Cloud woke up. He started to get up, but immediately, his injuries sapped his energy. He laid back down, inhaling deeply. His eyes swiveled along the cave. Nothing but rock. He sighed, exhaling all breath. Then his mind turned to the ship. Shoot. I wonder what happened to that thing. Suddenly, the sound of thunder filled ears. But it was followed by voices. “Damn. Its all wet,” came a deep, throaty voice.
“Don't worry sir. As long as we still have the bi-transporter, we'll be fine.”
“Shh, Seij senses someone.” Cloud tensed as a strange boy walked towards him from behind one of the cave's walls.
“Master Jasker! Do not worry it is just a boy. One who is injured,” said the older boy. He seemed to be in a trance. Cloud's brow furrowed as he looked into the boy's eyes. They furrowed even further as he noticed that boy's pupils weren't there. At all.
“Injured, you say? My boy, help him out!” said a different voice from the other two.
“Yes Master.” He reached down to Cloud. Truly, Cloud would've been unnerved, but he was too tired. He grasped the hand outstretched to help him. Seij, or at least that's what the men called him, lifted him straight off his feet once on his feet, he felt the ground ready to meet his head again. But before he fell, Seij caught him. He looked at the ground. Seij placed his arm around his head. He lifted Cloud, and in a “Band of Brothers” fashion, helped Cloud around the wall. What Cloud saw was a long oak table. 24 seats were to the left of the table, 25 on the other side. At head of the table was a grand seat. But the man seated there hid in the shadows. Behind the chairs on the left and the chairs on right, a single young adult stood behind each chair. Only the chair at the head had no special kid.
“Ms. Iyer, the boy has a broken ankle.” Seij was looking forward. Not any single person, just staring into space.
“I will see to that in just time Seij,” said a woman, still seated, but eyeing Cloud with curiosity.
“Well, well, this is truly new. A student who comes on his own!” came that British-accented third voice.
“Tell me boy, what are you doing here?” came the deep, throaty voice, which he heard first.
“Um I, well, I was on a ship, which, well, sunk in the storm,” said Cloud, not knowing why he told the truth.
“And tell me boy, do you have any parents?”
“N-no not at all.” Why did he stutter? He used to be proud to be free from the rules of a parent. There was something strange going on. And he wanted to know what it was.
“I see then… Have you ever wanted to go to a school?”
“Um, I'm not sure.” He planned to stay out of school this year, for the first time in his life. “Sure, it isn't half as bad as most say,” he answered politely.
“Then feel happy you're in one.”
“What?”
“Seij, if you don't mind, will you instruct this boy, as you have no purpose here as it is?”
“Of course, Principal.” Cloud thought, kind of conspicuous for a school.
“Listen to me, and listen well.” Cloud looked up. Seij was above him, taking out a thick pamphlet. They were in a closet, where there were papers all over the place. “Welcome to Surface Private High School” it said on the cover. “You need to read it to familiarize yourself with this school. The book carried all the same crap as all other schoolbooks. That stuff was easy to understand. “Well then, you seem familiar with the regular rules. Then it's time to give you the rules not stated in that book. No magic in the hallways. No attacking the teachers or staff, unless you're in gym. No leaving the school.”
“Magic?” asked Cloud. Magic wasn't real. No way this can be serious. This was all a joke. Well, maybe except for the last rule.
“It will be clear if you read the manual I am about to give you.” He threw a heavy book at Cloud. Cloud caught it, but was thrown back from the force. He fell back on his bad leg. He fell on some paper-clipped papers, with little photos attached to them. Then he thought he saw the most beautiful thing ever. The top photo sported a pink-haired girl, who looked just about his age. According to paper, the girl's name was “Haruno, Sakura”. I might wanna look her up, he thought. He began to get up, when Seij shouted “Be careful, some of those papers are still soggy!” Cloud paid special attention of where he stepped.
Eventually, while Cloud was reading the manual (with commentary by Seij), someone knocked on the door. “Seij, its me.” Cloud recognized the voice as the second voice he heard ever since being washed into this strange place.
“Master Jasker!” he said opened the door quickly, and standing up very still. “I'm sorry, sir I-“
“Please leave me and the boy here.” Seij, whose face became a bright red, walked out of the closet. Mr. Jasker closed door behind him. “You must understand my boy. I am on your side.” Cloud was now truly confused.
“What do you mean `on my side'?”
“Please just listen to me. I don't want you to react through voice, understood?”
“Um, uh, yes, you can trust me.”
“Good. This school… isn't just one of your regular two story little schools. You noticed those students standing behind our chairs?” Cloud thought for a minute. Yes, he did notice them. “They were all kidnapped to come here.” Now a real fear was welling up inside of him. “Originally, they all wanted to go, they all did. Then, they were noticed. Three-fourths, take it or leave it, of the students here come from different,” followed by a dramatic pause, or was he just listening for anyone else? “Dimensions. Those students, students like Seij, were brainwashed and hypnotized, as teachers chose them. These brain washed kids served one teacher with non-flawing obedience. If you or anyone of the friends you make ever plan to topple this school, they are your mortal enemies.”
“Why are you telling me this?” asked Cloud, who inwardly didn't want to talk about this.
“Because I see hope in you.”
“But, if you are a teacher, why are you helping the kids?”
“Because,” he said with emphasis, “They are building an army.”
“A-an army?” Now he was really scared. This must be some whacked up conspiracy!
