Serphendias, the snake demon Prince, glared across the room at its occupants. His look of contempt promised a very painful death to those on the receiving end. “What the hell is going on!?”
Kat openly flinched at the snake's sharp tone, as he averted his two tone eyes quickly to the floor, while the smug expressions on Murosaki and Kuruko's faces persisted. Even though Serphy had already reduced his former stature to his human form, didn't mean he was any less intimidating. Heidiki, in his human form as well, finally spoke up. “You three have really done it now. Just what are you all up to?”
A pair of eyes - one blue, the other silver and slitted- timidly reached those of the wolf demon, as Kat tried to reply. “Well…”
“Why don't you see for yourselves,” Kuruko shouted as Murosaki kicked the worn, old chest towards the demons standing in the doorway.
The two demons grinned at each other as Serphendias and Heidiki both looked on in awe. “How did you -”
Serphy couldn't finish his question, it has been a millennia since the necklace of the Ancient Ones was last seen. It had long since been lost, stolen during the Great Rebellion that occurred between humans and demons, when the latter sought to enslave the other.
While Murosaki and Kuruko continued to smirk at one another, Kat stepped forward cautiously, in hopes that Serphy-papa's anger had dissipated. “We heard some rumors in the last town and decided to take a look.”
The snake prince glanced quickly at Kat before looking back at the single gem that adorned a rather dull chain. The jewel itself looked as if a dark storm of blues and purples were brewing inside. It also looked like a small fortune.
There's a legend behind this particular piece of piece jewelry. It's said that the necklace has the power to open doorways to other worlds and that there were actually two necklaces. However, years before the Ancient Ones vanished, it disappeared and is now rumored to reside in another dimension all together. A dimension that lies parallel to their own.
Ridiculous…it's nothing more than a weathered and particularly gaudy piece of jewelry.
“No excuses.” Serphy responded in a stern voice.
Heidiki could only watch on in silence as Serphy once again turned to the others. Although he was unable to see the snake's face, he knew which expression he was wearing. In fact, he knew the expression too well - and it was frightening. The wolf was very well aware of how protective Serphy is over Kat, but no one, not even Murosaki and Kuruko deserve that look.
Hell, not even Ideserve that look!
It was time to intervene. “Now, now love. No need to overreact, we would have done the same.”
“I'm not overreacting! It was far too dangerous to have caused all that raucous right in the middle of human territory. And these two,” Serphy snarled as Murosaki and Kuruko were driven giddy with pride, “went ahead and blew our cover. Now we won't be able to travel though this land unnoticed, because now the humans are aware of us. They'll be on the look out for demons and it's all their fault!”
The two demons in question at least had the decency to look somewhat sheepish. It's true that traveling would from this point on become slightly problematic, but it was a risk that they had already accepted as soon as they stepped foot in human lands. It was also a known fact that the dog and lizard demon don't exactly create trouble, they just attract it. And Kat, as usual, fell victim to his own curiosity and the demons' mastered ability of persuasion.
He never had a chance
Kat stepped closer looking absolutely miserable. Serphy hadn't been this mad since that time Heidiki gambled his freedom away to Leo, a lion demon…and brothel owner of the red-light district's finest. It took quite a bit of negotiating, but in the end, Heidiki was once again a free wolf.
Yeah, that was bad
And to put it more simply, Serphy was pissed. “I'm sorry Serphy.” Kat mumbled while staring down at his feet.
Serphy just sighed and Heidiki watched as his glare diminished. Serphy always did have a soft spot for the half breed child. After all it was both he and Serphendias who set out looking for him as soon as the stars notified them of his birth. Once found, Serphy took the abandoned child in as his own. And Heidiki was there almost every step of the way.
Half breed children were rare and nearly unheard of. They're regarded as abominations and rejected by both humans and demons. Even Serphendias, the powerful Snake Prince of the Northern Mountains was criticized for his actions. However, he has very little tolerance for such disrespect and even went so far as to eat a few of his critics - humans and demons alike - the same way he used to dispose of his human lovers in the past after a night of passion. There's one fact about Serphy that holds true to this day, when it comes to despising others, he doesn't discriminate.
“Apology accepted. Now come on, lets get back on the trail. If we hurry we can make it back to my territory in just a couple of days.” Serphy said firmly after quickly ruffling Kat's long black hair.
Kat, about nineteen years of age, quickly began to cheer up now reassured that Serphy was no longer upset. Heidiki quickly stepped forward bringing his hands together. “Right! Now that we've got that bit settled and tucked away, let's get a move on loves.”
Serphy just nodded his head in agreement, just as Murosaki rushed forward to keep the others from leaving the room. “Wait! What about the necklace?”
“What about it?” Serphy snarled. Kuruko appeared beside Murosaki looking just as anxious, “We've come all this way, so…why don't we take it with this?”
Heidiki could have sworn he saw hope in those reptilian eyes and heard almost a pleading note in the lizard's voice. Serphy on the other hand just looked as stubborn as ever.
“Why?” was the blunt reply. The two other demons looked absolutely scandalized and for once, speechless. “But we've come all this way!” Kat suddenly just blurted out and the two demons began nodding their heads vigorously.
Heidiki just shook his head, smirking slightly at the antics taking place before him. He reached out and gave a Serphy's shoulder a gentle squeeze. “They've got a point Serphy, it'd be a waste. At the very least we could probably pick up a nice price for it.”
Serphy just gazed around the room from one face to another before sighing in defeat.
Damn…
“Fine,” Serphy declared, “you all win. We'll take the necklace.” Just as the words left his mouth Murosaki and Kuruko leaped up into the air with shit-eating grins spread across their faces. “We'll get it!”
“NO!” Serphy's hands shot out and tugged both of them back. “I'll go get it.” the snake declared sternly.
After releasing them Serphy turned back into the room and began making his way over to the chest. Now in front of the aged item the snake kneeled down in order to get a better look at the necklace with the ability to create entry ways from one world to the next.
Heh, just looks like a necklace to me
Serphy finally shook his head and reached out his hand. Once his fingers closed around the Ancient necklace, all hell broke loose.
