The timid, glowing form of Brittany stood behind a tree looking at the two demons. “I didn’t want to bother you. It seems as if you’ve had a bad enough time since I last left you. I would ask what’s wrong, but somehow I think I already know the answer to that.”
Aurora and Shadow exchanged glances before breaking apart and focusing their attention onto Brittany. “We’re okay, just a little stressed out right now,” Shadow said a tired voice. “Even now, we are trying to make our way toward the Eastern Realm, to join with the Eastern Realm forces to see if we can somehow get in touch with Alex. We know that Alex is the key to undoing all this, we just don’t know how.”
“Why are you going to the Eastern Realm?”
“Baou and the others realized this sooner than us. He had already figured out that it was Alex who was killing the humans. Once he realized it, he left to inform his commander. That is why we are going to the Eastern Realm. An army is amassing to try and hunt Alex down. So we’re going to try and see if we can talk some sense into him.”
Brittany nodded slowly, as if she was contemplating this new news. “I knew of what Baou was doing. That is the reason that I knew I had to come and speak with you.”
“Why, what’s wrong?” Aurora asked. She was becoming increasingly alarmed at Brittany’s ominous tone of voice.
“Baou and Rire went off by themselves to fight Alex. At first, they tried to talk some sense into him, but he wouldn’t listen to anything they said. They fought, and Alex killed them. He killed both Baou and Rire as if they meant nothing to him. He laughed, Aurora! He laughed at them, after he had killed them! What kind of monster laughs after killing his friends?”
“Baou and Rire...are dead?” Aurora asked. She couldn’t believe that either one of them were really dead. Much less the fact that Alex was the one who had spilt their blood and killed them. She turned very pale as the realization began to seep in.
“Yes, Alex killed them when they tried to talk him out of bringing me back to life. Not even his friends could talk him out of it. He said that anyone who stood in his way would meet the same fate. That any who opposed him would find any early grave at his hands.”
“If Baou and Rire couldn’t talk him out if, what chance do we have?” Aurora asked. She turned and looked at Shadow with pleading eyes.
“Then what should we do? If we can’t talk any sense into him, what is the point of even going to the Eastern Realm?” Shadow asked.
“You must kill him,” Brittany replied softly.
Both Aurora and Shadow froze at what Brittany had just said. Neither one of them could believe that she had actually just suggested what she had.
“Don’t look at me like that,” Brittany begged. “Don’t you think I know what I am saying? I know that taking Alex’s life is the only way. I prayed to God that there would be another way, but evidently there’s not. I know what you must be thinking, but don’t you think that there was another way besides this one, I would tell you? I know that I am asking you to end Alex’s life. I know I am asking you to kill my mate, kill my love.... Please, there is no other way. I wouldn’t even suggest this way, but I can’t let Alex continue doing this if it’ll threaten the life of your baby. I love him more than life itself, so maybe this will be for the best in the end. At least we’ll be together then. But I just wish that there was something else that we could do.”
“We know what you are asking, but I’m still not sure why. I know how much Alex means to you, and that is why I find it hard to believe that you are even suggesting this. Still, I know that if you are the one who suggested this, there really must be no other way to go about it,” Shadow said shaking his head sadly. “I can’t even begin to imagine what you must be going through right now. How you must feel, watching what Alex is becoming. Watching him turn into a monster, right before your very eyes. This must be Hell on you, to know that all those innocent live and all those lives that Alex is still going to take, all for you. Knowing that Alex is becoming a monster, just so that he might have a chance to bring you back. Everything that’s happening, is happening because of you. Knowing all this, I wonder how you must feel. In fact, I wonder whether or not you can feel at all.”
“Shadow! How can you be so cruel? You can look at her and tell that she is suffering, and you’re not exactly helping her either. What in the Hell were you thinking, saying all that stuff to her? Have you honestly gone and lost your fucking mind?”
`“No. I was thinking whether or not a specter can feel emotions. I was thinking that if she can communicate with us, why can’t she communicate with Alex? We both know that if she were talk to Alex, then he would stop this madness. No matter what insanity had taken over him he would still listen to her! I also wonder just how in the Hell she is able to appear to us like she has. If she can just appear at will, why isn’t she with Alex right now? But the thing that I’m thinking the most, is how in the Hell you know that Aurora is pregnant!”
Aurora blinked in surprise at what Shadow had just said. Her anger had subsided only due to the fact that she realized that everything Shadow had just said was true. With eyes, Aurora turned to Brittany. “Brittany, how did you know that I was pregnant?”
Brittany looked at them with eyes that showed her torment. The way she looked, so small, frail, and broken, made even Shadow sad for saying what he had to her.
“When you die, you are able to know things that you otherwise shouldn’t know. You see things that you wouldn’t normally be able to see. I’m not sure how I knew you were with child, I just did. Just like I don’t know how I am able to stand here before you now. I think the reason I was able to come back at all, was because of the magical properties of the necklace that Alex gave to me. At least, that’s the only reason I have been able to come up with.”
“If you are still on this earth, if your spirit is still here due to the magic of the necklace; why aren’t you with Alex now? After all, it is his love for you, it is his need to be with you, that drives him to such great lengths to bring you and your child back to life. It is his love for you and the love for your child that he is doing this for. So why do you come to both of us, instead of running to him?”
“Don’t you think that I have tried to talk to him? At first I wouldn’t leave his side, after my death. Just as he would not leave my side. I stood there, waiting and hoping that something would happen; and that by some miracle, he would finally be able to see me. It broke my heart to see him how he was, being able to feel the pain he was going through. Being able to watch and feel as he was in his own personal Hell. I was there when he made the decision to use necromancy to try and bring me and our child back to life. It was then that I realized I had to see if anyone would be able to see me. I knew that I couldn’t just watch as he began a road that I knew would lead to his own damnation. I knew that if I could talk to someone, maybe they could talk some sense into him, for me. I overheard what that mage had said, about you having the ability to be a medium for me. I took a chance and hoped against hope that you would be able to see me. Luckily for me, you were. Even then it was too late though. Even now, as I speak with you, I can still feel the darkness and madness beginning to fully consume him. I am afraid that if you do not hurry and end this quickly, everyone will perish at his hands.”
Both of the demons were deathly quiet as they contemplated what Brittany tod them. Despite all of their previous inhibitions what she told them did make perfect sense. So much so, that even Shadow was now eager to depart so that he might be able to reach the Eastern realm and their forces. Only then would the true quest, really begin.
This time however, it was Aurora who came up with an interjection. “You can still sense what Alex is feeling, even now?”
Both Shadow ans Brittany looked at Aurora with confused expressions. “Yes. The magic of the necklace keeps me connected to Alex for all eternity. Even now I can still sense everything that he is feeling.”
“That’s strange, because before Alex left to go on this damn adventure of his, he told me that he could no longer feel your presence. He said that he could tell when he stopped being able to sense you, mainly because losing that was like losing a part of himself. Losing that slight connecting he had with you, was like losing you all over again.”
Brittany’s eyes widened in surprise at this new information. Her change of expression was slight and quick, but it did not go unnoticed. “How could he not still sense me? I can still sense him and I can still feel what he is feeling. So why can’t he feel me?”
It took Brittany a second or two, to try and think of what might possibly could have happened. It seemed that she had finally figured it out when her face brightened suddenly. “I think I’ve got it!”
“What is it?”
“You said that Alex told you this before he left to go on this quest to bring me and our child back, right?”
“Well, yeah I guess so.”
“That would’ve been around the time that I went off and tried to see if I could find anyone would actually be able to even see me. Maybe that’s why Alex couldn’t feel my presence.”
“Well, if you are here by the power of the necklace and you can still feel his presence, why wouldn’t he be able to sense yours?” Shadow inquired.
“As it is now, I can sense and feel things that I normally couldn’t. Just like I was able to know that Aurora was pregnant. I’m not limited by physical things anymore. So I guess I can still sense Alex, because I’m on a different plane so to speak. Which would explain why he can’t see me or sense me. The magic of the necklace brought me back, or at least my spirit anyways. Alex is still bound my the physical barriers. He can’t sense me, because I’m not there to sense. The only way he would be able to even feel my presence, would be if I were right there next to him. Whereas I can feel everyone and everything. So of course I’d be able to still sense him.”
