Chapter 1: Phone Call
"God, what's up with that girl and black?" a girl named Candy Richardson stated, looking at a girl across the cafeteria during lunch. She was with her usual group of "in" friends. Their main topic today was a girl named Cassy Lang. And a boy named Andrew. Cassy happened to be a girl who was unpopular, liked dark colours, and excelled in the arts and school. Andrew happened to be a boy who was popular, liked colours that just suited him, and hated the idea of homework. Girls loved talking about him, especially Candy. She had her eye on him ever since middle school, and was planning to soon catch him.
"Why should we care? Geeze Candy, you don't need to worry about her. How's she gonna ruin your plan of getting Andrew?" Lacey Carltan asked.
"I don't know, but I just hate her. She always gets A's but she is such a freak! What a little teacher's pet!"
"Who's a teacher's pet?" a boy said behind Candy. All heads turned around and faced the boy named Andrew.
"Hi Drew!" the girls said in unison, "We were just talking about that girl, Cassy Lang, the teacher's pet."
"Why would she be a teacher's pet? All she does is do well in school and the arts. What, are you guys picking on her or something?"
"No, actually we weren't!" Candy quickly fibbed, "We were actually admiring how well you dress, Drew! It's so handsome and attractive."
"Okay then," he said as he left. He walked passed Cassy and glanced at her. Always has her nose in a book, he thought as he got in the lunch line. Why doesn't she have any friends? He stopped staring at her and started thinking about how the band was going to get a gig. He was in a band called "SoCo" named after their favorite rock band, "Something Corporate". Something Corporate had also come from Southern California and their lead singer was named Andrew too. He looked again at where Cassy was sitting, and there she was, reading a new book. God, how fast does that girl go through a book? he asked himself as he was paying the lunch lady. He soon forgot about Cassy as he sat down to eat lunch with his friends Josh, Will, Brian, and Kevin. Brian and Kevin, being the pranksters and jokers easily got him thinking about other things.
"Andrew, please stay after class," Mrs. Alpert requested as the class was over. Man! Class is over and I wanna get home and practice the new song! Andrew complained in his head.
"Oooooooo," everybody said, all except Cassy, as they left the room. She was always the last person to get out of classrooms because everybody pushed her out of the way and didn't care about her.
"Yes, Mrs Alpert?" he said as he walked up to her desk. He was quite puzzled and you could tell by the look on his face.
"Andrew, I am a bit worried about your grade in this class."
"Yeah, and so are my parents."
"Andrew. I'm afraid, you might need to have someone tutor you."
"Tutoring!? Nobody gets tutors anymore! Do I have too? Well, if I do, can it be a cute girl?"
"Very funny. No, I am assigning you to Ms. Cassy Lang. She excels in this class and would be very helpful."
"Her? Why not Lexie? She's cute!"
"Don't complain Mr. Andrew. And anyways, I'm afraid Cassy needs to be more social. You could help her in that."
"Oh goody!" he muttered as he left. Oh, great! There's Candy at my locker! When will she ever leave me alone?
"Hi Drew! What was that all about?"
"Stuff," he replied bluntly. Why did she need to know about his business?
"Well, anyways, have you heard about Kacey's party this weekend? Maybe we could go together!"
"I don't know. Let me think about it," he said as he slammed his locker door. Truthfully, he didn't want to go with Candy.
"Okay, then call me!" she said, and without asking, she wrote her number on the palm of his hand.
"Whatever."
"Hello?" said a girl's voice on the other end of the receiver.
"Hi, this is Andrew Parish. Is Cassy Lang there?"
"Yes, this is her," the girl said sternly.
"Oh, sorry. I don't here you talk much."
"It's okay. What was it that you needed?"
"Uh, well, uh…"
"I hope it's not asking me out. It had better not be."
"Well, it wasn't. Look, Mrs. Alpert said that she was assigning you to tutor me. Did she mention that to you?"
"Oh yeah, she told me about last week on Friday. So, you to raise your grade in Science?"
"Well, duh."
"When do you want to start? I am open every afternoon except from 3:30 pm to 5:15 pm."
"What happens during that time?"
"Why do you need to know?"
"No, I was just wondering. How about 6:00 to 7:30? I got band practice after school too."
"Fine. But some days I might have to cancel because I baby sit."
"You baby sit? You actually baby sit?"
"Yeah, why do you care?"
"Nevermind. See you at school tomorrow and 6:00 I guess."
"Whatever." And there was the sound of a phone being hung up.
"What a nice talker," Andrew said to himself, sarcastically.
