Chapter 6: A Boy

"What's your name?" Erin asked gently again.

The boy was staying quiet, not bothering to answer the instructors. Of course, Erin and Shaina weren't being rough on him. Not at all. They just wanted to talk.

Matron walked out of the orphanage and looked over. There were Erin and Shaina... and him. She walked over to where they were standing to see what was wrong. Erin never came out here unless she was upset, needed to think or... or got in a fight with Mackenzie again.

"Hello," Edea said.

Erin and Shaina jumped at the sudden voice. "Hello Matron," they said in unison.

"I was wondering what this boys name was? Shaina and I wanted to talk with him, but he's not answering..."

"That's Shade, he's always the quiet one. Kind of reminds me of Squall... Never playing with the other kids, never wanting to get in trouble... It's no surprise that he's not talking," Edea explained, and then leaned down to the boy's eye level. "Shade, why aren't you talking to them?"

The boy looked at the aging woman. "They look scary!"

Shaina was about to interrupt, but Erin stopped her. "Scary, huh? Well, do you know about Garden?"

Shade pointed over in Gardens direction. "Yeah."

"Good, well did you know that my friend and I are instructors over at Garden?"

"Wow."

`Way to go Erin! You got him talking!'

"So, why don't you play with the other kids?" Shaina asked.

"Because I don't want too."

"Did you know, you sound just like me when I was younger?" Shaina questioned.

"I do?"

"Yeah, I never wanted to play with anyone. I used to go to a different garden. That's where I met my bestest friend! He's the only one who would talk with me. It took me awhile to stop ignoring him, and we eventually became best friends!"

"Wow..."

"So, why don't you go out and play with some of the kids? I'm sure the only reason they don't talk with you or play with you is because you don't want to talk or play!" Erin suggested.

"OK!"

Erin sighed, then turned back to Edea, as did Shaina.

"You two sure knew how to handle him!" Edea exclaimed.

`Yeah, look at who I have to raise.'

"Yeah, well, we couldn't have done it without your help. Thanks, Matron!" Shaina stated.

"No problem children. Erin, isn't that Mackenzie heading this way?"

Erin turned around, and sure enough, there was Mackenzie, walking slowly, and holding the hand of a younger child.

She leaned over to whisper something to Shaina. "Looks like we have company."

Shaina nodded in agreement, and the two started to run in the direction of the approaching teen.

A/N: I was going to put what happens next in, but decided to wait, as it wouldn't fit into this chapters theme. I'm thinking of including Shade in later events. Ok, I know I'm including him! So... please review! Please?
