Sheik threw a Deku Nut onto the ground, but as the cloud of smoke surrounded them, they discovered that they were still in the same spot.

“Oh no, what's wrong?!” Malon worried.

“I think your friend must be very far away. We'll have to use two Deku Nuts for it. But keep in mind this is our last one. Are you sure that's where you want to go?”

Malon paused for a minute, carefully contemplating the consequences. “Yes.”

“Very well, then.” Sheik tossed yet another Deku Nut on the ground and they found themselves standing in a farm-like setting with a small horse pen outside.

Malon excitedly jolted over to a beautiful brown-and-white mare she had claimed as her best friend those many years ago. Clasping her arms around the horse's neck, she cheered in joy.

“Who is this little bugger?” Sheik asked as he patted the horse on the nose.

“It's Epona, my best friend in the whole world! I haven't seen her for years!”

“What is she doing here?”

“She's Link's horse now.”

“I see. Do you want her back?”

“Yes…but Link probably still needs her.”

“Show me to this `Link' you speak of.” Sheik demanded.

“I don't know where he is-“ Malon's voice was cut out by the sound of a squeaky door opening.

“What are you two doing with my horse?” the man asked.

“L-Link? Is…is that you?”

“Malon?! W-what…what are you doing here?!” the man queried in surprise.

“Aren't you happy to see me, Linky?!” Malon threw her arms around the man and squeezed him tight. “I CAN'T BELIEVE I FOUND YOU!”

Sheik laid his eyes upon Link, looking fairly perturbed.

“Zelda?!” Link exclaimed.

“Huh? Zelda is in Hyrule. I was going to meet with her, but I didn't get the chance.” Malon explained.

Sheik slowly shook his head `no' at Link while Malon wasn't looking, and Link, appearing a bit confused, nodded back in agreement.

“Oh, don't mind me, Malon! I like to kid around! Of course Zelda's not here, is she, Sheik?”

“Sheik, you know Link?!”

“Yes, I do.” Sheik mumbled under his breath. “Rather…misfortunate.”

“Misfortunate? If you know who Link is, then…you must know he is the Hero of Time!”

“That doesn't excuse his arrogance!” Sheik snapped.

“I don't get it. Do you two hate each other, or something?!” she asked.

“I don't get it either. Sheik and I know each other very well and we're great friends.” Link growled. “Isn't that right, Sheiky-poo?”

Sheik didn't reply, but instead made his trademark apathetic “hmph” sound.

“What is wrong with you two?! Now, Link, I need to ask you some questions.”

Sheik stuck his nose up in the air. “If anyone needs me, I'll be…exploring this land for a bit.” He dashed off, leaving Link and Malon alone.

“I've been waiting for so long.” She flashed her brightest smile at Link. “Why do you look so…guilty?”

“No reason!” Link replied nervously.

“I've wanted to talk to you.”

“Do you want to come inside first?” he pointed to the building and Malon nodded.

The two of them sat at the table, staring in one another's eyes.

“Where have you been all these years? I want to know everything.” Malon demanded.

“That's my personal business…”

“I DESERVE TO KNOW THE TRUTH!”

“Okay. Um…this place is called Romani Ranch. It's in this land, Termina. After I left for Hyrule, I ended up here when I was looking for Navi…”

“That fairy?”

“Yes. Anyway, I got here through the Lost Woods and had to save this land from a falling moon. After I saved it, I decided to leave…but then I returned here again. I didn't want to return to a land where no one would remember me. I didn't want to spend the rest of my childhood back in the Kokiri Forest where the kids would tease me again. I just didn't want to deal with anything, especially the princess.”

“You didn't want to deal with Princess Zelda? What's wrong with Zelda?”

Link quickly changed the subject. “So how have you been? Is Hyrule doing well?”

“There's something we need to talk about…fairy boy.”

He cringed at the old nickname Malon referred to him by when they were children in Hyrule.

“I've had a…crush on you for all these years. I always daydreamed of us growing up together, and you being there for me,” Tears began to fill her eyes. “But I never saw you again, and I was labeled crazy because nobody believed me about your existence!”

Link took a minute to soak it in. “I'm sorry.”

“I SPENT YEARS WITH THREE BOYS WHO RAPED ME A FEW DAYS AGO AT MY RANCH, AND THEY KILLED MY FATHER! I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH SO MUCH SHIT, AND IT'S ALL BECAUSE OF YOU! WHY COULDN'T YOU COME BACK TO HYRULE SO PEOPLE WOULDN'T THINK YOU WERE ONE OF MY HALLUCINATIONS?!”

He didn't know whether to comfort her, yell back at her, or just not respond at all. He opted for comforting her, until he suddenly found himself pressing his lips against hers.

Malon remained silent, letting her hero kiss her after years of waiting. This is what she wanted, wasn't it? Then why did she feel so guilty? It was probably because of one other person she also had feelings for…

“Do you want to go upstairs?” Link offered warmly.

Malon accepted and began to feel more guilt consume her. She knew she loved and craved two men; Link…and Sheik.
