Chapter 5
A show of splendor-
Trunks's power is unmatched!
The forest that surrounded Kilika was amazingly cool and beautiful when it wasn't embraced by the red heat of pain. Yuna had healed Trunks's injuries, leaving him only mildly achy. The boy now realized how foreign a world he really was on-he'd never seen any of the plants that surrounded him. He kept close to Tidus, who seemed to be (at least as far as Trunks could tell) in the same shoes-lost in some odd world. Trunks could tell this even more from the way Tidus looked at everything. It was with the same wide eyes that Trunks used. There were a lot of monsters wandering the forest, disappearing into the underbrush only to appear from behind to surprise them all. For the most part, Trunks sat back and let his companions do the fighting. He didn't feel much like fighting at present, and besides, they were doing fine on their own. What made him feel kind of ill was the fact that they seemed so pleased with their weak power. Trunks was pretty sure that Goten's mom could beat up most of them, and she was way weaker than he was. Trunks followed them, watching them battle, admiring the plant life. At one point Wakka gave him a cynical look.
"Thought you said you were strong."
Trunks shrugged.
"Yeah, but these guys are weak. It wouldn't be fair."
The group proceeded through the forest, eventually coming to a large staircase, where the group decided to have a race. Again, Trunks stood back, letting the group have their fun. He didn't see much sense in ruining their fun… But that fun suddenly turned into a battle that Trunks could finally find worthy of his attention. Yuna won the race (she cheated, of course), but when she reached the top, she found a huge creature waiting for her. Horrified, she let out a scream.
"Sinspawn!!!!"
Trunks had felt it before she'd screamed. An enormous surge of unbridled hatred slammed into Trunks's ki, catching his attention immediately. He had just turned to shout a warning when he heard the scream. Cursing, Trunks flew up the staircase, landing in front of a petrified Yuna. The monster was big enough, and its ki felt pretty strong, but not strong enough. Trunks looked up at the monster, his eyes narrowed. He hovered up to be level with it, glaring.
"Have you seen Goten?!"
If Trunks could have seen the looks on the faces with his friends when he flew up to the monster and asked it where his friend was, he would have been amused. The creature responded by striking at him sluggishly. Trunks easily avoided the attacks, but couldn't avoid a more lethal method of attack. The creature struck him with a torrent of pain that Trunks could not avoid. It knocked him to the ground, and thoroughly pissed him off. The boy stood up, brushed himself off, feeling annoyed.
"That was a cheap shot, y'know." He said scornfully. The creature flailed unknowingly at him, hitting Trunks's arm. Aggravated, Trunks reached up and caught the creature's appendage, and easily ripped it off (the party all took a step back at seeing this). Trunks glared at the creature, then shook his head.
"I thought this was worth my time." He scoffed, then tossed its arm aside. "How could you just let your arm go like that? Are you really trying, or are you just weak?"
The beast shook its head angrily, lunging at Trunks. Trunks evaded easily, then sighed.
"Why do I even bother talking to you? I thought that bad guys were supposed to be at least remotely intelligent!" He brought his hand up, shaking his head. "I'm gonna put you out of your misery, okay? Try not to look at the light." He let lose a moderate blast of energy, knocking the monster over. Spirit energy exploded into the air as the creature dissolved into nothingness. Trunks blinked.
"That was unusual." He sighed, shaking his head. He turned back to his friends, who were all staring at him wide eyed. Trunks blinked. "What?"
Tidus stepped forward.
"What was that?!"
Trunks shrugged.
"I told'ja that I was strong."
Wakka glared at him.
"Then why didn't ya help us before?!"
Trunks smiled.
"I didn't want to make you feel bad… I mean… You guys are pitiful!"
Lulu scowled at him.
"I would hardly call our performance pitiful."
Trunks smiled again.
"Keep telling yourself that, Ms. Lulu. I'm sure you guys'll become stronger with practice. You're just not on my level! I'm training for the Budokai Martial Arts Tournament, you know." He smiled proudly. "My Papa's trainin' me. Sure, he says that I'll never be on his level, but he'll see! After all, I'm stronger at age eight than he was at thirty! Of course I'll be stronger! I bet the future me is stronger than everyone!" (Somewhere in the future, GT Trunks is facing a powerful baddie and is watching little Goku kick the crap out of it. He sneezes, then screams as he's nearly hit by a beam.)
Tidus blinked at Trunks, surprised. Yuna smiled and knelt next to Trunks.
"Thank you very much, Trunks." She said, smiling. "You're an amazing fighter. Someday, when you're old enough, you'll make an excellent Guardian."
Trunks shook his head.
"I don't think so. I'll be home by then." But somehow, his heart didn't agree. And even if he did… What would he tell Goten's family…? He shook the thoughts away again. "But I can help guard you, Yuna." He said, trying to sound as sweet as possible. He wanted to stay with this small group as long as he could… He couldn't bear the thought of being alone again…
Yuna laughed softly.
"You… Want to be my Guardian?"
Trunks nodded.
"Can I be? Please? I can make sure that Sin doesn't bother you." Trunks smirked, pounding his fist into his palm. "He doesn't scare me. I'll make confetti out of him, just like I did his little friend here!"
Yuna blinked, then looked to the others. Wakka shrugged, and Lulu spoke softly.
"It's your decision, Yuna."
Yuna nodded.
"Then I've made a decision." She smiled at Trunks. "You may be my Guardian. But…" She added. "If we find your parents, or someone that recognizes you, you have to promise to at least ask their permission."
Trunks let out a whoop, hopping into the air.
"Yahoo! No problem!"
Tidus blinked at him again, then spoke up.
"How did you fly like that?"
Trunks stopped, and then turned to Tidus. He realized his mistake. He had flown… His mother had warned him repeatedly that people would not understand how he was capable of flight, and that he should try not to do it in front of strangers. He grinned shyly, tugging on his shirt.
"Um… Magic. I use it when I fight."
The group seemed to understand that. Trunks relaxed. It seemed as though he may be okay after all.
