Chapter 5

The Shire

There was always a Baggins living in Bag End. But now, since Bilbo and Frodo had passed to the West, never to return to Middle Earth again, the Gamgees became the heirs to Bag End (Lobelia Sackville-Baggins had given it up and shortly after, passed away). Other than that fact, the Shire remained the same, and the people in it were still the same. Change came slowly in the Shire, that is, if it came at all, as an old Bilbo had been quoted to say often.

Frodo sat in front of Bag End watching the sun go rise above the Shire. He had received a letter from Gandalf a few days before stating that he and his friend, Faramir Took (Pippin's son) should head out for Weathertop as soon as he possibly was able to.

My dear friend, Frodo Gamgee,

I contact you now at a time of certain emergency. Elrond has called a council in Rivendell to deal with an imposing evil threat. I, reluctantly, have been asked to summon hobbits play a role in this ordeal. Although I would not like to see any threat come to you, my orders come from Elrond. He demands that the hobbits be included [He admires hobbits now for their strength and endurance. That is something you can thank your father, Peregrin Took, and Meriadoc Brandybuck specifically for]. If you can make the journey, you must head straight to Weathertop by the Eve of March 19, by Shire reckoning. If you are wondering where I may be at the moment, I am in Lothlorien gathering representatives from The Fair Lady Galadriel. I am ever so sorry for getting you involved in this mess. Hopefully I will be able to convince Elrond to not include you in any actions that might follow the council. Hope to see you soon.

An old friend,

Gandalf

Faramir was already willing and ready to leave for Weathertop, but Frodo was not. He, like his father, would miss gardening and, above all else, the Shire itself. He weighed the options in his mind and, everytime, the Shire came out on top. It wasn't until he got advice from his father that he changed his mind and decided to go.

"Why not go?" his father, Samwise Gamgee (at the age of 103), asked tending the flowers near the entrance to Bag End. "I'll tend to your garden and make sure everything stays the same.

"I will go," Frodo decided. "I could use a nice holiday, anyways."

"Be careful at Weathertop. We met some nasty monsters there. Wraiths that could only be defeated if they were engulfed in flame," was his father's reply.

After Frodo had left, Sam muttered, "If I know any of Gandalf's business, this will be anything but a holiday for them." With that, he continued tending to the flowers.

[Extended the chapter a bit, again. Sorry for the delay, but I have been busy as of late. Bare with me, please.

Azriel Dragontar- I feel I have to leave you something, hm…I leave ideas so that you can get to updating Stargaze. ^_^
