Reflection
Faith sat alone in her room, preparing for her college life ahead. She'd already packed her clothes for it, as well as her sheets for the dorm bed. Now she had to choose whether or not to take the pictures she'd taken of her and Hiroshi.
She sat on her bed, holding the one of the two of them at the Valentine's Dance back in their freshman year of High School, when they'd started going out. They had seemed so happy. It was all because of the mirror. And then, last year, he'd asked her to marry him. Everything would have gone well…
No. She must not think of this. The group had split up at the end of high school, and the mirror had been covered. There was no going back to the other world, where they were all half animal. She'd go to college and leave it all behind for a few years, then she'd come home and raise Mikomi, her beautiful daughter…
The only thing about Mikomi she didn't like was that she wasn't Hiroshi's child. She was Oki's. It had been when Faith was grieving. Oki had come to her for comfort, and then…things had just escalated, and the next thing Faith knew, she was pregnant. She didn't mind that Mikomi was the daughter of the fish boy, but she missed Hiroshi.
“…It's all because of that mirror…I'll destroy it, that's it…” Faith muttered to herself, then realized that none of this would have happened if they hadn't been horsing around in the attic and Usagi had accidentally pushed Faith through the mirror into the other world.
Since then, the gang had grown tighter, gotten new members—the fish boy, Oki, the wind girl, Mai, the fiery twins, Gin and Kin, the rock boy who reminded everyone of Usagi, Haru, and his little sister, the flower girl, Hana—and then, they had split up. She didn't understand it. Maybe, without their adventures in the other world, they didn't need to be a big group anymore.
Usagi and Haru still hung out with each other, mainly because they were boyfriend and girlfriend, and Oki kept visiting to see his little girl. He was genuinely sorry that Hiroshi was gone, yes, but he was also happy; he'd always loved Faith. Hana still played with Faith's albino sister Yuki, every day, and they were still in school together. Mai and Kana were still best friends, too, and they were working through their last years of college already. The twins, Gin and Kin, had become performers who could do amazing things with fire. Ayame, the mute friend of Faith's was going out for a teaching job—sign language for the mute and deaf.
Blanca hadn't been heard from since Faith had covered the mirror up and moved it back up to the attic. So who knew if she had faded out of existence, or had somehow returned to her life as a winged white tiger? Faith didn't care. It didn't matter, anyway. She was never going back there.
So, then, why did she find herself standing in front of it, ready to pull the shroud off of it? There were very few thoughts that come to mind that answered the question. And they were true.
She needed to face what had happened. She needed to figure out where it had gone wrong. And she needed to face her fears so she could successfully move on in her life.
Faith's heart was pounding in her chest as she reached up and pulled back the dusty shroud. Her reflection didn't speak to her, like it had when it had been Blanca. It was still, her. She reached up, placing her hands on the cold glass. She didn't' go through at all. So she bit her lip and pushed on it. And fell through.
As she caught her balance and looked around, her white tiger ears twitched, searching for familiar sounds, her light blue wings folded and unfolded, and her tiger tail swished back and forth.
Then, she saw where she was: exactly where she had left last time. The frozen northlands of the mirror world were before her. It was exactly as she had left them, a year before. Untouched by time. Blood still stained the ice and snow. And there, before her, was the mangled corpse of her beloved Hiroshi, reaching out, pain still in his soft, brown eyes, wolf ears pinned back, one ripped and bloody, his wonderful, brown tail in pieces.
Memories flooded back into her mind, the memories she had been trying to hide from herself for a whole year. She fells to her knees, the white material of her baggy, Vietnamese-like pants blending with the snow. Tears were falling from her crystal blue eyes, even though they froze in the arctic winds before they hit the ground…
Kara: All right, I know I'm evil. No lemon in this chapter for you guys. X3 Instead, I gave you some sadness that sets the stage for the story. The following chapters will almost all have lemons, and almost all will be memories over Faith's high school years. Except for the Epilogue, which will be all happy…X3
Hiro: You…You…killed…me…?
Kara: It made a great sad part! ><;
Hiro: I'll kill you!
Kara: No, you won't. I own you. X3
