Chapter 1
Fire Meets Ice
Alura Springs, 18, sat down in a booth at a busy New York restaurant. She ordered some French vanilla cappuccino and folded her slender, yet nicely built, arms. She glanced at the TV and sighed; another report about Phoenix Blade. New York took her wrong; they thought she was a menace, but she only meant to help out the city with its crime. She tightened her black finger-less leather gloves she wore on her hands. Her fiery red eyes glared at the waitress that came by to give her the cappuccino. She nodded her head in thanks, her short layered brown hair bopping gently. She tapped her knee-length leather boots on the floor loudly and the four nearest tables glared at the girl. She smirked and pulled slightly on her short red tank top so that it covered her stomach alittle more; she had black low-ride jeans on and they really didn't help cover up.
People in the restaurant began to look from the picture of Phoenix Blade on the TV screen and then at Alura. She could see them whisper to each other and hear them talking about how much they looked alike. She quickly slid on her dark tinted shades (or sunglasses for all you people who use old-fashioned terms :P ). The part of her that gave her away the easiest was her eyes. She was the only one around New York with red eyes like hers.
It was funny how Alura came to being Phoenix Blade. When she was sixteen years old, she was sleeping one night and a fire started somehow--it still isn't known how. She never woke up till it was too late and she inhaled so much smoke that she should have died as the doctors said. Thankfully, a firefighter came into her room and carried her out before she was engulfed in flames. After that night, Alura could just glance at something and light it on fire if she wanted to. Her eyes changed into a fiery red, and they would ignite and look like real flames were in them when she went into Phoenix Blade-mode. Another thing about her was that she was a gymnast, making her very quick and stealthy. She could steal something right under someone's nose without them noticing, and if they did, she could slip away from them as if she had never tried in the first place. She was known to use poles and psychical gymnastics--flips, cartwheels, etc--to escape from police and other enemies.
On the TV, another person who apparently had super powers like her popped up on the screen. Alura sat up straighter and examined this girl. She had dark brown hair and green eyes. As a costume, she wore all white; versus Alura's all dark red. She wore a white spandex bodysuit with a curtain of white silk attached to the bottom of the arms. She wore white gloves, white boots, and a white mask that reminded her of Daredevil.
"This new super hero of New York calls herself Arctic Fox. Suits her well, if you ask me. Watch this video footage we caught of her using her actual super powers…"
A new image popped up on the screen. The girl who called herself "Arctic Fox" was chasing a man down the street. She held one hand out and two pillars made of ice shot out of the ground in front of the man, causing a huge backup in the busy New York City streets. She shot two more icicles at the man, pinning him against the pillars by his shirt sleeves. She approached him, but didn't hurt him. She only dug in his pockets and pulled out a compact wallet. She turned to a police man, who was approaching her. They exchanged conversation and the police officer took the wallet gratefully. The footage stopped and it returned to the reporter, who went on about how these two super humans may be rivals; fire and ice.
Alura got up and approached the door, leaving her cappuccino behind. She heard one of the waitresses yell at her to pay for it, and just as she said so, she sprinted out the door and down the street. She grinned as the employees couldn't catch her by a long shot. She grabbed a pole which she nearly slammed into and flipped a few times, then stopped herself and crouched on top of the pole. She grinned and, still gripping the pole, she let her legs drop again, only pulling herself back up like a gymnast and sending herself flying upward. She landed on one of the window sills of the building she flung herself up at. She opened the window and climbed in carefully, making sure no one saw her. She went into her room and pulled one of the paintings on the wall off, revealing a metal number pad. She punched in a code and the wall flipped around, revealing a whole collection of her costume and weapons.
She grabbed the skin-tight red leather pants and pulled them on as fast as she could. Then, she grabbed her matching skin-tight red leather long-sleeved shirt and pulled that on, zipping both the pants and the shirt up in the back. She pulled her boots off and replaced them with regular red shoes which were better for running and doing stunts. She pulled on her gloves, which matched the rest of her outfit. Last, but not least, she grabbed her knives and daggers which were all attached in sheathes to a black belt and strapped the belt to her waist tightly. She punched in another code and the wall turned around again to appear as a normal everyday wall. She hung the painting back up and rushed to the window where she came in. Her eyes blazed red like real flames, seeing every car at the bottom of the street. Her hair turned an ebony black and her skin began to turn a bit paler.
Phoenix Blade crept out of the window and shut it carefully behind her. Just as she was about to leap back down to the streets, she felt someone or something push her forward from behind. She lost her balance and fell, but grabbed the ledge before she could really begin to fall. She looked up on the ledge and there sat Artic Fox, crouching next to her window. "Get away from there!" She shouted angrily, pulling herself back up onto the ledge.
Artic Fox smiled and peered inside. "Nice home," She spoke, "Looks nice and comfortable for a villain like you." She grabbed the window to pull it open, but she was taken aback when a ninja star missed her hands by not even a half an inch. "Alright, alright… I'll leave the window alone…"
"Get out of here! Now! I don't want you around my home now that you know that I live here!" Phoenix Blade shouted again, her hand gripping another star-shaped blade. She never did like it when people came near her home in fear that they might get some clue as to who she really was, but having Arctic Fox find it just infuriated her.
"Hold on…" Arctic Fox said, holding her hands up defensively. "We both need our privacy since we have super powers and use them for the good of the city. I see why you'd be defensive, but this is worse than defensive! Come on, I'm not going to kill you or anything you know. We're kind of like sisters-"
"What?" Phoenix was near outraged by the words Arctic Fox spoke. "Sisters? How are we like sisters? Just curious to know…" She added.
Arctic Fox looked more serious this time. "We both have super human powers, like I said. We both use it for the good of New York and the rest of the world. We may be fire and ice, opposites, but we have more in common than you think."
"Point being?"
"We should stick together…Be a team until we meet more of our kind, and then invite them into the team as well…"
Silence.
"You're kidding…right?" Phoenix never thought being given these powers meant she had to team up with people that had the same problem. She'd rather do it alone than with other people. But what if she ran into problems…? "Oh, fine…"
"Alright! I'll show you where I plan to make our meeting spot, come on!" Arctic Fox sprung off the ledge, grabbed the pole Phoenix had just been on and flung herself up on the roof of the next building. Phoenix sighed and leapt down after her, following her every movement.
This was going to be a long day…
