Fan Fiction ❯ Trancending Death ❯ The Eastern Realm Awaits ( Chapter 41 )

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
Neither Shadow or Aurora knew what they were doing. Running toward the Eastern Realm in hopes of catching the army that was forming to fight with Alex, was a ridiculous idea. Neither one of them knew what they hoped to accomplish if they did find the army. All they knew all they understood, was that despite all reason, they had to get to the Eastern Realm.
Both the demons sprinted through the woods. They didn’t dare glance at each other for fear of breaking whatever spell or madness had consumed them. Both were conscious of the fact that they were each absorbed by their own thoughts.
Shadow’s eyes were fixed straight ahead of him. Even though he desperately wanted to look at Aurora, he knew he couldn’t. Even now he was still undecided on what he really wanted to do. His mind was confused with the emotions that were begging to consume him. Right now he needed a clear head to make a decision that could and would affect their very lives. If he even glanced at Aurora, he knew he would not be able to think about this with a clear head. If he so much at looked at her, he would allow his emotions to cloud his judgement.
How can this be happening? How can I possibly make a decision such as this? Either way you look at it, it’s hopeless. No matter what I choose only tragedy will come from my decision. The life of my mate and my unborn child rest in this decision, as well as the lives of everyone in this realm. No matter how you look at it, this situation is hopeless. If we fight Alex, we will die, but if we don’t this realm is doomed. The only chance we have is if we can talk Alex out of doing this. Even that is a slim chance. Alex is too steadfast in his convictions, and despite his methods, I can’t honestly blame him. Even now I can’t shake the feeling that something’s not right. Try as I might, I can’t consciously fight Alex unless I know it is the right thing to do. My feelings on this are some what misguided, and despite my efforts, how can I not be prejudice in my opinion when the life of my mate and child rides on my decision? Any normal man would act without thinking of the consequences. They would be fueled by their emotions. When it comes to the safety of one’s mate, they would fight to the death without hesitation. This situation however, doesn’t sit well with me. Something’s just not right. I can’t put my finger on it, but something just doesn’t add up.
“Shadow, would you please just this once, not analyze everything? Every time something happens, you always have to look at it from every little angle and see every outcome. Couldn’t you, just this once, look at this for what it is? I hate we have to do, but the fact is, we have to do it. We don’t have any choice, Shadow. Either we fight Alex, or this realm is doomed,” Aurora said. She stopped suddenly and turned to face Shadow as she spoke.
Shadow could tell that the look on her face was one of exasperation, and it wasn’t hard for him to tell why. He too slowed down and soon stopped in front of Aurora. He turned to her, and for a second didn’t know what to say to her. He shook his head and looked at her again, this time more intensely.
“What are you doing?” Aurora asked slowly.
“Look at me,” Shadow replied.
“I am looking at you!”
“No, I mean really look at me. Do you notice anything different? Anything at all?”
Aurora looked at Shadow incredulously before finally deciding to indulge him. She stared at his face for a long time. It took her a second, but she did notice something different. She couldn’t put her finger on what it was exactly, but she could sense that something was different.
“Something’s changed within both of us. Think about it, ever since Brittany first began talking to us we’ve been at each other’s throats. We used to never fight. If we did, we always made up shortly after. Now we can barely carry on a conversation without arguing.”
“What are you getting at?”
“What I’m getting at is this, I’m not sure what’s going on Aurora. I’m not sure what to do, not anymore. There are too many things that just don’t add up. Too many unanswered questions. All I know is, is that it’s like all my emotions have been kicked up a notch and all my abilities to rationalize have been taken away. I’m acting solely on instinct, solely on what I feel. That’s not like me. You, you are following the advice of a specter just because she told you that if you didn’t, something bad would happen. That’s not like you. You’re not the kind of person to be so willing to believe everything you hear. Think about it Aurora, something is definitely not right with this situation!”
“The only thing that’s not right is the fact that you’ve evidently lost your mind!”
“What?”
“You’re choosing to be safe and not fight Alex. You’re choosing your friend over the life of me and the life of your unborn child!”
“I never said that!”
“Well, you sure as Hell act like it,” Aurora snapped. “You evidently don’t care about me, or my child. Maybe it would be better for him to die than to be born to a father like you!”
Shadow opened his mouth in shock, but slowly shut it and turned away from Aurora. His eyes darkened with pain and sorrow as he averted his gaze. He wasn’t even able to look Aurora in the face. A combination of anger and pain began to consume him, taking over his rational thought.
Aurora’s eyes widened in horror at what she had just said. She covered her mouth with her hands and shook her head, desperately wishing she could take back what she had just said. Why did I say that? God, Shadow would be the best father in the world. How could I honestly stand before him and say what I just did? What has gotten hold of me? I love Shadow and I know that he loves me. It’s ridiculous to think anything else. So, why did I say what I did?
“Shadow...I,” Aurora started meekly. Her hands were shaking as she tried to place them on his shoulder and turn him around to face her. ”Shadow, please look at me.”
“No,” Shadow said abruptly. He shrugged her hands off of his shoulder, but turned around to face her none the less.
Aurora gasped at the look in Shadow’s eyes. His eyes were cold as stone, they actually looked grey to her. Despite the coldness that should’ve frozen her gaze, she could see the pain that had consumed them. A pain that she knew, she had caused. She was expecting this of course, but nothing as intense as the look he now gave her. Mixed in with his own sorrow was a burning hatred of such magnitude that Aurora couldn’t believe it.
“Shadow...I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that,” Aurora stuttered. She closed her eyes and took a deep breathe before continuing. “Maybe, maybe there is some truth to your words after all. Something is wrong. I should’ve never said that. You would...you will make a great father to our child.”
Shadow smiled weakly at her feeble attempt to undo what she had already done. His eyes seemed to glaze over as he spoke. The confidence in his words made it seem as if he could see into the future and know what was going to happen. “A child that will have no future unless we stop, Alex.”
“We don’t know that Kiba! You were just saying that something didn’t feel right. Maybe you were correct in that statement. Maybe it was me who was wrong all along,” Aurora exclaimed.
“Earlier you were saying that I was wrong, now you say that I am right? If we don’t fight him our child will have no future. I’ll do this, Aurora. I’ll do this for you and I’ll do this for our child, but I’ll be damned if you think I am doing this because some specter says we should. Something’s not right, and even though I disagree with this, I’ll do it.”
Aurora could tell that Shadow hated what he was doing. The look in his eyes told her all that she need to know. She couldn’t even look at Shadow for the tears that cascaded down her face and blurred her vision. She wanted to yell at him. She wanted to tell him that he was wrong. She wanted to scream at him for talking about Brittany like he just had. But the look in Shadow’s eyes made her realize that she could never say any of those things to him. It suddenly hit her just how much Shadow was really willing to sacrifice for her. She was about to say something to him. She knew she had to say something to him. Anything would be better than letting him slowly suffer like he was doing now. But how could she honestly tell him comforting things to ease his pain, when her heart was so full of grief that she too felt the need to be comforted? Before she could find the answer, Shadow broke the silence.
“You were right about one thing. We can’t just stand still and do nothing. The only way we’ll find an answer to this madness is if we charge ahead. The key to all of this, the solution to this problem and the answers to this mystery all like within Alex. If we find him, we’ll find what we are looking for. Me, you, Baou, and the others are all being drawn toward him. We are drawn toward him because despite the way he is going about things, we can’t help but feel drawn toward him. His irrational behavior and everything he’s doing, just further causes us to want to be near him. The fact is, is that we are drawn to him because of the emotion that he is letting consume him. None of us are ready to condemn him for his actions. Mainly, because we know that given the chance, we would do the same for our mates,” Shadow softly said. He tried to feign a smile and motioned for Aurora to come to him. He wrapped his arms around her and tried to console her crying. “The level of love that Alex and Brittany shared is one that should definitely be admired. We envy that love, that’s why we search for him. We want to see if it’s truly love that drives him, or something more sinister. No matter what happens, we will survive this Aurora. If it means killing Alex for your safety, I will do it.”
Shadow’s words sent shivers down Aurora’s spine. She couldn’t help but have an ominous feeling about this, but at the same time she was glad that she and him were no longer arguing with one another. Not to mention, for the first time since all of this madness and chaos had begun, she felt truly safe. Shadow started to let go of her, but Aurora tightened her grip on him. “Please, hold me just a little longer.”
Shadow hesitated for a moment, but then wrapped his arms around her once more and rested his head on top of hers. Shadow closed his eyes and relaxed himself as he held onto her. For some reason he couldn’t remember the last time he felt like this. It seemed as if it had been an eternity since he last felt relaxed and some what happy. He wanted to stay like this forever. He knew at this moment, that he would do anything to keep this feeling. He nearly cursed when he felt the hair on the back of his neck stand on end, due to some unseen force. His body automatically tensed as he searched the woods with his yes, trying to find what had spooked him.
Aurora felt Shadow tense up, so she looked at him to see what was wrong. “What is it Shadow? What’s wrong?”
Aurora turned to follow Shadow’s intense gaze. The moment she turned around she saw what had interested him so much. “Brittany....”
