“No! Alex!” Brittany yelled as she watched as Alex slowly rose from Zanatos’s body. She could sense that his life was rapidly coming to an end. With every step he took, he ended his life a second earlier. Her fists were so tight that her knuckles were white. She shook her head in disbelief at what she was watching.
Alcadan wrapped his arms around her and held her close to him. “It’s okay child. He did what he had to. He knew that this would happen.”
“But if he dies I’ll never be able to see him again! Because if he dies....” Brittany couldn’t finish the rest of the sentence. Instead she just said something else. “It was different when I thought I could be with him. It was different, because we could be together and together we would find a way to bring our child back to life. But now....”
Lucia looked to Shimera. “Watch over them. I will be back.”
He turned to leave, but Shimera caught his wrist before he was able to. “What are you going to do, Lucia? Please don’t tell me you’re going to do what I think you are. If you do, do you know what the consequences will be?”
“I’m following my heart, Shimera. Isn’t that what you told me to do one upon a time? I’m doing what I believe I should be doing. I can’t keep following Zemnas’s orders, not anymore. I know I’m going to receive Hell for this, but I don’t care if I get punished. Not as long as it’s for something that I believe in. Alex is going to die unless I do something. So please, don’t try and stop me,” Lucia said with a pleading look in his eyes.
Shimera looked at him for a while before finally smiling. “You do realize that you’re a lot like him. Right? It seems that you’ve slowly started to become more and more like him, ever since you first went to the Demon Realm.”
“I know. I’m probably more like him than even you could ever believe. So, are you going to let me go?”
Shimera stepped forward and kissed Lucia on the lips. The expression on his face told her that he wasn’t expecting it, but he soon leaned into the kiss. When she pulled away she could only smile. “Go. Do what you believe you need to. Follow your heart, wherever it might lead you.”
“Thank you,” Lucia whispered. He quickly started to walk away, but stopped and turned around once more to face her. “Don’t worry, I’ll come back.”
“You’d better. Things wouldn’t be nearly as interesting without a trouble maker like you here,” Shimera replied with a small smile.
Lucia only nodded as he turned around and quickly made his way through the thick mob of people.
“Is he going to be okay?” Cherish asked as she hung to her mother’s waist. Small tears fell from her eyes as she watched what she knew were Alex’s final moments.
Leah bit her lip, uncertain of what to say. She knew of the fate that awaited Alex if he were to die, so how could she honestly answer that.
“He’ll be fine sweetheart,” Seth said as he kneeled beside his daughter. He kissed her on the forehead and looked into her eyes. “He’s got someone that he loves. That’ll give him the strength to go on.”
Cherish smiled at his words, but still her tears fell. “So Alex will be okay?”
“He’ll be well enough,” Rire said as he looked over at them. “As your father put it. Alex has something left to live for. If he can cheat death again, he most assuredly will.”
“So in other words, Alex still has enough fight left in him to survive. He’s not going to die from just those measly little scratches. So stop the water works kiddo. Besides, you shouldn’t be crying for someone like him. He wouldn’t think that he was worthy to have you crying over him,” Baou said in an unusually soft tone.
“But how can I not cry when it makes me sad? I don’t want him to die!” Cherish said.
Baou ruffled her hair with his hands. “You’re not the only one. Alex did a lot of bad things once upon a time, but even those who he hurt still can’t find it in their hearts to wish him any pain.” With that thought he looked up at Cherish’s parents. “Because in the end they realized that hating someone who already cursed himself for his deeds wasn’t worth it. At first they hated him, but then after seeing what Alex has become, they knew that their deaths did have some affect on him. Some more than anyone could imagine. We all don’t want him to die, because if he does he’ll never be able to see Brittany again. Or ever have a chance to bring his child back. That’s why we’re all praying that he’ll be okay. So stop the waterworks kid. Alex wouldn’t want you crying over him. So instead of crying, smile. Smiling for him would make him want to live even more. So, are you going to quit crying?”
Cherish quickly nodded and wiped the tears from her eyes. Her eyes were still watering, but no tears fell from them. “See, no tears.”
“Good,” Baou said with a smile. He then looked over his shoulder to see Brittany still wrapped in the arms of Alcadan. “You know, you could learn a thing or two from this girl. You might as well quit crying as well, because we all know that Alex is going to make it. Isn’t that right everyone?”
Cheers erupted from the crowd. Everyone was cheering Alex on. Everyone was praying that he would be okay. The sight of everyone so worried about Alex made Brittany’s tears seem foolish. He’ll make it. Somehow, someway, he’ll make it. I just have to believe.
Brittany wiped the tears from her eyes and stepped away from Alcadan. She tried to put on her best smile, which was still pretty weak, but it was a smile nonetheless. “See, no worries,” Brittany said in a shaky voice.
“Good,” Baou said with a smirk. “Cause I’d hate to beat your ass for crying over that asshole’s death.”
“Alex is an asshole?” Cherish asked with an innocent look on her face.
Baou’s eyes doubled in size as he turned to face her. He quickly shook his head no. “No! I didn’t mean...I mean...that is...just forget what I said!”
“Aww, but I want to know. You didn’t tell me what you meant by shaking the whole realm either! It’s not fair!”
“Rire, help me out here!” Baou begged.
All anyone could do, even Cherish’s parents and the crowd behind them erupted into laughter.
Baou growled in frustration. “This isn’t funny! Someone help me out here!”
“I think you should explain it to her,” Leah said with a smirk. She then walked over to the stunned Baou and kissed him on the cheek. “Seeing as how she’s taken such a fancy to you, and you’ve taught her so many new words and things. It’s only right that you explain them to her.”
Baou could see the devilish look on Leah’s, Seth’s, and Rire’s faces as they stepped back away to let Baou face Cherish.
“So what does it mean?” Cherish asked in her voice that made even Baou’s resolve break.
“Oh boy,” Baou sighed.
Brittany turned and looked back to the vision of Alex. She brought her hands to her necklace and grasped it tightly. “Be safe,” she whispered
Alex kneeled beside Zanatos’s now still body. Alex knew that Zanatos was dead. With a wound like the one Alex had inflicted upon him, he wasn’t going to move ever again. Alex held onto his chest, which blood continued to trickled down from. Zanatos’s eyes were still open, thus Alex reached over and closed Zanatos’s eyes. As he did this, Zanatos’s body began to transform. His body reverted back to its original form. Once more Alex found himself staring into the face of Kiba. Alex felt his heart jump into his throat as he stared into the face of his best friend.
“Rest in peace my friend. May your soul finally be set free.” Alex was going to say more, but gasped in pain as his wounds flared up and he gasped for breath. When he was finally able to catch his breath his words came out in gasps. “I guess I will be joining you shortly so be ready for me when I come. I won’t be able to see her so tell her I’m sorry.”
“Alex!”
Alex looked up to see Aurora and Shadow running toward him. He could see the surprise in their eyes as they saw him in his current form. True to both their characters as ever, they didn’t say anything about that. They instead focused solely on the fact of how badly wounded he was.
“Raion’s gone to help! Are you okay?” Shadow asked as he neared him.
“Oh my God, Alex!” Aurora yelled as she saw just how bad Alex looked.
“Don’t worry about me,” Alex replied weakly. He tried to stand, but the moment he did he fell back to the ground.
Aurora barely managed to slide and catch Alex before he collided with the ground. “You say you’re okay, but you can’t even stand! My God, Alex. I can’t believe this happened. I mean...Kiba...I can’t believe it was him all along.”
“No,” Alex said softly.
“Don’t speak! You need to save your energy until Raion comes back with help,” Aurora told him.
“No,I need to tell you this so that you won’t harbor any ill will against him. It wasn’t him,” Alex said weakly. “Kiba died the day of the second great battle. The person whom we believed to be Kiba, was actually Zanatos. That is why he’s been acting strange. He was being used.”
“What?” Shadow said in shock. He quickly recovered from his shock and looked down at Alex. His eyes narrowed as something else hit him. He knelt beside Alex and looked him in the eyes. “You’re not going to make it. Are you?”
“Shadow! How can you eve say that?” Aurora asked in horror.
“Because it’s true,” Shadow said softly.
Alex smiled weakly through his swollen and bleeding lips. “Never could fool you. Could I? Shadow, I meant what I said earlier. When I’m gone, it’s up to you to watch over the realm. Take care of it.”
“Alex....”
“Promise me, Shadow. Promise me that you’ll take care of this realm.”
Shadow hesitated for only a second before nodding. “You knew Kiba was the Devil. That is why you wanted me to watch over this realm instead of him. Didn’t you?”
Alex nodded. “But it’s not just that. You honestly are the best choice. I have faith in you. But I have one more favor to ask.”
“What is it?”
“Kill me.”
Alcadan wrapped his arms around her and held her close to him. “It’s okay child. He did what he had to. He knew that this would happen.”
“But if he dies I’ll never be able to see him again! Because if he dies....” Brittany couldn’t finish the rest of the sentence.
