Fan Fiction ❯ Trancending Death ❯ Only A Pawn ( Chapter 28 )

Baou actually smiled at Rire’s words. A solemn pact was made between the two, even though no more words were exchanged. Each one knew what the other had to. Each one knew now that their cause was worth dying for. With that, both warriors darted back towards the forest. They sped through it at blinding speeds.
Alex, I’m not sure whether or not I really want to stop you either. Something doesn’t seem right. I don’t know what it is, but something just doesn’t add up. Maybe that’s why I want to talk to you. I want to see for myself, maybe that way I can decide for myself what I want to do. Either way, I’ll be seeing you soon, Baou thought as he broke out of the forest and started running through a meadow.

Lucia stared toward the sky. He closed his eyes and breathed deeply. His thoughts were not pleasant ones, nor were they ones that he wanted to dwell upon. Yet, try as he might, he couldn’t rid himself of the dark thoughts that plagued his mind.
I should be condemned for my actions. The darkness, the pain, and the sorrow are slowly consuming him. I wonder now if my actions were indeed for the greater good. Maybe I was wrong in leading him down this path, but at the same time the darkness that is consuming him is a necessary evil. Just as when a fire is started, you must start another fire to defeat it, only the power of a Devil can defeat another Devil. I must awaken the Devil within him through suffering and turmoil. My deeds are ones that should condemn me for all eternity, turning a man into a Devil. Yet, I still hope that my plans will work out. It is evident that he is far smarter than I had originally predicted. Even with me influencing Alex’s actions, he used that to his benefit. He’s turned the entire realm against him. That was something I had not anticipated. Still, I hope that my original plans will succeed. If so, then I might have some hope for redemption of my sins. If he can awaken his true power, and harness the power of the Devil within you, then and only then, will you find what you are searching for. Only a Devil can kill another Devil.
“What’s wrong? You look like something’s bothering you,” Brittany said with interest.
Lucia turned around to see Brittany standing behind him. Even though she was smiling, he could tell that something was bothering her as well.
“My problems are nothing to worry about my dear. Even so, it seems that I could ask you the same thing. Have you had another dream?”
Brittany shook her head, but still Lucia could tell that something was bothering her. He didn’t know why she didn’t want to tell him, but he also knew that he needed to know. “Come on, I know that something’s wrong Britt. You know you can tell me.”
Brittany froze at Lucia’s words. Something about them made her blood run cold and her mind to flash with images.
Why do I feel this way? I’ve heard someone say that before, someone who I think was very close to. Once again I saw the man from my dreams. This time however, he was smiling and happy. There seemed to be something about him, a light and a warmth that draws me towards him. I can barely believe that this man is the man from my dreams. What has happened to him for him to change like this? That man lost his happiness and filled that void with darkness. Is what he lost, really that valuable to him?
“Brittany?” Lucia asked again. He had called her once already but had received no response. This time he called a little louder.
Brittany snapped out of her thoughts and looked at him. “Sorry, I was just thinking. The man from my dreams is real. I know him, or I knew him. Lucia, do you know what happened to him to make him so sad? I know you know who he is, and I know you know about my past. Why won’t you tell me anything about it? What did he lose? Is it what he lost, that is causing him so much sadness that his soul cries because he can’t?”
Brittany’s words hit Lucia like a sledge hammer. Tears began to form around the corners of her eyes, and Lucia knew that if he didn’t stop this now, that he wouldn’t be able to deny Brittany of her requests and tell her everything that she desired to know. He moved toward her and wiped the tears from her eyes. “Shh, shh, don’t cry Brittany.”
The moment that Lucia’s hand connected with Brittany’s skin, it was as if a surge of electricity was sent coursing through his body. An image flashed before his eyes. That image alone caused him to quickly pull his hand away from Brittany and to back up. He quickly brought his hand to his heart to ensure that it was still there. He felt the frantic beating of his heart beneath his hand, it was only when he breathed a sigh of relief that he realized he had been holding his breath.
Brittany looked at him with surprise. Her voice was still a little shaky and her cheeks were still wet with tears, but despite the emotions that were overwhelming her, she seemed more concerned about Lucia than for herself. “Are you okay? What’s wrong? You look as pale as death.”
At first Lucia couldn’t find any words to say to her. His mouth moved, but no words came out. When he finally managed to speak again, he could still feel on overwhelming sense of terror. “Nothing, I was just thinking about something.”
“Thinking about what?”
“Whether or not I might have made a mistake,” Lucia replied softly. He turned away fro Brittany and continued. “A Devil becomes a Lord, a Lord became a lover, a lover loses his love and thus awakens the Devil within him. Now a Devil is trying to become a God.”
Lucia then turned and smiled at Brittany, who was obviously confused by the sudden change that had occurred within Lucia. He slowly reached up and placed his hand on her shoulder, more to confirm something than to comfort her. Just as he predicted, there was no shock, nor was there any image that flashed in front of him.
“Lucia?” Brittany asked with uncertainty.
“Brittany, ht man in your dreams, remember him how he was, not how you see him now,” Lucia said solemnly.
“What do you mean? Besides, I can’t remember him how he was! I can’t remember anything. I can only see that he used to be happy.”
“Still, when the time comes and you do remember your memories, do not hold him at fault. His actions are not all of his own.”
“What do you mean? In my dreams, it is him who let himself and his heart fall to darkness. It is him who is letting his heart and soul die, so that he won’t have to feel any pain!” Brittany yelled. This time se couldn’t stop the tears that flowed from her cheek. She didn’t know why she was crying. Nor did she know or understand why it hurt so much to see this man as he was now.
Lucia wanted to comfort er. He wanted to end her tears, but he knew only one man would be able to do that. “Do not be sad, this man is being consumed by darkness, but that is necessary for him to do something that only he can do. He chose his pat, but it was not without some guidance. Brittany, in answer to one of your questions, I cannot tell you about your past because you need to figure that out for yourself. There will come a time wen everything comes rushing back to you, and in tat time you will ate both that man and me.”
“Why would I do that?” Brittany asked, desperately trying to end the flood of tears that streamed down her face.
“You will hate him for succumbing to the darkness, and you will hate me for leading him down this pat. For without me, he would’ve never started on it in the first place.”
“Why are you saying this? Why are saying this, Lucia?” Brittany asked through tears. She didn’t understand why he was acting like this. She couldn’t understand why he was no longer smiling. She couldn’t understand why Lucia suddenly seemed so sad, or why she too, suddenly felt sad as well. It was as if just thinking about the man from er dreams and of what he had become, made her want to cry harder.
“I am telling you this, to try and rectify some of my deeds. You see, in some essence, I am just as much a fiend and a Devil, as the man in your dreams. We are both plagued by te evil in our hearts. We are both plagued by the deeds we are committing, knowing that our actions will result in hurting others. I am the parallel to the man in your dreams. I guess I shouldn’t hope to release my self of this burden. It would be unfair for me to feel nothing, while his soul is being tortured for the crimes he is committing. In the end, I will only be forgiven if everything works out, and then his deeds shall be redeemed only when he finally finds what he is searching for.”
