Prologue

Lights from the nearby village of Naba cast a faint glow upon the surrounding forest. Even there in the clearing, just outside the Flower District, her face was shimmering through her obvious pained expression. She was so beautiful.

I'm sorry...

"Why..." the woman before him struggled to reach out her hand, desperately looking for his help.

Forgive me...

"Why Serphendias...I-I..." her voice was coming in short gasps and the puddle beneath her was steadily growing larger. At this point she doesn't have much longer now, he saw to it that her death would be quick.

Don't say it...please don't...

"I loved you" it came out so softly that the snake demon almost didn't catch it. As the life in her eyes faded and her head hit the ground, Serphendias knelt down beside her. Her body gave one final shudder as she died; finally releasing the last threads of life she had so desperately been clinging to. He only leaned down far enough to whisper into her ear as if she could still hear him.

"I know."

He's going to kill me

Kat could feel his heart racing in his rib cage as his feet pounded the damp ground beneath him.

Scratch that, he's going to kill us!

Just ahead of him, Kat could hear the dog demon prince, Murasaki, laugh out loud with mischievous satisfaction as the lizard demon prince, Kuruko, to his right was sporting an all out grin. He almost asked what was so amusing, but thought better of it, he already new what they would say, "Serphy's angry!” before breaking out into a fit of insane giggles. He really should know better by now than to get drawn into their stupid schemes. However, this particular plan of theirs was just too tempting to resist.

It could actually be there, it could actually exist!

They all cringed at the sound of violent hissing that was following close behind them. Kat kept running as fast as he could just barely noticing as the heavy canopy of trees that surrounded them flew past. Suddenly they broke free from the dense forest and came upon a large stone manor that was nearly hidden by a millennia worth of thick vines and foliage. Jagged rocks and stones that jutted out of the land completed the structure’s disguise. This was place they had been looking for.
The trio slowed their pace, almost to a complete stop to look on in awe of the huge structure and relief that they had finally reached their destination. Their momentary victory didn’t last long as they heard a wolf howl near by and the furious hiss of a monstrous serpent now visibly just beyond the trees. They once again picked up the pace and raced into the building.
Once inside Murasaki navigated their way through the manor, leading them up a grand staircase and down the east portion of the manor. After turning the corner at the end of the hall they could hear as the giant serpent and abnormally sized wolf burst through the front entrance and continued their pursuit after the others. At that moment all three shared the same thought…

Uh-oh…

Kat and Kuruko all but crashed into Murasaki as he came to a sudden halt in front of one of the doors on our right. “This it, this is the room.” he murmured as he reached out and threw open the door.
They quickly closed and locked the door securely behind them, then began their search for an item that has been missing for the better part of a millennia. It didn’t take long at all to locate the rather dull looking chest and rip the lid right off its hinges. Inside, a shimmer of metal could be seen wrapped within an aged and frayed piece of fabric. They were as still as stone.

This is it…

Kat finally reached forward, grabbed a loose edge of the cloth, and quickly pulled it away. They all gasped as they finally set their eyes on a treasure that hasn’t been seen in 1000 years.

We found it; the rumors were true for once!

In that moment the door was blown right off its hinges and its splintered remains were scattered throughout the room. From where they were crouched on the floor, they could all recognize the two figures that stood just beyond the debris.

Now we’re going to die

Kat slowly rose from the floor on shaky legs. He wasn’t quite sure how he was able stand, then again he wasn’t sure at all whether he would survive to see tomorrow, let alone speak out loud. He took a deep breath and decided that everything in life was ruled by trial and error and that miracles could happen at any time, or at least that’s what he was hoping for. Kat finally lifted his head so that the Snake and Wolf demon were in full view. “Hi Serphy, hi Heidiki,” he laughed nervously as he addressed the two in the door way, “what’s up?”

Bye-bye…
