Fan Fiction ❯ Trancending Death ❯ What to do? ( Chapter 40 )
[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
“What power? I was unaware that the Devil’s control over him, also bestowed upon him more power.”
“Yes, although the increase of power was probably not intentional. Even though Alex does not sense the demon aura that is surrounding his own, his body naturally detected it and has now adapted to it. It has become infused with his body and his own aura. Still, even if this was not originally planned, it has worked in the Devil’s favor. Alex’s strength, speed, and endurance has been increased, but at the cost of his healing factor. Which means, even though he is strong enough to take on numerous demons at once, even without using his demonic power, the fact that he can’t heal himself will bring upon his downfall. Even gong up against a demon and an elf, he had trouble. The power that he is drawing upon will be his demise. Eventually, either one of two things will happen. One, he will die when the armies of the realm lash out against him. He will not use his powers and he will perish. The other possibility, is that the aura that is increasing his power will kill him. Even though Alex might not know this, this aura is actually acting like a double-edged spell. Not only does it take away his healing factor, but it doubles his muscle mass, putting more strain on is body. So if he over exerts himself, his muscles will rupture and that will leave him helpless at the hands of his enemies.”
“Shit, I was really hoping to hear something more encouraging than that. This Devil really does have his bases covered, doesn’t he? So, the only way we can even hope to really be able to use Alex, is if we first free him from this demonic essence? You could purify him, but I doubt he’d exactly stand still and let you. That means you’d have to fight him, and hope and pray that you are able to complete the pentagram and cast the spell before he rips you to shreds. Even then we don’t know if purifying this essence would actually do us any good,” Tristan exclaimed.
“We could send a team down, and have them purify him. Demon Lord or not, he’s no match for our magic,” Zemnas proposed.
“You’ve got to be joking, Zemnas! We can’t just go around sending our men into other realms. The fact that Lucia has interfered is bad enough. I’ll admit, I am still pissed by what’s going on and by how you intend to solve this matter. Promising him what he cannot have, especially something as dear to him as the life of his wife and child, that is horrible. Still, I guess it is a necessary evil. Sometimes to defeat evil, you must first become evil yourself. I understand that, but I don’t think it is wise to send our men to interfere in another realm,” Shimera protested.
“They won’t have to,” Lucia replied.
“Well, how else do you suggest we handle this? You cannot do it by yourself, otherwise you would have done it already,” Zemnas questioned.
“Everything I have done, this Devil has been prepared for. All my efforts have been in vain, but the sacrifices of others have not.”
“What do you mean by that?”
“I tried to purify Alex. I tried to talk him into allowing me to do it to him. If he was willing, I wouldn’t have had to fight him. He refused, and before I could press him further, someone came. Evidently there is an elf in that realm that has eyes that can see the two clashing auras encircling Alex. He also knows the spell to purify auras. I do not know who taught him these abilities, or why he has them, but either way I am grateful. He, along with the demon that helped him, managed to place the pentagram and finish the spell to purify that Devil’s essence. Those two sacrifice their lives, not knowing how monumental their sacrifice really was. Just as you had said before, we had no way of knowing how Alex would react to the purification. With the essence being bonded to his own aura, the outcomes were unpredictable. It seems that unlike others, which would return to their normal selves once the essence has been purified, Alex remains unchanged. The aura is so massive and so intertwined with Alex’s own aura, that it will take time for it to completely leave his body. Until then, he will remain blind to the truth, but at least the essence has been purified. As long as I can keep this Devil from trying to influence Alex again, and thus tightening his grip upon Alex, I should be able to continue on with my original plan.”
“So an elf and a demon fought side by side to purify their Lord. Stranger things have happened. I still can’t believe they actually thought they could defeat him,” Zemnas mused.
“They didn’t. They knew that by challenging him, their fate was death.”
“Emotions, I will never understand them. Such feelings of love, hatred, jealousy, and passion. These things cause more wars and hardships than anything else,” Tristan muttered.
“What are the names of these two?” Zemnas asked.
“The elf’s name is Rire. The demon goes by the name Baou,” Lucia replied.
“Good, we will be sure to arrange special accommodations for the deeds they have done. Lucia, I would like to apologize once more to you, about or harshness towards you. I see now you have had only the best interest of our realm in mind. By using this Devil to kill the other Devil, we will be killing two birds with one stone. Or rather, two devils with one devil. Shimera, will see you out. We have much to discuss and much to consider, but I will tell you this. You have our full support,” Zemnas said with a small smile and a nod in Lucia’s direction.
The moment Lucia heard Zemnas’s words, he felt a lump form in his throat. Brittany’s words came ringing back to his ears once more. You’re just using him. All he is, is a puppet to you!
Lucia paled at these thoughts, and as Shimera walked toward him, he could tell she knew what he was thinking. The sad look in her eyes, and the weak smile that formed on her lips, told him all he needed to know.
I’ve gained the acceptance and the approval of the elders, but at what cost? I’m using him, I know that. At first, it was just to save the realm. Mainly because I was so pissed that the elders hadn’t done anything about it. Then, it was because I thought that if I gained the approval of the elders and became an elder myself, I could do something to actually help. The fact remains, that I am more of a monster than anyone. I’m using this man, feeding off of his desire to bring is wife and child back. I’m toying with his emotions, his heart, and his soul all for my own gain. He really is nothing more than a puppet to me. No, he’s much more than that. For if all he was to me was a puppet, I wouldn’t feel this heaviness in my heart at the thought of what I’m really doing to him. Soon, soon he will be free of the Devil’s influence. It will be that time, when I shall have my talk with him. I can’t keep doing this. I can’t keep leading him on like this. Telling him that he can bring back his wife and child, when it is strictly forbidden to do so. What was I thinking? If Brittany regains her memories, she will hate me and him for all eternity.
Shimera walked past Lucia, heading for the door. Lucia instinctively followed her, even though he was still contemplating what to do. Without turning around or even looking at him, Shimera answered his unasked question. “Sometimes, the right thing, is the hardest thing to do. What is more important, staying in good favor with the elders, the elders which you honestly despise, or reuniting a man who has sold his soul, with the woman and child he desperately wants to be with?”
Lucia froze in his tracks. Never before had Shimera spoken to him like that. Never before had her voice seemed so soft, yet so firm and so wise. Once again she reminded him of Brittany, and at that thought, his mind was made up. Just as soon as I’ve found favor with the council, I’m going to lose it.
Shimera lead Lucia back toward the main gates. Once they were there she turned around and stared to leave without saying another word. Lucia started to say something to her, it just didn’t seem right to let her just walk away without saying something. Yet, try as he might, he couldn’t think of anything at all to say to her.
“That girl is waiting for you. I wouldn’t leave her alone if I were you,” Shimera stated without looking at Lucia. Once again she started to walk away from him. This time however, Lucia spoke up.
“What do you mean? Surely you don’t think that anything could happen to her while she’s here, do you?” Lucia asked uncertainly.
“That is not for me to say. Although I will say this. It was unwise of you to reveal all that you know to the elder council. You might have the best intentions for this realm and the other realm, motivation your actions, but what might be your motivation, might not be the motivation of that of the elders. Keep that in mind whenever you speak to them.”
“Why, I mean, you’re one of the elders. What other motivation could the elders possibly have besides keeping the peace and order between the realms?”
Shimera smiled softly at Lucia’s question. “You know, you remind me a lot of him.”
“Remind you of who?”
“Zemnas, back before he became the leader of the elders. He had so many strict ideals, so many things he wanted to do. He wanted to protect the weak and be one of the greatest and most powerful leaders of all,” Shimera replied, smiling at the memories. Her face darkened as new memories entered her thoughts. “Yet despite all his power, he was naive. He was naive to how dark a person, how dark a heart, can really become. Lucia, promise me this. No matter what happens, don’t let your heart fall to darkness. Don’t let your heart or the heart of that girl fall to the powers of darkness.”
Lucia’s face darkened at Shimera’s words. “I can’t do that. I have already sold my heart to the darkness when I set Alex down this path.”
“No, you haven’t, but you will. Brittany’s heart will be taken by the darkness if she ever learns the truth of Alex’s actions. As long as you allow Alex to travel down this path, you run the risk of losing her as well.”
“That’s ridiculous. I won’t lose her. Her heart is too strong to be taken by the darkness.”
“Her heart is too strong. That is why she will be taken. Her heart is too strong because of her love for Alex. If he goes into the darkness, so shall she.”
“Then what would you have me do?”
“Stop him. Let him be free to choose his own path. Set his heart at ease and release him from this path. He can do this, without selling his heart to the darkness. Just give him a chance.”
“But if I do that.... “
”What’s more important to you, pleasing the council or that girl? If you don’t free Alex from this path that you have set him upon, then you will lose both her and him.”
“The only way that Alex’s heart will be eased, the only way he will ever be able to find the light again is if he gets the chance to talk to Brittany,” Lucia finally said.
“Then let him talk to her.”
