Alex’s words hit like a knife to both Aurora and Shadow’s hearts.
“Alex, no! Shadow, can’t do that! How could you ask your friend to take your life?”
“I’m suffering, Aurora. I’m waiting for death to come and take me. Shadow can end it all with just one attack. I once had to take the life of someone to end their suffering, and now I am asking that Shadow will do it for me.”
Both of the demons were speechless as they stared at Alex. Finally, Shadow spoke up. “Alex, I will watch over this realm in your stead. And even though I don’t want to...I will take your life and end your suffering.”
Alex closed his eyes and nodded. “Thank you.”
“I...I...,” Shadow suddenly stopped speaking. His shook his head, as if he was trying to get an image out of his mind. A second later he looked back down at Alex. “I can’t believe you’ve already forgotten what we talked about?”
Alex’s eyes were glazing over at he stared at Shadow. For the longest time Alex didn’t have the slightest clue about what Shadow was talking about. Something in Shadow’s eyes made Alex smile to himself.
“So you did come,” Alex whispered.
“You knew I would. You remember what we talked about before. Right?”
“Yes.”
“So, what is your decision. I am already committed to th is. I have made a move and opened the Forbidden tome. There’s no going back for me. For you, however, you can accept your fate and go to the torturous destiny that awaits you. The decision is yours.”
“I’m dying, Lucia. You know what my decision is. Take from me whatever you need, just do what you have to, to save her.”
“Very well. It will be done,” Shadow said.
“Shadow? What are you talking about?”
“Do not worry, everything will be okay. Help Shadow to watch over this realm. In the time to come you will both become great leaders in your own right.” Shadow turned to Alex and held his hand above Alex’s chest. Alex gasped as a white orb erupted from his chest. The orb twirled around Shadow’s hand as he pointed it toward the sky. “Now, cut your own path and change all our fates.”
The orb that was encircling Shadow’s hand suddenly launched itself into the sky. Before Aurora could ask what happened she felt Alex go limp in her arms.
“Alex? Alex? Alex!” Aurora yelled. Her tears crashed onto Alex’s face and she knew that he had just breathed his last.
“Aurora?” Shadow asked in a dazed tone. When Aurora didn’t answer he immediately knew what had happened. Shadow knelt beside Aurora and held her in his arms.
“He’s gone,” she whispered.
“Brittany!” Alcadan exclaimed as Brittany began to glow. “What’s going on?”
“I-I don’t know!” Brittany exclaimed. She turned to Shimera who was standing far away from them. “Shimera, what’s happening?”
Shimera couldn’t look Brittany in the face as she spoke. “You’re being given a second chance.”
“What?”
“Go to him, lass,” a familiar voice said.
Before Brittany could say anything else she disappeared in a bright flash of light.
Two figures were standing on the middle of a street corner. The world around them was frozen in time. Only they were able to move as time stood still. Before them, was someone clothed all in white who appeared as nothing more than an luminescent specter.
A man and woman stood hand in hand. The man was about six feet tall. He had broad shoulders and brown hair that was tied back in a small ponytail that came to his shoulder blades. He had a brown goatee and glasses covered his dazzling blue eyes. He was wearing a grey jacket and pants with a black shirt beneath it. Even beneath his heavy clothes, his muscular appearance was obvious.
Standing next to him was a woman who came to his shoulder in height. She had dark blonde hair that descended down to the small of her back. Her feminine curves were shown off well in the sleek tight fitting black dress that she was wearing. Her face was one of natural beauty that required little if any make up. Her lips had a naturally dark tint to them, and in the way she carried herself you could tell that she had survived through many challenges in her life.
“What’s going on?” the woman asked. She was obviously startled by everything around her. Especially by the man who was holding her hand.
“You’ve been brought back. You’re alive again Brittany. Although you’ll no longer be known by Brittany in this realm. Unfortunately jobs as Demon Lord and sorceress are hard to come by in the Human Realm. So you’ve been given new identities, new lives, and new chances for happiness.”
“Wait, but I thought that if I was brought back, that Alex would have to offer his soul to do so.” Brittany looked at the man beside her who turned and looked her way. “You are Alex. Aren’t you?”
“Gee, I love you too,” Alex replied with a smirk.
The instant Brittany saw his smirk she knew it truly was him. “Then how? How can this be happening?”
“I used a spell in the Forbidden Tome. I gave you a second chance in life. The only cost for that was a sacrifice of great power,” Lucia told her.
“Great power? What do you mean?” Brittany asked. Confused by what he was saying.
“Look closely at Alex,” Lucia instructed.
Brittany thought it was odd, but did as she was instructed to. As she stared into the unfamiliar face of the man before her, she could tell that this was in fact the man that she had fallen in love with. His eyes were the same light shade of blue, that seemed to be shrouded in mystery. His face still held love only for her. His smile was reserved for only those moments that were truly meant to be cherished. But still she couldn’t fathom what Lucia was talking about.
When Lucia realized that Brittany didn’t understand what he meant, he added something else. “He may have changed appearance, but don’t you find that something is missing. No horns, no tattoos, no claws, no fangs...no demonic aura.”
Brittany froze and look at Alex. “You mean.... Alex, tell me you didn’t.”
“Heh, I was willing to give my life up to be with you. My power was but a small price. Now we can finally be together without worry or fear. I believe that my power, which acts as the pact for Lucia’s spell, was nothing compared to the reward that we get.”
“Alex...so this is it. We’re really back. We’re...we’re really both back,” Brittany asked. The hope in her eyes was just as obvious as the fear that this might not last.
“There’s only one way to find out,” Alex whispered as he wrapped his arms around her and brought his lips to hers.
“I love you,” Brittany whispered after they pulled back from their kiss.
“I know.”
Lucia started to fade from sight. Realizing that they no longer needed his aid. They would do just fine in this realm. If their love could survive even death, the troubles of this realm would be nothing to them. Before he could fade away completely, he saw that Alex and Brittany had broken away for just a brief second and were now looking his way.
“Thank you Lucia, for everything,” Alex told him. “Without your help....”
“Don’t mention it. I followed my heart and did what I believed to be correct. That’s something I learned from you. From both of you.”
Brittany moved and quickly hugged Lucia. “Thank you,” she whispered.
Lucia smiled, knowing that they would be just fine. He quickly faded out of the realm and returned to his.
The world resumed its normal busy pace, and no one paid any attention to the two lovers, who held onto each other as if they let go even for a second, they would be lost forever. They now seemed frozen in time, their lips locked for all eternity.
“Now our story truly begins,” Alex whispered.
“As the story of the Demon Lord and his mate, slowly fades away,” Brittany finished as she leaned her head against his chest.
Lucia returned to the room which contained the Forbidden Tome. He knew that the moment he stepped out of this room, he would be condemned for his actions. He didn’t care, he had done what needed to be done. As he turned to leave, he noticed something in the room. Something that he didn’t think belong there. Laying behind the tome was a scroll. Lucia quickly glanced at it. Figuring if you were going to sin, you might as well go all the way. What he read made his heart stop.
Lucia ran out of the room and headed straight for Zemnas, who he knew was already expecting him. Before Lucia was even able to enter through the door Zemnas was already speaking to him.
“You used the Forbidden Tome to give them a new life. Then you erased the memories of their child from their minds to save them from any pain they might have. How very noble of you,” Zemnas stated.
“How could you, Zemnas?” Lucia yelled, not caring anymore just how deep a grave he was digging for himself. “You had no right to do this! How could you?”
“I had no right? I’m not the one who broke into the room with the Forbidden Tome, used forbidden magic to redirect destiny, and possibly change the futures of everyone in all the realms. Your punishment will be severe for your crimes.”
“You had this planned all along you monster! You knew what I would do!”
“I still have no idea what you’re talking about,” Zemnas replied in a calm tone.
“Why didn’t you tell them that their child is still alive?” Lucia asked, knowing that what he had just learned affected everyone more than anything he had done. “Why did you keep this a secret? Why didn’t you tell Brittany and Alex their child is still alive?”
