Fan Fiction ❯ Trancending Death ❯ Masked Demon ( Chapter 22 )
[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
Baou made his way towards Alex’s castle. He knew that he should’ve come sooner, but his duties to his men had kept him from doing so. Even now he was on a mission, but he figured that he could spare sometime to visit and check up on everyone. Baou stood atop a hillside, and watched as the sun began to rise in the sky.
Damn, I missed the sunrise. We’ve been stuck in that damn forest and hills so long I couldn’t even tell when the sun would come up. I didn’t miss it by long though. That sucks, if we’d hurried up and gotten here maybe a half and hour earlier I could’ve seen it from atop this hill. Still, we did need that water break. Besides, sunrises are all the same I guess.
He shielded his eyes from the sun so that he could see what all was up ahead. He heard Yaza and Scriar coming up behind him.
“The mountain path should be across those plains. Once we reach the castle we can double back and come up through the forest,” Baou said. He pointed to the place he was talking about so that both his companions could see.
“Sounds good to me. Still, we had better hurry and check up on Alex and the others. If that Cult kills anyone while we’re at Alex’s, the commander will have our heads,” Yaza stated. He wiped the sweat off of his face before drinking some water from his canteen. All of them were weary from their trip. They had been training soldiers for the past three months, and the moment they were finally done they were given this assignment.
“Yeah, the commander’s not one who tolerates any transgression from his soldiers,” Scriar agreed.
Baou thought of their new commander. The white lion who had once served under Zanatos, was now the commander of the realms armies. Alex had chosen him because of the fact that he was a good commander. He was strict, and he was quick to punish those who were wrong. Still, he was just about his actions and he was fair with his punishments. Despite the fact that he felt that he should’ve been given the position, he knew that in the end that Alex had made a wise choice.
“Raion maybe a stickler for the rules, but he’s an okay guy. When he’s not being an asshole that is,” Baou replied with a smirk. “We won’t be delayed long. I just want to pay my respects is all. Alex and Brittany deserve that much. Hell, Scion would probably having us all wearing collars and doing dances for him if they hadn’t stopped him.”
“True, we are in debt to him that’s for sure. You said the mountainside is over there, do you know where the entrance is? It’s supposed to be concealed by magic or something. Is there anything that will lead us to the entrance?”
“Yeah, supposedly there’s a stone marking with the symbol of Scion engraved onto. We find that, we find the entrance,” Baou replied. He noticed Yaza staring intently at the mountainside. When Baou turned to look in that direction he quickly realized what Yaza was looking at. There, walking out of the forest, was a man clad all in black. His face was covered with a black wrap and he carried a bag over his shoulder.
All three of the demons exchanged glances, each one knowing what the other was thinking. “Well now, maybe we’ll be able to spend more time at Alex’s than we first thought. Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Raion tell us that the leader of the Cult of Rajah wore a black face wrap and dressed in clothes of an assassin?”
“Well, there’s only one way to find out,” Yaza said. He was already drawing his sword and preparing for battle. Scriar drew his axe, and Baou readied his spear.
“Let’s go have a chat with him then,” Baou said. He spread his wings and launched himself into the air. The moment he reached his peak, he rocketed back towards the ground. He then glided close the ground as he speeded towards the form of the masked man.
Alex felt the demonic energies of the three demons. At one time he would’ve been relieved to see them, maybe even overjoyed. Now, however, he was annoyed at their presence. Alex sat his bag down and watched as they descended upon him.
Great, now if I get into a fight with them they might realize who I am. If I don’t fight back however, they’ll try to capture me. No doubt they think I’m that poor excuse for a demon Senka. I’d better think of something fast to cover my tracks, Alex thought. He was expecting them to halt and ask who he was, instead they continued charging towards him with their weapons drawn.
Okay, change of plans. Save the talking for later. Right now their mind settings are kill now ask questions later. Great, so now I have to kick their ass’s, while suppressing my demonic energy. Someone has it out for me, I just know they do.
Baou was the first one to reach him out of the trio. Even though Baou was unparalleled in the spear, Alex already had all his moves committed to memory. Even before he saw Baou slip his left hand down to the bottom his spear, preparing to thrust it at Alex, he knew that Baou’s move would be a fast thrust to his left shoulder.
Alex waited until Baou put all his force into is thrust, the moment he did Alex quickly sidestepped to the right and let the spear graze his shoulder. Alex knew that this attack left Baou unguarded and off balance. Alex grabbed Baou’s spear with his left hand and placed the palm of his right hand on Baou’s stomach. He then proceeded to use Baou’s own spear and momentum against him as he effortlessly launched him into the air.
Even then Alex didn’t have but a second to spare until Yaza was upon him. Alex spun Baou’s spear around and caught it in his right hand. Yaza swung his spiked sword at Alex’s head, but once again Alex was prepared for this attack. The moment Yaza launched his attack, Alex launched his own counterattack. Alex swung the top his spear downward, allowing it to connect with the back of Yaza’s blade. Alex then forced Yaza’s blade towards the ground, once there was no way it could hit him, Alex twisted the spear around and twirled it around his head. Alex ducked as the spear twirled above his head, but the unprepared Yaza caught the blunt end of the spear right in the face. Yaza too went flying backwards from the impact of Alex’s attack.
Once again, Alex didn’t have to wait long until Scriar was upon him. Alex dodged Scriar’s first attack which cracked the ground with the sheer force of it.
Shit, won’t be able to take him on with this spear. He’d shatter it and me along with it if I let him get in too close. Better use my head on this one, Alex thought.
Scriar swung at Alex again, this time striking from the side. He reared back for another one which gave Alex an idea.
Note to self, if I fuck this up I’m going to be royally fucked, Alex dryly thought. Well, it worked in a movie I saw back when I was in the human realm. I’m pretty sure there’s a lesson about taking advice from movies, but Hell, let’s see them come up with something when they’ve got a minotaur trying to decapitate them with a damn axe!
Alex had to move quickly for his plan to work. He stabbed the bladed part of his spear into the ground, and quickly grabbed hold of the top of it with his left hand. He pulled himself up to the top of the spear, to where he was both sitting and standing on top of it. The moment Scriar’s axe came near hitting it however, Alex quickly flipped off of it. Alex’s hands still grasped the bottom of the spear, so when he flipped, the spear went with him. Scriar’s axe hit nothing but air as Alex brought the spear around from behind him in midair. The spear collided with Scriar’s skull causing a loud cracking sound. Scriar collapsed to the ground in a heap of dust.
Shit, I hope I didn’t kill him.
Alex heard the flapping of wings coming from behind him. He turned around just in time to have Baou connect with him full force, shoving Alex back into the cliff side. Alex’s back broke the stone around him from the sheer force of Baou’s attack. Both demons held on tightly to Baou’s spear, neither one wanting to relinquish control to the other. Alex knew that he could easily overpower Baou, but once again he didn’t want to have to reveal himself to them. Doing that would be like putting himself in front of the firing squad.
“I’ll admit you are more skilled than I would’ve thought for some two-bit assassin. Still, there’s no way in Hell with a demonic aura as weak as yours, that you’d ever be able to defeat me!” Baou spat.
Same old Baou, that’s for sure, Alex thought as he tried to push against Baou’s strength.
“I’m not who you think I am! You have me mistaken for someone else,” Alex said. He pretended to be struggling to hold Baou off, even though in reality he wasn’t trying at all.
“Right, so you just wear that mask as a fashion statement I take it?” Baou countered with a smirk.
God to I hate him! If I’m stuck fighting dumb, dumb, and dumber here, then I’ll never be able to make it to the village in time. I’ve got to end this, but I’ve got to do it without hurting them. No matter what, they still are my friends.
Suddenly a picture of Brittany flashed in Alex’s head. As did her words to him. “Don’t forget me Alex. Remember, do this, and we will be together soon.”
“Fuck this!” Alex roared as he finally allowed himself to use some of his strength. He threw Baou off of him, allowing Baou to have his spear back at the same time.
“You just fucked up big time!” Baou shouted. He flipped his spear over so that the blade was pointing towards Alex. He held the spear like a javelin as he began pouring some of his demonic energy into it. Energy began crackling all around the spear, it too began pulsating with demonic energy.
“Fuck, don’t tell me he’s going to use that attack,” Alex muttered.
“Now you’ll die!” Baou yelled.
“Fuck, he’s using that attack!”
Baou didn’t hesitate to launch his spear at Alex who was still pinned by the cliff side. Since the spear was filled with demonic energy it flew threw the air like a lightning bolt. Alex barely had time to make a decision about what to do before the spear collided with him.
The spear stopped inches away from Alex’s out stretched hands. Both Alex’s and Baou’s demonic energies clashed as Alex shielded himself from the attack. The look of concentration on Alex’s face came not from worrying about deflecting Baou’s attack, but from not using any more energy than what was required to do it. If he lost control over his energy and forgot to suppress it for even a second, they would realize who he really was.
After a few seconds of struggling with it, Alex finally managed to deflect Baou’s spear. Baou caught his spear with one hand as it flew threw the air. The look of shock on his face was priceless as he stared at Alex. Alex could tell by Baou’s voice as he spoke, that he was much more willing to listen to Alex now, than he was before.
“Fine then, I know for a fact that the leader of the Cult of Rajah could not have enough power to deflect that attack. Still, you wear his head wrapping, do you not?”
“Yes, I do.”
“Then where is the real leader? Where are his guards? Surely if you work for the leader, or if you are the new leader, they would be out here coming to your aid.”
“If it is the Cult of Rajah you are looking for then go search in the cave to east of the mountainside. You came too late if you wanted to find them alive. I just killed them all. The Cult of Rajah is no more.”
Once again Baou’s eyes were filled with shock. He couldn’t believe that one demon, no matter how strong he was, was able to take on all of the Cult of Rajah. “Just who are you to take on the Cult of Rajah and return alive without so much as one scratch on you?”
“I am nothing more than a humble servant to the Demon Lord. I am an assassin by trade, one who once served under the Lord. The Cult of Rajah, and its members, were no match for the skill of a servant of the Demon Lord. Had I known you were coming I would’ve left them to you,” Alex said. He bowed slightly in regards to Baou’s position of authority.
When Alex bowed, Baou caught sight of something dangling around his neck. When Baou saw this he felt his heart stop cold. Alex noticed that something in the way Baou looked at him had changed. Still, he hoped that Baou would not recognize him or ask further questions.
I’ve become one Hell of a liar in my time. Not too mention one Hell of a smooth talker. Playing on Baou’s ego is the easiest way for me to get past him without further conflict.
Baou thought about what Alex had said for a moment. He gazed at Alex more intently and asked him another question. “If you are a servant of the Demon Lord, why do you now wear their leader’s mask?”
“Because, I like to keep a trophy of my kills. The leader of the Cult of Rajah is famous for his mask. Besides, if people knew my face then it would be hard to get around unnoticed, wouldn’t you think? It is best to keep my identity secret so that I can better conduct my business.”
It’s not a complete lie. With this mask I won’t have to deal with anyone trying to stop me. To them I’ll be nothing more than another vagabond.
Baou finally seemed to accept Alex’s answer. He nodded and looked towards the forms of Yaza and Scriar. Both were still shaken from the blows they had received, but Alex was relieved to see that he hadn’t hurt them badly.
“I am sorry for the misunderstanding. We will go check to see for ourselves what has become of the Cult of Rajah. Know this, if you are lying, we will hunt you down and make sure you pay for your lies. Where are you traveling to?”
“I am making my way towards the Central Realm. There is some business there that I must attend to.”
Baou nodded and replied.”If you are telling the truth, may you have safe travel to wherever your journey leads you.”
Alex nodded politely and began to head back towards his bag. When he picked it up he turned and waved towards Baou. “You too, I hope next time we meet it will be under better circumstances.”
“As do I,” Baou replied. Once Alex had disappeared from sight Baou turned to Yaza and Scriar. Both of which were wondering why he had let him go. Before they could ask Baou answered their questions. “We had better hurry to check out the truth of this man’s words. After which, I believe we need to check on the condition over at Alex’s castle.”
“Why is that?” Scriar asked.
“Because, even though I’m not sure, I’m almost positive that man was wearing the necklace that the Archmage created for Alex. The same necklace that Alex gave to Brittany. That man knew all of our moves and defeated us with ease. Only one man could do that, and only one man would wear that necklace. Also, only one man could have eyes that seemed like the eyes of the Devil himself. In short, that man we just encountered, that man was Alex.”
Author's Note: Okay, first off before I forget again. I'm sure you guys are wondering how a simple mask could hide the fact of who Alex is. First you have to take into account that he is suppressing all of his demonic aura, using only what little bits are necessary. Second off, he is concealing his hair and his eye color, not too mention the clothes he is wearing look like that of a peasants. But also not this, the change in Alex's whole demeanor is so great, that no one truly wants to believe that the man before them could possibly be Alex. Both his demeanor and his psychological well being, begin to deteriorate as the story progresses, as you will see in later chapters. ANYway, I think that's about enough of out me. So take care, hope you enjoyed the chapter. Catch ya later.
