Both the demons silently pondered what Brittany had told them. Neither one could claim that what she was telling them wasn’t the truth. For neither one of them could possibly know what she could or couldn’t feel. The two demons glanced at each other slightly. Each conveying their thoughts by the look in their eyes. Finally Aurora nodded slowly and Shadow followed suite. They then turned back to Brittany.
“Seeing as how you know more about this than we do. What do you suggest that we do?”
Brittany took a deep breath and closed her eyes. “Tell the Eastern Realm forces about Baou and Rire’s death. Tell them to go ahead and move out. That’s the only way you’ll reach the Central Realm in time. Time is of the essence, so make haste in doing this. I’m afraid that at this point, there will be no talking Alex out of this. You must...you must kill him. Please, do ti for your child. Do it so that you won’t suffer the same fate as we have,” Brittany pleaded. Tears rolled down her cheeks and neither Shadow or Aurora could say anything as they watched her.
Aurora moved closer to Shadow, who draped his arm around her and whispered softly. “She’s right. Let’s go ahead and hurry to the Eastern Realm. The sooner the better.”
Aurora nodded and looked to Brittany. “We’ll do our best, I promise.”
Brittany nodded and wiped the tears from her life. “Please be careful.”
“We will,” Aurora promised. Both her and Shadow quickly turned back toward the path they had previously been traveling upon. Both gave one final glance back at Brittany, before quickly setting out on the path, moving at a hurried pace.
Brittany smiled as she watched them run. It wasn’t a sad smile, or a smile that beamed with hope for the future. It was a smile that came from watching her plans unfold perfectly. “I have the castle, I have the pawns, and I have the queen. Soon I shall have the knights. All I will have left to get is the rook and the king. Then the fun can really begin.”
Brittany’s smile never faded as she turned her back toward the quickly disappearing forms of the demons. She then started walking deeper into the woods, before finally disappearing from sight.
The two demons ran in complete silence. The woods began to thin and started to give way to wide open plains. They each knew that this was a sure sign that they were nearing the borders of the Eastern Realm.
“So what do you think about all this?” Shadow asked as they ran.
“Think about what?”
“About what Brittany said. I mean, everything she said did make some sense, but at the same time there was just something about the way she acted that struck me as odd. I can’t really explain it though.
“Shadow, she is dead. Her soul is trapped here because of a magic necklace; and now she is being forced to watch as the love of her life goes all psycho killer, and she can’t do anything about it. She can see him, but he can’t see her and he can’t even here her. All she can do is stand by and watch as the love of her life falls into darkness and becomes a monster on an unholy crusade to try and bring her and their child back to life. Do you even know what she must be going through? Could you honestly even begin to try and imagine what she must be feeling right now? With all she’s gone through and all she’s going through, I think she has every right to act a little odd. Hell Shadow, she just told us that we have to kill Alex! Do you know what that must’ve done to her?”
Shadow sighed and shook his head. She’s right. Damn her, she’s right. I know she is. I’m still just looking for a reason not to fight Alex. I really don’t want to betray his trust as so many have done before me. The fact remains that despite the fact that I don’t want to do this, Alex had brought this upon himself. Brittany had said that to save our child, we must kill Alex. If she was willing to sacrifice his life, the life of her lover and her mate, just so my child would have the chance to live; I should be willing to sacrifice the life of my friend to save the life of my child.”
An image flashed before Shadow’s eyes and once again he felt unsure of his convictions. Kiba, what would you do now? What would you do if you were in my position? Even now your faith in Alex, surpasses anything I have ever seen. Even when Alex doesn’t know who he is, you are still unable to raise your hand against him, because in your heart you desperately want to believe that he will return to how he was. You still have faith that in the end, he will do the right thing. I wish I had your faith, Kiba. But the truth is, is that I can’t stand by and let Alex do this, not if it means sacrificing my child and my mate to do so. I’m sorry Kiba, but I must fight him. I must put and end to all this madness. If it is necessary, I must kill Alex.
“Shadow, quit daydreaming and watch out!” Aurora yelled suddenly.
Shadow looked up in time to see Aurora jump out in front of him and slash at several arrows that had been heading his way.
“What the Hell? What’s going on?” Shadow asked. Before he could get his reply, he dodged several more arrows that were launched at him, as well as slashing at two that came a little too close for comfort.
“I don’t have a clue. All I know is, is someone has pretty bad aim,” Aurora replied. Even as she said this she turned around and just barely avoided three arrows that were aimed for her chest.
Shadow appeared by her side holding the three arrows which she had just avoided. He smiled wickedly as he held the arrows up. “Whoever they are, I think they heard you. Get ready.”
Aurora didn’t even have to ask what Shadow meant by that. One look at him could tell you what he was preparing to do. His eyes strained to look through the dense foliage to try and see their unseen adversaries. He silently sniffed the air, trying to find any scent or any indication of where they might be.
“They’re good. They made sure to attack us from downwind. I can’t smell them,” Shadow whispered.
“Don’t worry. When they shoot again, just leave it to me,” Aurora replied. She crouched low to the ground and tensed her leg muscles. She was preparing to lunge at a moments notice.
“There!” Shadow yelled. His eyes widened as he heard the twinging sound of the bows and the whistling sounds of the arrows. He quickly launched the three arrows he was holding straight in front of Aurora. The arrows he threw collided with three more arrows, scattering all six of them in the air. Aurora quickly launched herself at the six arrows, grabbing three in each hand as she spun in the air.
There’s one behind the large oak, another behind the fallen rock formation. The third is hiding a top one of the larger trees to the left. Aurora mentally reminded herself of the locations of her adversaries before preparing her attack. She had waited for Shadow to launch his arrows so that they could both see the trajectory from which the other arrows came. This allowed her to know where the arrows were coming from, and thus allow her to know where her enemies laid in hiding.
As Aurora turned in air, she launched two arrows at the archer hidden behind the large oak. She then quickly passed another arrow into her right hand and launched two more arrows at the archer hiding in the large tree to the right. Before her feet had even hit the ground, she had already started running toward the rock formation. She passed another arrow to her right hand, knowing that she might be running into a trap she wanted to be prepared for anything.
Shadow watched as Aurora spun through the air, effortlessly hitting her ended targets. He knew this because of the screams that filled the air just seconds after she had launched her arrows. He then watched as she charged toward the rock formation, and to where the final archer was lying in wait. It was then that Shadow saw several metallic forms glinting from another rock formation to the east of the one Aurora was running to. The moment Shadow recognized what they were, he quickly ran after Aurora.
Shit, crossbows. Dammit, I wasn’t expecting them to be using those. It’s bad enough they’re using demon bone arrows.... Wait, who would have access to be using these arrows? Fuck! So much for a friendly reception. We’ve probably just walked right into the middle of the Eastern Realm army. That still doesn’t explain however, why in the Hell they are shooting at us, Shadow frantically thought as he ran toward Aurora.
Aurora charged toward the rock formation at full speed. All her senses were at high alert, waiting for the slightest change that would alert her to what was going on. She heard the rustling of leaves coming from behind the formation, which signaled where her target was. Without further hesitation, she launched herself into the air. She flipped over the fallen rocks, at the same time launching the two remaining arrows toward her target. The archer’s screams filled the air as Aurora landed. She started to turn around to see where she hit him, when the whistling sound of something speeding through the air, caught her attention.
Aurora turned back around, just in time to slash down two arrows that had been aimed for her heart. Several more came towards her. Each one she managed to either deflect or destroy. She wasn’t worried about the arrows, those she could handle. The one thing she couldn’t handle, however, were the fifty armed soldiers making their way toward her. One of which, had a spiked trident in his hand and was already charging toward her.
Dammit, I can’t block these arrows and take down that boar demon. Shadow, where in the Hell are you? Aurora thought in a matter of seconds. Her thoughts became more frantic as she saw the boar demon lowering his trident, changing the spot on her body that he was aiming for. Aurora’s eyes widened as she saw him aiming for her stomach instead of her chest. No! Please, not my child. If he hits me there.... I’ve got to do something. I can’t let this happen.
Aurora tried to turn and stop the advance of the charging demon. The moment she turned her attention off of the arrows, however, an arrow stabbed through her right shoulder blade. Aurora screamed in a mixture of pain and rage as she reached for the arrow. She blocked two more, knowing full well that the arrows were nothing more than a distraction to let the others have an open target. Once again Aurora made a silent plea that Shadow would come help her.
