Once again Lucia’s words caused Brittany to pause before speaking. The more he spoke, the less she understood. Her voice was small and soft. She was no longer sobbing, but still silent tears fell from her cheeks. “Lucia, tell me why I would hate you. Give me a straight answer instead of riddles. Tell me why I am crying for this man. Tell me why my heart breaks when I see his suffering. Tell me, is what he is searching for, really worth all this pain and suffering.”
Lucia sighed and looked at Brittany. His normal bright and cheerful face now seemed aged well beyond his years as he looked at her. Suddenly Lucia started laughing, which caused Brittany to jump in surprise at his sudden outburst. His laughter soon died down to a soft chuckle. His face seemed to take on a more cheerful appearance, but still there was a darkness clouding his features. “You still don’t get it, do you? I cannot answer all your questions, but I will try to ease some of your fears. First off, the reason you will hate me, the reason I hate myself, is because I am the reason the man in your dreams is succumbing to darkness. I am the one who set him down this path. Without my intervention he would never have begun this journey. That’s why I am his parallel. Without me, the darkness in his heart would never have return. Just as without his deeds, I would not feel sadness for what I have done. I have made him what he is. To put it simply, he is doing what he is, because of me.”
Brittany’s eyes widened in shock. Whatever she had been expecting Lucia to tell her, this was not it. She shook her head in disbelief as she stared at Lucia. “Lucia, how, how could you do that? How could you have sold this man’s soul to the darkness?”
“Do not get me wrong. This man sold his soul on his own accord. He knows what he is doing. I did not sell his soul for him, but I knew that by going down the path that he has chosen, he would have to call upon the powers of the darkness to grant him the power he desires. “
”Still, you are the reason he started this! All this pain and suffering he is enduring is because of you!”
“No, all the pain and suffering he feels is because of you,” Lucia retorted. He mentally cursed himself for saying what he had.
Brittany’s expression changed as his words sunk in. “What do you mean? How is it my fault?”
“I cannot tell you. Forget I even said it. I have already said more than I was supposed to. “
”How in the Hell do you expect me to forget this? You must be crazy if you think I’m just going to ignore the fact that you just told me this man is becoming a monster because of me!”
“Listen, I cannot tell you anymore, so please don’t press this matter further. You have to discover the answers on your own terms, otherwise everything this man is doing will be for nothing.”
Something in the way Lucia looked at her, something in the way he spoke, cause Brittany to think twice about pressing him for further answers. Still, she wasn’t about to let him get away without telling her anything.
“Then tell me this. Tell me why you did what you did. Tell me why in the Hell you did something like this. I know this is not something that you would do, Lucia. You wouldn’t condemn someone to a fate worse than death. So tell me, why did you lead him to his ruin?”
Lucia was stunned by Brittany’s sudden bravado. He was so taken back, that for a second he was speechless. “How do you know that this is something that I wouldn’t do? You have barely known me but for a few days.”
“Because you remind me of someone. You remind me of someone that I used to know better than I knew myself. Every time I look at you, every time I hear you voice I see someone else. I can feel a name on the tip of my tongue, but I can never remember it. That is why I want to be with you so much, because you remind me of someone that evidently meant a lot to me. It is because of that, that I know you wouldn’t do this unless you had a good cause. Because the person you remind me of, would never succumb to darkness unless they had a good reason.”
Lucia looked at Brittany in a different way after he grasped the meaning of her words. He couldn’t believe how close she had come to the truth. Just barely grazing on the dark secret that lied deeper in. For a moment, he thought she might have fully recovered her memories. “You are right. I do have a reason for my actions. There is an evil within the Demon Realm. An Evil that mus be destroyed. It is unfortunate, but only that man has the power to stop it. For him to acquire the power necessary to do this, he must sell his soul to the darkness and let it consume him.”
“So you’re just using him? That’s all he is to you, is something that you can use to do your dirty work! He’s not some damn puppet! He has a heart and a soul that the darkness has not yet fully corrupted. So don’t treat him like he’s some heartless thing that you can use and then forget about. What exactly is he to you anyway?”
“What is he to you? From the way it sounds you care an awful lot about someone who you can’t even remember.”
Lucia’s question caused Brittany’s anger to falter. Why did she care so much about him? Why was she arguing and getting mad at someone who had only showed her kindness? She didn’t even remember the man, she didn’t even know his face. It didn’t make any sense but something within her would not let her sit by and watch as this man killed himself, doing tasks for these people, that he had knew nothing about.
“Lucia, come. Zanatos wants to speak with you,” announced a man who was cloaked in white, as he approached the two.
“Fine, I’ll be right there,” Lucia replied, angry at the intrusion.
“You will come now,” the man snapped.
Lucia glared at the man with rage, but knew that there was little point in arguing about it. He turned back to Brittany, who was no longer as mad as she had been, but she was still angry with him. “That man is more than I or anyone else could imagine. There are only two people who know his full potential. Only he himself, and you, know of the power that lies dormant within him. True, he is being used to fulfill our goals, but he would’ve never given into the temptation of the darkness if he hadn’t had his own reasons. To answer your final question Brittany. The thing that he lost, it meant more than life itself to him. He loved it with his heart and soul. When it vanished, he lost both of them. That is why he is willing to let the darkness consume him. Because only when he finds what he is searching for, will he ever be able to truly be happy again. Brittany, the thing that this man is searching for, the thing that he is willing to die for, the thing that he would sell his very soul to the darkness to get back, is you.”
Lucia turned and walked away from Brittany before she could recover from the shock of what he had just revealed to her. She tried to call out to him, but she couldn’t. Her mind was still reeling from what he had just told her.
This man, he is searching for me? He is doing all this, for me? Why? Why would he do this? It doesn’t make any sense! Why would someone be willing to sacrifice their life and their humanity just to find me? Were we really that close, that he would do this for me? Why can’t I remember him if we were so close? Why can’t I see his face and recognize him?
It was then that a faded memory started to come back to her. It was hazy at first, but soon it became clear as day. Brittany couldn’t remember much, but she did remember something. Suddenly Brittany brought her hand up to her chest, as a new sensation coursed through her body. It was a feeling she hadn’t experienced since she had arrived in this place, but now that she felt it once more, she remembered it instantly. An emotional pain took hold of her, and Brittany realized that it was the pain of loss. Brittany couldn’t believe what she was feeling, she couldn’t believe that she could forget this feeling. She didn’t know why she had, but she didn’t care. All that was important to her, was the fact that she now remembered it.
“I loved him. He loved me. That is why he is doing this. He is doing it, because he can’t bare to live without me,” Brittany said softly. “Why, if he loved me, why would he do this? If I loved him, and he loved me, why would he do something as terrible as this? He should know that regardless of how much we want to be together, the price is far too great. We can’t be together at the cost of other’s lives. Not if it means that innocent people will have to die in the process. So what on earth would possess you to do this?”
