Chapter 7:

"Hey why do you look so grumpy, my dear cousin?" Rinoa asked Seifer as she made her way into the cosy little kitchen of her
house. "Shouldn't you be happy? You passed all the exams and everything..." the girl wondered aloud and opened the fridge.
Seifer said nothing and just seated himself at the dinner table. He was staying over at Rinoa's house, for the girl's parents were
spending their free weekend at the family cottage.

"Oh my favourites!" Rinoa exclaimed as she picked up a plate of chocolate cookies from the fridge. "Want some?" she asked
with a cheerful smile on her face. Seifer just gave the girl a nod, not even bothering to see what his cousin was offering. Rinoa
put the cookie-plate on the small, round dinner table and sat down. She picked one up and began to nibble it from the edges.

"Rinoa? I wanna tell you--ah...nothing..." Seifer began, but decided it was best just to shut up. Rinoa's dark brows began to knit
together when she saw the look on Seifer's face.

"That's it Seifer. What the hell's with you?" Rinoa exclaimed. "You've been acting like that for a week now!"

Seifer blinked his green eyes, looking a bit annoyed. "Like what??" he asked, tracing his long scar with his index finger.

"Like you've got something on your conscience and you're just dying to get it out."

Seifer frowned and tried to avoid Rinoa's gaze. "...I have no idea what you're talking about!" the blonde denied, but the look on
his face told his cousin he was obviously lying.

"Spill it!" Rinoa ordered and leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms over her chest. After a moment of wriggling in his own
chair, Seifer finally sighed and met the girl's brown eyes.

"Fine....I'll tell you...but you'll probably hate me after hearing it..." The blonde boy mumbled and picked up a cookie from the
plate. Instead of eating it, he just twiddled it with his fingers.

"Oh but I already do Seifer. Don't you remember what you did to my marzipan-piggy collection when I was seven!? You ate
it!" Rinoa reminded, narrowing her eyes. Seifer chuckled as he remembered the incident, but became serious before Rinoa
could smack him.

"...This is different..." the blonde began and lowered his gaze, unable to look Rinoa in the eye. The girl remained silent and
waited for his cousin to continue. "I did something to Squall." Seifer finally managed to say. Rinoa blinked her eyes and put the
cookie aside.

"The guy from across the street?" she asked and received a faint nod from Seifer. The look on Rinoa's face became serious as
she suddenly realised she hadn't seen Squall in school during the past week. "Seifer?...W-what did you do to the guy??" she
asked, the tone of her voice filled with suspicion. "...You didn't hurt him or anything like that?"

Seifer blinked his eyes nervously and lowered himself down in the chair, feeling the need to disappear under the table. His long
legs however, prevented him from getting out of sight. "I did...kinda...a little...maybe..." he admitted, his voice almost
unnoticeable. The blonde could feel Rinoa's brown eyes fixed on him as he continued his confession. "...I tried to...to force him
to have sex with me!" he finally exclaimed, unable to make himself use the word 'rape'. "But before you lecture me and tell me
what a horrible person I am, I want you to know I feel awful about what I did!"

Rinoa's eyes went wide as saucers, but all she could do was stare. The kitchen was quiet and the only sound came from the
clock above the fridge. Seifer could hear the sound of his beating heart in his ears as he finally dared to look his cousin in the
eye. Rinoa was speechless. All she could do was stare in disbelieve.

"...I didn't actually do anything to him...physically I mean...just a few kisses...." Seifer tried to defend himself and maybe make
himself feel less guilty. "...But I bet I scared the hell out of him and probably scarred him for life."

The blonde stood up and walked over to the kitchen window. He could see Squall's house across the street. There were no lights
on, which made him feel uneasy. "Ah Rin, I've been worried sick all week! Why hasn't he been in school? H-have you seen
him? He is your neighbour and all..." The girl didn't answer him, but came to stand behind his back. Seifer turned around and
swallowed as he saw the despising look on his cousin's face.

"Seifer...why?" Rinoa finally asked. Seifer lowered his gaze, knowing what the girl meant.

"I guess....because I like him." The blonde mumbled. Rinoa blinked her eyes in disbelieve.

"What? Seifer, what?? You like the guy and show it with an attempted rape??" she exclaimed.

"Well you know! I-I can't fall for a geek! I'm one of the popular ones..." Seifer stammered as he tried to defend himself. He
leaned against the sink as Rinoa took a step forward.

"I can't believe I'm hearing this...Are you really that shallow? ...You like someone you're 'not supposed to', and think that
maybe the feelings will go away if you...you rape him??" the raven-haired girl raged. Seifer blinked his green eyes nervously
and tried hard to swallow the lump of guilt, forming in his throat.

"H-hey! You're making me the bad guy here!" the blonde exclaimed.

"Well Seifer, that's because you are." Rinoa noted, her brown eyes narrowed with anger.

"Am not! ...M-Mike is...and Brad and Joey! I'm always the one who's taking care of Squall...well...kinda..." Seifer explained,
thinking Rinoa was attacking him like a damn prosecutor. "Rin, you should understand. I mean you're one of the popular ones, a
cheerleader, the president of the...the fashion club or whatever..."

"Your point being?" the girl inquired.

"Well what would you do if you'd wake up some day and realise you have feelings for ....for someone like Squall?" Seifer
explained, and blinked his eyes in confusion as the look on Rinoa's face suddenly became soft.

'Maybe I've broiled him enough already...' the girl reasoned, her usual smile returning onto her petite face.

"Seifer, is your status and reputation really that important to you?...More important than what you feel for Squall?" Rinoa
finally asked.

Seifer was quiet as he thought about what the girl had said. 'Yeah, is it? ...Yes?...No!...Hell, I don't know!' The blonde's lips
turned slightly upwards as the image of Squall came to his mind. ' ...He is damn cute...and his hair and all- just perfect. Makes
you wanna touch it. And the innocent look he has on his face when he's not frowning...even the frown looks good on him.'
Seifer blinked his eyes and came back from his thoughts.

"I-I guess...not." he admitted. Rinoa gave the blonde a pleased smile and looked out of the window.

"Does he know how you feel about him?" she continued with the questions. Seifer blinked his eyes nervously, feeling a faint
blush cover his cheeks.

"...Yeah, I kinda told him...ah Rin, let's just leave it! This is like some stupid girl-talk...I have better things to do!" the blonde
groaned, knowing where Rinoa was going with her questions. Before Seifer could leave the kitchen however, Rinoa grabbed
him by the sleeve of his black sweater.

"Seifer. You gotta go over there and apologise." The girl said firmly, not allowing his cousin to escape the situation. The blonde
boy let out a litany of whispered swears and turned to face Rinoa.

"There's *no* way I'm going there!" he informed the raven-haired girl and tried to rid himself from Rinoa's grip.

"Seifer, I'm ordering you to go over and apologise to Squall."

"Hey! I'm not taking orders from anyone but myself!" Seifer exclaimed, looking annoyed.

"Come on, you still owe me for the marzipan piggies!" Rinoa reminded, the tone of her voice something not to be argued with.
For sometime Seifer was silent, trying to come up with a good excuse, unable to do so.

"...Fine! I'll go." The blonde finally agreed, looking like an eight-year old who had broken the neighbour's window, forced to go
over and confess. Rinoa gave him a bright smile and lead him out of the kitchen.

"...But I'm sure he won't see me...or talk to me. What ever trust I had gained from him, I've lost for certain." Seifer informed as
he was pushed out to the porch. "...And what am I gonna say to him??"

"Ah, you'll think of something cousin dear. Go on!" Rinoa encouraged and watched as Seifer reluctantly walked towards
Squall's house. When the blonde boy had crossed the street, she closed the door and went inside.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::...

Seifer stood in front of Squall's house, his hands stuffed into his pockets. There were no lights on and it looked like no one was
home. Hesitantly the blonde boy made his way into the yard. He looked around to make sure no one saw him. The neighbours
were all inside, it being already a late Saturday night.

'I---I can't just go and ring the door-bell...they might be sleeping already.' Seifer reasoned. He looked around and tried to think
of a way to find out if Squall was even at home. Quietly he made his way into the backyard, only to find it empty and dark.

'I can't believe this...I'm sneaking on Squall's backyard!' the blonde made his way back and raised his face. He realised there
were three windows above the porch roof. 'I bet one of those is Squall's...but which one?' Seifer narrowed his eyes as he
carefully inspected the windows. 'I bet it's not the one with those pink curtains...or the one with the flowered ones.' He reasoned.
'That leaves the one in the middle....but how am I gonna know if he's up there?' Seifer frowned, not sure what he should do.

'...Fuck this!...Am I actually standing under Squall's window in the middle of the night?? ...Why not sing a serenade while
you're at it...' The blonde looked around for a small pebble. While he bend down to pick one, he failed to see that Squall was
already standing on the backyard, only a few meters away from him.

'This'll do...But with my luck I'll end up breaking the window...' Seifer straightened himself up and aimed for the middle
window.

"What are you doing on my yard?" Squall finally spoke with his monotone voice. Seifer yelped and looked around, not sure
where the voice had come from.

"Are you really here to break my window Seifer?...I can't believe you..." Squall continued and came forth from the shadows.

Seifer narrowed his eyes and lowered his hand as he finally saw the brunette boy. Squall was wearing some big, old fluffy
jumper that reached down to his knees, so by the looks of it, he hadn't been expecting any visitors.

"Squall?...Where'd you come from?...I-I thought there was no one home and-"

"Leave now Seifer." The younger boy ordered and gave Seifer his best glare. The blonde dropped the pebble from his hand and
neared Squall, but stopped as he realised the brunette was withdrawing.

"C-can't we talk? I promise I won't hurt you anymore Squall! ...I just need to-"

"No Seifer. I don't wanna hear any more of your pathetic apologies. Just go!" Squall repeated his order, his voice starting to get
shaky.

"Well then ....at least let me thank you..." Seifer decided to try another tactic. Squall frowned, not sure what the older boy was
talking about. He was silent for some time, not sure if he should see where Seifer was going with this.

"Thank me?"

"Yeah...I passed the exams you know. Thanks to you Squall." Seifer explained, nearing Squall without the brunette noticing
this. Squall blinked his eyes, not knowing if he should congratulate, or continue the icy act he had put on.

"...W-well...I'm glad...I guess..." the brunette finally mumbled, realising Seifer was getting closer. He became alarmed and took
a few steps back. "Ok, now you can go away!" Squall spoke, trying to sound menacing. "I mean it Seifer!" Squall cried and
twined his arms around his lean torso. Seifer stopped and stood still, eyeing Squall from tip to toes.

'I knew it...he doesn't trust me at all...probably thinks I'm here to hurt him again...' the blonde boy sighed and lowered his face.

"Fine...I'll go ...But I just want you to know that I really like you Squall Leonhart." Seifer said with a low voice and turned
around to leave. Squall blinked his eyes as he watched Seifer's retreating back.

'He really means it?...I thought he was just trying to get off the hook when he said it in the gym hall.' the brunette's defence
walls were already falling off. "Wait...Seifer? ...Are you serious?"

Seifer stopped walking and turned around. Squall was standing near the big oak, waiting for Seifer to answer him. "I am
Squall..." the blonde spoke and walked over to stand before the younger boy. This time Squall didn't flinch.
For a long time the brunette just stood and watched Seifer, his eyes narrowed. The blonde knew Squall was probably thinking if
he should trust Seifer and give him another chance.

'He's forgiven me?...Was it this easy?' When the younger boy finally spoke, Seifer could feel his heart leap up to his throat.

"....Wanna come over and watch 'The Matrix'?...It's on cable tonight. I was watching it in the basement. We have a little leisure
room down there." Squall finally asked, his voice somewhat wavering. He didn't have to wait for the older boy's answer for
long. A big smile spread onto Seifer's face when he realised Squall was actually offering his friendship.

"Really??" he had to make sure Squall really meant it. The younger boy gave him a hesitant nod and a nervous smile.

"Yeah, Seifer, really."

**AN: Well, Squall did forgive Seifer pretty easily, but if he hadn't, they'd never get together. Reviews, reviews, reviews,
please? ^^ I love them so!
