Usagi Memories

It was the end of the school year at Usagi Elementary School. The sakura trees in full bloom and their light pink petals floated around on the warm summer breeze in the school yard.

Inside the building the students are waiting for their year books so they can leave for summer vacation.

"Alright everyone, settle down and get back to your seats please." Said the teacher of a grade six class.

"Yes Miss Moriko!" The class said together to their green-haired, blue-eyed teacher. Within moments, the class was seated.

"Has anyone seen Zan?" The teacher asked.

"She's handing out year-books, ma'am." Said a boy with midnight black hair and fiery red eyes.

"Thank you Sam."

Meanwhile, in one of the grade five classrooms.

"Mr. Yamori! No passing notes in class! Now, give me that note."

"Alright…" Yuki Yamori hands the teacher the note that he was about to give to his best friend Nanashi Yujiso.

"Now…let me read this…it's a 'love' letter."

"Wait! Don't read it!" The teacher ignores Yuki and silently reads the note. Suddenly, as the teacher finishes reading the note, his eyes widen and he says, "Mr. Yamori, Mr. Yujiso, I'll see you after class!" Nanashi's head snaps up when he hears him name.

"But what did I do?" He asked.

"You'll find out after class." With that, the teacher returns to the front of the classroom.

Yuki slouches in his chair and sticks out his pierced tongue out at the teacher's back. Yuki's piercings are all acts of rebellion against his father. His parents had gotten a divorce a few years ago and Yuki was forced to live with him. He detests his father. So he does things that he knows his father will disapprove of. So far, he pierced his tongue, eyebrow, his ear and gotten a few tattoos that his cousin did for him.

Frustrated at his teacher, he blows some of his silver hair out of his golden-yellow eyes and begins re-writing his note. Nanashi on the other hand, was too busy trying to figure out what could have been on the note that would get him in trouble. Tightening his dark red headband around his forehead and hiding the knot back under his pitch-black hair. Closing his green-yellow eyes, Nanashi lays his head on his desk so he can rest for a few moments.

"Hey! Nashi, wake up!" Nanashi raised his head at the sound of his best friend calling him by his nick-name.

"You're lucky you're my best friend or else I wouldn't let you call me that." Yuki smirks at him.

"You wouldn't be able to do anything to stop me if I wasn't."

"Whatever. What do you want?"

"Sorry for getting you in trouble and…don't you have to pick up your sister today?"

"Oh crap! I forgot about that. Thanks."

"No problem." Then, a girl with long blonde hair and golden eyes walks over and sits next to them.

"Hey guys. What was on that note Yuki?"

"None of your business Kin."

"Oooohhhh! So it was a love note. Heh, you should be more careful. Who were you going to give it to, huh?"

"No one and it wasn't a love note."

"Sure, sure. Whatever you say." Kin said in a friendly, joking tone.

"You two are so strange."

"You're one to talk Nanashi. You and all your martial arts stuff."

"Oh be quiet." Nanashi said, glaring half-heartedly at the blonde.

"Say, shouldn't you tell the teacher that you have to pick up your sister, Nashi?"

"Yeah. Mr. Takumi!" Nanashi called, raising his hand.

"What is it Nanashi?"

"I have to pick up my sister today, so I can't stay after school."

"Fine. Then you and Mr. Yamori can join me in the hallway, now." The teacher gets up from his desk and walks to the door.

"See you guys later." Kin said as the two boys made their way to the front of the classroom and out the door, into the hallway.

As soon as the door shut and the teacher, Nanashi and Yuki were outside, Kin and her friends, Rei and Yasu, rushed to the door to listen to the conversation.

Outside in the hallway, the teacher was reading the note once more before Nanashi spoke up.

"Sir, if this is about the note, then why am I out here?"

"Read it." The teacher hands Nanashi the note.

~Dear Nashi. Heh, don't you just looove your nick-name? It's so much easier to write than 'Nanashi'. Anyways, since the school year is almost out (just an hour or so left) and my stupid father is most likely moving us somewhere else (stupid baka thinks you're a bad influence or something) this may be the last chance I get to tell you this. I'm too chicken (yes I did say 'chicken' but that's only 'cause this is really important) to tell you out loud so I have decided to write it out on paper. Before I tell you, you have promise me something, don't get mad at me…this is hard for me to say but…I think I'm in love with you Nashi. Don't get scared. I know that you don't feel the same way so I would never do anything on purpose that would make you feel uncomfortable. I also know that we're only in grade five, but as I said…this may be my last chance to tell you. I had to tell you so that I wouldn't regret it later. If you don't feel the same way(which I know you don't) then don't be afraid to yell at me. Let it all out, I'll understand. Just…let me know how you feel. Your friend, Yuki Yamori.~

When Nanashi finished the letter, he dropped it to the ground.

"Nashi?" Yuki asked him. Nanashi turned to face him, tears threatening to fall down his face.

"I'm sorry Nashi…"

"I'll leave the two of you to sort this out. You have ten minutes, then I'll be back." The teacher then walks back into the classroom. Kin, Rei and Yasu had luckily made it back to their seats before he walked in.

"Nashi…please say something." Nanashi's tears then did fall. Silently they streamed down his face when he looked at his best friend.

"I…I have to go." Nanashi runs off down the hallway, leaving Yuki standing alone.
