~Chapter 1~
'Nighttime (Well, I couldn't come up with anything better!)'
Seifer was asleep in his dorm, having a peaceful sleep, when he felt the sensation of something poking him in the shoulder. He batted at the disturbance and dozed back off. But it still continued. This time he smacked at it, cussing in an annoyed tone, "Touch my back again and I'll break your fucking fingers." he grumbled angrily. "Seifer, its me." said a soft voice. He rolled over and opened his eyes sleepily. Rinoa was standing over his bed with a tired, worried look on her face. She was wearing a simple, purple and blue flannel shirt-type thing and had a small blanket draped over her shoulders. Something had sprung up between them (I'll explain it in another story at a later date.) and now he felt sorry for being so mean. He yawned sleepily, "Sorry, babe. Didn't know it was you. Well, what is it?" he flicked on a lamp that set on his nightstand. All and all, Rinoa didn't look so well. She was on the pale side and had dark circles under her eyes. Seifer frowned. "You don't look so good. C'mon, what's wrong?" Rinoa just shook her head sleepily. "I'm just tired. I couldn't sleep at all tonight. It was horrible. I'm so tired, but I just can't fall asleep." "Why?" he asked, still half asleep. "You an insomniac or something?" she smiled faintly and shook her head. "No I...I just can't. I have this feeling keeping me awake. It's strange, like heart griping terror, only I'm not sure what it is that is frightening me. It feels like something's just...wrong, out of place. Oh, I'm so confused and-" she stopped when she noticed Seifer had closed his eyes. "Seifer!" she said in an irked tone. She gave him a rough shake. "What? I'm up, I'm up. You were saying you had a feeling bugging ya? Probably just something ya ate..." Rinoa cut in as he trailed off. "No, it wasn't. I'm sure of it. I don't like the feeling, it scares me almost. On top of that, I've been having nightmares again." she said, look down at the floor. Her lips trembled, like she was on the verge of a breakdown. He yawned once again, fatigue still settled in. He scooted over, which wasn't too far, considering the size of his bed, and opened the covers. She noticed he was wearing a pair of plain black boxer shorts and his chest was bare. She hesitated for a moment, but eventually crawled in. "Maybe I'll sleep better with you to protect me." she said, laying her head against his chest. He had to admit he liked the feel of her silky, black hair against his chest. Sleepily and absent-mindedly, he ran his fingers through her hair half singing, half humming a small song that always seemed to calm her down. It wasn't long before he actually fell asleep, fatigue getting the best of him. It was barely two in the morning, and he had a late night. Rinoa cuddled against his chest and finally felt the mists of sleep calling her name, though she still could feel a pang of haunting, gut-wrenching terror. She simply ignored it, knowing it couldn't possibly be too incredibly terrible. Not with Seifer around, that is.
