiba, we can’t leave him like this,” Shadow whispered.
“Besides, do you really think we would be able to sleep after all that’s happened?” Aurora asked in a strained voice. Aurora glanced back over at Alex, expecting to see tears falling from his eyes. Instead, Alex seemed to have turned his sadness inward so that no one could tell he was actually sad. Alex is strong, far stronger than most people actually give him credit for. He’s never once cried in front of anyone despite the fact that out of all of us, he’s the one feeling the most pain. He’s always been strong, not just physically but emotionally as well. It’s no wonder he made such a great Lord.
Before Kiba could reply, Alex was back on his feet and trying to regain his composure. “No, all of you need to get some sleep. Tomorrow will come sooner than you want it to, and with it, rides my hopes of bringing Brittany back.”
Kiba sighed, instantly knowing what Alex meant. “So, are you going to contact the mages tonight?”
“Yes, tomorrow I will find the answers I am looking for.”
