CH 5: DeAd Memories
“V-Vincent.” I heard Reno barely breath the fear filled word.
“You are a demon dear Vincent.” Sephiroth smirked as I stopped just in front of him.
“What does that make you?” I countered. Sephiroth reached a hand to me and I grabbed it crushingly tight in my claw before he could touch me. I watched the pain cross his face before it fell blank.
“The devil.” Sephiroth purred as he brought his other hand to my forehead. The world went black.
I rubbed my head feeling it pound as I slowly blinked the world back into focus. I scanned it seeing Cloud shaking in a pool of blood with Reno tentatively trying to reach for him on the left of me. Rude was straight across from me unconscious on the floor, but still breathing. Sephiroth was on the right of me leaning idly against the wall. His head slowly rolled to me with a dark smirk resting on his lips.
“What have you done?” I growled to the silver haired man.
“I? I have done nothing dear Vincent.” I snarled at him before turning to Cloud and Reno. I moved towards them wanting to make sure Cloud was okay. I heard the bullet enter the chamber and froze. My vision focused on Reno who was standing in front of Cloud blocking me from the shrilling man with his gun aimed at my head.
“Reno?” I questioned seeing the cold emptiness of a killer in his eyes, knowing he would take the shot if I moved.
“Don't let him touch me! Don't let him touch me!” I could hear Clouds choking screams. I opened my mouth to question Reno, but he spoke before I could.
“I don't know what the fucks going on, but you ain't getting anywhere near me, Rude, or this kid.” Reno's words were firm.
“Reno, you can not…” I reached a hand towards him. I heard the shot buzz past my ear taking off a couple strands of hair.
“Next shot ain't gonna miss.” I watched Reno steady his aim and let out his breath readying himself to take the shot. I stepped back from him. It was like back when I first met Reno. I could see the killer beneath and knew he wanted me dead. Knew he feared what I was because he didn't understand.
“What is happening?” I mumbled to myself. I felt the cold sweat break over my body and I couldn't get in enough air. I brought a shaking hand to rub away the confusion and fear in my head.
Had I changed and attacked Cloud. I didn't think it was possible, but I had done something terrible. Something that frightened Reno enough he still had the gun trained on me. I heard the groan and turned to the slowly rising form of Rude. I watched him rock his head from side to side cracking his neck and rubbing it with his hand.
“You alright man?” Reno asked in that dead voice. He didn't take his eyes from me. I watched Rude give a slight nod. He looked between the four of us and his vision came back to glare upon me. Rude shook his head with a frown as he pulled his gun out and trained it on me.
I stumbled back never expect this to happen. I had thought they were my friends. I should have never let them stay here. I should have kept myself secluded. I should have never awoken from that nightmare.
“What have you done Vincent?” I turned haunted eyes to Sephiroth. “Your `friends' have turned their weapons on you.” I looked away from Sephiroth. I didn't know what I had done. I couldn't remember. I glanced at Reno and Rude who both looked at me like I was the enemy. My eyes darted to different parts of the room trying to find the answers that I couldn't fathom. I stumbled away from them all until my back hit the wall. I slid into the corner hating the way they all looked at me. Contempt, horror and accusation. Since I awoke that's all I've seen. It is where all relationships I have begin and end. I was doomed to be alone for eternity. Endlessly alone.
I crouched down bringing my hands to either side of my head hating the feeling that was consuming me. For now I was truly alone, not one of the demons even stirred in me. Had they fled from me? What had I done?
“You've failed again dear Vincent.” Sephiroth words floated over me. I had failed. I've failed everyone. The pathetic laugh erupted from my lips and died within seconds. For I was too pathetic to even laugh at anymore.
“Can it Sephiroth before one of these bullets finds you.” I pushed myself up at the end of Reno's threat liking the sound of it. Maybe a bullet to the head would kill me and end this misery that plagued me. I leveled my eyes so they stared into Reno's.
“Whatever you're thinking don't do it Vincent.” Reno said evenly as I stepped towards him. I closed the distance between us.
“That gun must be getting heavy now.” I said blandly as I watched the sweat drip down the sides of Reno's face.
“Don't think I won't do it Vincent.” I glanced behind him to see Cloud's pale white face, his eyes overflowing with fear as they looked upon me. I looked back to Reno leaning my head forward until it rested against the cold dead metal that reminded me so much of my claw.
“Stop me. Stop me before it is you I hurt.” I said as my eyes met his. His eyes narrowed and for a moment I thought I saw disgust and rage mix in his face.
“Reno!” I heard the gravel voice yell out in hopes to stop him, but it was drowned out by the sound of the point blank shot. I felt nothing. I saw Reno's mouth fall open in something akin to shock as I heard his gun clank on the floor.
“One you called friend would have destroyed you. I told you this Vincent. You cannot trust these people. They do not understand what you are. Not like I do. You are never alone as long as I live.” Sephiroth's voice was reassuring in my ears. I looked down watching my body solidify again.
“You would condemn me to this hell!” I screamed as I tore from Sephiroth's grip and went for Reno's gun. Sephiroth's foot landed on top of it before I could grab it. He crouched down to me as I tried uselessly to get the gun. He tilted my face up to his stopping my futile battle.
“Someone has to save you from yourself.” My head fell back farther until I was staring up at the ceiling hating the honesty in Sephiroth's words.
“Save me? Nights without sleep are all I remember. No creature lives as I. I am nothing more then some monster out of horror stories, sucking the life out of everyone around it.” I closed my eyes letting the defeat take my body as my head faced the floor. I couldn't meet Reno, Rude or Cloud's face. I had seen how they would look upon me for the rest of their existence.
I looked down at gold claw. I watched the water hit it and diluted the blood as I clenched and unclenched it. “A life built on sacrifice. And I thought that this would survive.” I could barley see the claw in my wavering vision. “But it seems I can no longer hide the truth of what I am.”
“Vincent.” I looked up to Sephiroth's soft soothing call. His face had a look of almost hurt to it that never reached those cold contemplative cat eyes. His hands grasped my claw and I looked down at his hands holding tight to that retched metal.
“I want to be whole again.” My voice quivered with emotion. It was not only the hand. It was all the pieces of memory the demons had taken. It was never being able to enjoy the daylight. Never to walk among people. Never to be close to anyone.
Sephiroth pulled me against his chest before I could react. I closed my eyes leaning against his embrace. It was comforting to have someone who despite the things I had done was willing to touch me.
“Vincent. You don't have to feel these things anymore.” I looked up at him. I had no hope in anything. I knew I could fall no lower. I had nothing left. My lips curled up in something akin to a self-loathing smile.
“These thorns in my mind are all I can feel.” I barley breathed unable to fight the despair that threatened to drown me.
“Dear Vincent.” Sephiroth sighed into my ear. “Will you give yourself to me? Will you let me take this misery from you, free you from the hateful stairs, the accusations and contempt?”
Sephiroth held me at arms length from him. His hands holding tight to my shoulders. My eyes slowly parted to look upon that serious face. The room was filled with a threatening silence.
My life had come down to a series of words. Such a trivial thing to base ones being on, but I stood with my destiny staring me down waiting for an utterance. There wasn't much thought to it. If I said no to Sephiroth then it would be nothing but self-loathing sorrow that would keep my loneliness company.
“I agree.” Sephiroth's eyes fluttered close as he slowly rolled his head back pulling me against him. It was almost as if my words had created some kind of high for him. I felt his cheek run against my hair.
“Ah Dear Vincent. There is no more need for you to hide in those sullen emotions.” Sephiroth pulled my mouth against his. It felt like I was being drained of everything, like he would suck the very existence of me through his kiss. He leaned away. The world turned a blinding green. I closed my eyes thinking that the world would forever be that tainted green.
My eyes cracked open and teeth clenched together as the sneering grin slowly took my lips. I leaned my head back letting a dark cackle slip from my mouth. My tongue slowly licked over my bottom lip followed by my upper teeth as I returned my gaze to Sephiroth. I cocked my head to the side narrowing my eyes at him.
“And how do you feel Vincent?” I leaned my head to the other side thinking over Sephiroth's question.
“Good enough to destroy this whole world.” I smirked at Sephiroth who raised quizitive brow at me. I turned from him before he could speak. “I think I should start with them.” I gave a snarl to the three that remained, one staring in horror, another in disbelief, and the final in disappointment. Sephiroth grabbed my arm before I could go after them. I didn't take my eyes off the three, just waiting for any to make a move.
“Give them a running start to be fair Dear Vincent.” Sephiroth purred behind me.
“This was a fucking set up. I can't believe I fell right into your fucking plan.” Reno was looking from me to Sephiroth then his gun. I pulled against Sephiroth wanting to crush the red haired man's throat.
“I can only hold him for so long. Vincent is quite strong when he is angry.” Sephiroth's voice was full of laughter as he gave me a little ground to move towards them.
“Reno. It's too late. There's nothing we can do now. Grab the kid.” Rude said as he steadied his gun on me.
“I will tear your intestines from your gut before you can get a shot off Turk.” I spat the last word in disgust at the large bald man.
“I ain't leavin him here. I ain't gonna let the fuck win!” Reno growled crouching ready to go for his gun. I heard Sephiroth take in a breath to unleash another idle threat. I spun swinging my claw at him. He jumped back letting me go. I moved for Reno as he moved for his gun. I was much faster, even Rude's bullets could not find their target in me. I saw the movement out of the corner of my eye. Sephiroth had his fist buried in Rude's gut, effectively disarming him. I focused on Reno who was leaning down to grab his gun, but my claw found his neck before his hand could grasp his only weapon. I squeezed raising him from the floor. Reno choked and sputtered in my deadly grip. I smiled up at his wide-eyed face. His hands desperately grasping at my metal wrist.
“Such weak pitiful creatures. To believe this whole planet is wasted on you. You looked upon me with hate, fear, and contempt even after I saved your world. I should have let you all die.” I squeezed Reno's throat tighter as the thought took hold in my mind. “I will kill you all. Every last one of you. Now look upon me in fear for you will all die by my hand!” I howled in laughter as I started to dig the metal claw into the softness of Reno's neck.
My grip faltered as my mouth filled with blood. I looked down feeling a numbing pain in my chest. I smiled letting the blood leak from my mouth as it was from the tip of Cloud's massive sword that was sticking through me. I glanced over my shoulder at Cloud.
“Ah puppet, back for more?” I watched Cloud's arms tremble as he barley held onto the hilt of his sword. “If indeed you wish to kill me, you'll have to try much harder than that.” I said with a gargling laugh. My laugh was cut off by Cloud forcing the rest of the blade through me. My eyes fluttered for a moment in a mix of pain and pleasure.
“I will fuckin kill you.” I could hear the fear behind the false strength in his voice. I spat a mouthful of red to the floor before I turned my attention back to Cloud.
“Is that so.” I said menacingly. I reached my clawed hand back, grabbing him by the hair before he could regain control over his fear of me, and pulled him around me. I craned his neck back forcing him to look at me. He clawed at that metal, his body trembling with water spilling from his eyes. I brought his face close to mine.
“Oh I am sure you mean to kill me puppet.” I licked the tears from his cheek forcing a small whimper from him. I gave a short laugh before I brought his neck against his own blade that protruded from my chest.
“Though I do not think you'll ever have the strength. So I give you this option.” I lightened my grip on his hair. “You can slit your own throat on your sword now or stay here with me.” The last was an open-ended threat. I let go of Cloud and he didn't move.
“Is this what you plan to do to the others. Give them a choice of death or worse.” Cloud turned his head to look up at me. I could see the red line on his neck where the blade had already split his skin.
“No. They will die here.” I said as if it were inconsequential.
“W-What if…” I watched Cloud's lip quiver in his determination to speak over his fear. “What if I-I…stay?” I raised an eyebrow as I cocked my head to the side letting the one-sided smirk slip on my face.
“Are you attempting to bribe me?” Cloud closed his eyes.
“Yes.” He sighed. “I w-won't fight you.” I leaned down to him letting the smirk take my whole face.
“As if you did last time.” Cloud looked away from me trying to keep up his bargaining attempt.
“I-I won't do anything like this again.” He glanced at the sword. I leaned back contemplating his offer.
“And what do you wish in return? Hm. Perhaps it is that we let these two go and the others that sleep in this house now. That is a lot to ask of me. I think I should make you choose two who may leave while the others will die? What do you think Sephiroth?” I glance over to see Sephiroth directly on my right.
“You play to many games Vincent.” Sephiroth voice was filled with annoyance. I was given no time to respond before he yanked Cloud's weapon from my chest sending me to my knees. I panted there, blood spilling rapidly for a moment before my body healed itself.
“Get the others and leave here puppet.” Sephiroth said with command to Cloud. I grabbed Cloud's ankle before he could move. He looked down on me in terror as I grinned up at him. I was on my feet and had my claw around his waste, while my other hand was under his chin pressing his back against my chest. I glared at Sephiroth resting my chin on Cloud's shoulder.
“Vincent.” I could see anger in Sephiroth. “Let him go.” He commanded me like he had Cloud. I smirked at Sephiroth as I licked up Clouds neck to his jawbone then all the way to his chin.
“I can taste his fear. Hm. I will let him go when I'm through with him.” My voice was full of sadistic pleasure. I turned Cloud's face to mine forcing my lips against his. My clawed hand moved down to the torn pants. I was able to easily grab hold of his limp member. The cold metal took hold of him and his mouth opened in a panicked breath giving my tongue access. I kept my eyes on Sephiroth as I kissed and rubbed on Cloud. I could see the tension move through Sephiroth.
I gave a slight moan letting my eyes fall half closed as I kissed Cloud deeper. Cloud only whimpered and cried against my touch. Sephiroth moved with only speed he was capable of, but it didn't mean I was not prepared. I tossed the smaller man away from me as Sephiroth and I were face to face.
“You play a dangerous game Dear Vincent.” Sephiroth growled.
“I do not play games boy.” I countered letting the smile take my lips. Sephiroth catlike pupils narrowed.
“I can take this all away from you and turn you back to that sniveling creature you were.” Sephiroth voice was back to its normal arrogance.
“I would like to see you try.” I said with the same arrogance.
“Do not test me Dear Vincent.” The anger was back in Sephiroth. He moved to turn from me. I grabbed him by the front of his coat pulling him to me. I tilted my head closing the distance between us so our lips brushed as I spoke.
“Never threaten me again boy. I will have whatever I want whenever I want it.” My voice was a seductive threat. My tongue traced along Sephiroth's lips until they finally parted giving me entrance. I pulled away from him dragging my teeth along his bottom lip. Sephiroth's eyes slowly rolled open in satisfaction.
The hand gripped tight to my arm as it spun me to glaring dark eyes. “Vincent this isn't you. Come on man; don't let Sephiroth fuck with you like this. I know you're stronger than this shit. Come on Vincent!”
My hand latched around his wrist making him release me by snapping the frail bone. He fell to a knee his dark eyes still staring into my uncaring gaze.
“You'd give up so easily. Goddamn you Vincent.” I bent Reno's broken wrist, making him flinch.
“I was damned before you were even conceived. Despite what you may feel, this is what I have become. This is what you helped create.” I crouched down to him pulling him in close to me. “The time has come to close your eyes.” I growled as I pressed my lips against his pulling my clawed hand back to tear into his stomach. I watched Reno's eyes close as my claw went for his guts.
My claw stopped a nucleus away from his stomach as his hand slid tenderly along my cheek and down my jawbone. I pulled away from him, his eyes remained shut, but I could see the water slowly drip along his pale skin.
“If my death can ease your pain, then take it.” He said as his eyes slowly opened to look upon me with a glistening light in the blackness of his gaze. I looked away from Reno as I stood. Sephiroth was in front of me his face blank. I walked past him and to the door stopping to speak over my shoulder.
“Leave. All of you leave before my kindness fades as fast as my memories of you all. You are no longer welcome here. If I sense any of you near here I will kill you.” I left the room with nothing left to say.
I made my way up the spiraling stairs my mind in a vortex of memories, emotions, and indecision. Reno's words were like a poison seeping into my head causing me to question my identity. I stumbled out of the secret passage into the dank room. Everything was moving too fast. My memory was in some kind of overdrive trying to lead me down a path I didn't want to go.
I moved through room after room, it all looking familiar, yet in the same moment seeming completely out of place. My head felt like it was filled with static. A never-ending wave of blurring colored dots that no matter how hard I tried would form nothing recognizable.
A pain consumed me deep within my gut, like something was trying to tear out of me. I heard the maelstrom of cries fill my overflowing mind. I fell to my knees hunching over clenching my stomach willing everything to go away. I felt a cold sweat spread along my skin. My eyes slammed closed, my head rested against the floor, and my teeth clenched together as I let out a low growling moan feeling the skin on my back beginning to separate.
I leaned back on my knees crying out for death. Anything to make this pain disappear. The pain only spread. I felt it moving down my arms. My eyes quivered as I watched the metal claw shatter from the wrist down. The gold exploding into a billion pieces as a new smooth black hand replaced the metal. Though calling it a hand was easier then trying to identify the demon like clawed appendage that was there now. It had short black fur along the palm and back, but after the first knuckle on the four fingers and thumb it was nothing but smooth black dagger like talons.
My attention was torn from it as my right hand exploded in blood, bone, skin and thicker fluids.
I screamed in pain and the shock from feeling my own tissue and fluids dripping down my face as the right hand formed into that same grotesque form as the left.
“Stop this.” I weakly murmured to my own body as I stared at the shaking hands. My ears rang as if there was an air horn being blasted into them. I put the retched excuses for hands over them trying to drown the sound out with my scream. I could feel the blood leaking down the side of my neck from the rupturing drums, my ears growing to pointed tips.
I couldn't grasp what was happening. It was like Chaos was coming out, but I was far from my limit of anger. I wasn't even angry. I had lost complete control. The train of thought I was trying to catch derailed as blood filled my mouth and my teeth felt like they were being slowly torn from my mouth. My new-clawed hands met the floor as I panted and watched the pearl white molars and K9s fall from my mouth with a crimson coating; red and white covered the floor. My eyes squeezed together as they began to burn.
“Stop!” I howled as I collapsed to my side on the floor unable to take anymore. The pain finally faded. I felt and saw the huge black wing fall across my side to rest in my line of sight. It was like the black wing of a bat. I rolled my tongue along my teeth. From the K9s back was nothing but razor sharp rows on top and bottom. My K9s had turned into elongated fangs, only the four teeth on top and the bottom, between the two sets of fangs, were normal. I glanced at my new hands. Is this what I had become. Something not human nor fully demon. Some abomination to both kinds.
I stared at the deteriorating stair that was in front of me. I knew I was in the entrance room. They would see what I had become, but there was nothing I could do. I couldn't even move. The pain was gone, but weakness and aching took its place.
“Wha-What is it?” I heard the horrified breath of Tifa.
“I-It's Vincent.” Cloud whispered in a fear filled voice.
“Holy shit. What the fuck happened to him?” I watched Reno's dirt covered dress shoes move into my view. He crouched down and I looked over at him. I watched him fall back from me putting a hand over his mouth. “Heaven help us.” He breathed without thought. I knew I must look terrifying to shake Reno. “Vincent?”
“Get out.” I growled. My voice still sounded like my own, just strained. I watched Rude grab Reno as he glanced over at me with a shudder turning away from me quickly as he could. I heard the rushed steps of the troupe exit the mansion. I sighed out a breath letting my eyes close wanting nothing more than the emptiness of sleep.
I heard the heavy oak sliding above me. My eyes parted watching the dim light enter my coffin as Sephiroth's face came into view above me. He studied me over in my new form. I could see through the emptiness he conveyed with his face and into the wonder and awe that lay behind it. He had no idea how I'd done it or what I had become, but nor did I.
“You should let your emotions show on your face.” Sephiroth's arched eyebrow rose in question.
“If you already perceive what they are there is no need for such a thing, though I expected a warmer welcome after I brought you to your coffin to rest.” I grind up at Sephiroth letting my new sets of fangs show as I sat up forcing Sephiroth back from me.
“You are lucky I let you live. You should take that as your thanks.” I said as I stepped from the coffin stretching myself and the huge wings that rested on my back. I could feel Sephiroth looking at me. I knew the questions that went through his mind for they were the same as the ones I had had before I ignored them as I did him.
I grabbed a shirt tearing two holes in the back easily with my new taloned hands. I slid it on putting the wings through the holes. I grabbed my cape from where it still rested on the floor. I buckled it on looking down at the stain of blood where I'd taken Cloud. The sick grin took my lips as I remembered how good it felt inside him. I may have to find him again.
“What are you thinking Vincent?” I turned to Sephiroth's cool voice. He still hadn't moved from his spot by my coffin.
“No longer can you read my thoughts? I thought you knew everything.” I smirked at him. He only stared me down. “What no threats? Ah, is it because you know you can not touch me now.”
“You will never be more powerful than I Vincent. No matter what demons you summon.” Sephiroth said evenly.
“Maybe, but I'm in control.” My voice was filled with darkness as I turned from him going to the upper levels in the house. I had one mission in mind. I wanted to see this new creature I had become. I made my way into the bathroom. My hand hovered on the light switch knowing I couldn't turn back after I flipped the switch. Of course, it was already to late to turn back. I flipped the switch walking into the lit room. I went still as I studied the reflection. I could barley see myself there anymore.
My hair was still black and the bandana still rested upon my head, but now my eyes in there full reflected that same crimson color. There was no longer an iris, white, or pupil, just never-ending crimson that seemed to have a glowing life of it's own. I brought my hands up to touch near the gleaming red orbs and stopped short seeing the inhuman taloned fingers. I pulled up the sleeves on my shirt seeing the change, one side metal, and the other pale skin, both turning to black at the wrists. The black wings unfolded from my back almost filling the whole bathroom in their span. My ears were still flesh colored, but came to sharp points about two inches above there normal height. I pulled my lips back from the teeth seeing the huge fangs that hid behind them.
I no longer had the option of passing for human. I no longer was human. I didn't know what I was. I closed my eyes searching for the familiarness of Chaos or any of the other demons. I don't know how long I stood there searching inside me. My eyes parted. The crimson stared back at me as knowledge set in. I could no longer feel them separately. They had all combined, but that is not all they had done.
The demons were apart of me. They always would be. A form I could take when I could no longer fight. That was not an option for me anylonger. They not only combined with eachother. They embedded themselves into me. We were not separate entities. We were now one. Their blood moved through my veins. I knew the ways of their kind, bits of knowledge and information that had been bred into them was apart of me. This is how I would remain. Forever this is what I would be, half demon and human. I could feel them throughout me. Mixed into every cell, a piece of them in every part of my body.
Chaos would never speak to me again. He would never be able to give me advice. He and the other demons had let their voices dissolve to join into me. Perhaps they thought they would never be able to break out again and decided a loss of consciousness would be better than to loose everything.
“You weak demons.” I growled to my reflection before I walked out of the bathroom. I was mad they had done it. I was mad because I knew Chaos did it when he thought he could take over my mind. In my prior state it would have been easy. I didn't want to live. I hated what I was and everything I had done. Sephiroth had open something within me. Something that had always been there only the grief had suppressed it. If Sephiroth wouldn't have done it, it would have been my consciousness that dissolved to nothing. The demons got what they deserved. I would no longer be controlled by anyone or anything. I would destroy everything.
