Chapter 5: Over Night
Throughout the drive home, there was total silence between Cassy and Andrew. Neither of them could look at each other in the eye. When they tried it was a usual quick glance and then they would turn their heads the other way. Cassy was still drunk but did know what had happened before they both left the party. You kissed him, Cassy! Do you believe it? Andrew Chammon was your first kiss and you were drunk, Cassy's mind was saying again and again.
"Well…hope you had a good time…er….bye," Andrew said a bit hesitantly. Cassy could notice that he was troubled over this "incident" and all she could do was nod a bit.
"Yeah…see ya," she replied as she opened the car door. As she tried to step out of the car, from her drunkenness, she more slumped out of it than step out!
"Oof! Ouch, my foots stuck…," she said as she struggled.
"Cassy, are you okay?! Here, lemme help you," Andrew said as he ran over to her, "Man, you're more drunk than I thought. I'll help you to the door." He more like dragged her than walk her and as she was going inside she passed out! Luckily, Andrew was right behind her to catch her.
"Cassy? Cassy? Wow, what alcohol can do to this girl," he said out loud in amazement. As he carried her inside, he thought to himself Boy she's light!.
"Hello? Mr. And Mrs. Lang? Are you home?" There was no answer. The house was quiet and empty. And dark too.
"So this is what she has to live with. All by herself with no feeling of being a member of a real family," Andrew thought out loud. He decided to take her to her room and stay there until her parents came home. If they ever did.
"Hello? Mom?" Andrew asked as he called home.
"Andrew? Are you still at the party? When are you coming home?" said a kind female voice on the end of the receiver.
"Is it okay if I stay over at Josh's house tonight? It's Saturday too."
"That's fine with me. As long as know where you are I am not worried."
"'Kay. Love ya mom."
"Love you. Bye."
"Bye, see you tomorrow morning."
He went upstairs to check on Cassy, who was still sound asleep. He went back downstairs and sat on the couch and tried to stay awake until Cassy's parents came home but they never came. So, he instantly fell asleep.
The next morning, he woke up to find himself still on the couch in Cassy's house. He almost forgot where and why he was there. I wonder if Cassy is up, he wondered.
"Cassy? Are you awake?" he asked as he knocked on her bedroom door. He heard a yes on the other side and opened it.
"Good morning," she said as she was painting on a canvas in her art studio quarter in her room.
"Er…morning. Uh, what are you painting?"
"You asleep on the couch."
"Really?"
"No." From this statement he could tell she definitely herself again and awake.
"What are you really painting?"
"A ballet class. Like Edgar Degas but a bit more detailed."
"Wow! That is just….wow!" It looked just like a photograph. He couldn't believe it that she painted it.
"Really? Is it that good? Thanks! Now I know that I want to frame it and give it to my ballet teacher. It's a tradition at my school. After a performance you can give your teacher a gift to show your appreciation."
"Hold on a second. You take ballet? Is that what you do in that 3:30 pm to 5:15 pm time period?"
"Well, yeah. I have to pay for my classes though but sometimes I don't have to pay as much because I sometimes work there and the little dance store they own too. Just to help out."
"Dude. Hey, did your parents ever come home from work?"
"They don't come home Saturday nights," Cassy answered quickly and bluntly.
"You don't really feel like you're part of a family do you?" he asked seeing that it was true from the look on her face, "Oh! I'm sorry. I guess I shouldn't have asked that."
"Nah, it's okay. Without them, I became more responsible and independent. But it's true. They only real mothers I've had are my nannies but they're gone now."
"But from all of this, you've never drank until now? Or do drugs or smoked? Wow!"
"Well, with my parents being doctors, that'd be hard to get it past them if I ever did."
"But you said they were never ever really there for you."
"I don't know…they're my parents. They do their best to take care of me though they aren't home most of the time. But I forgive them. I mean, they are my mom and dad aren't they? And they've made up for it. Well, once."
"Boy…whoa! Look at the time! I've got to get home or mom will get worried. See you tomorrow at school!" he said as he left. When she heard the bang of the door closing, Cassy changed the painting with another that was unfinished. One of a girl graduating with two loving parents. It was of her hope that her parents will be there to see her happily graduate from high school.
