Final Fantasy:
The Crystal Chronicles
Back in black, with sunglasses on at night, and half a tank of gas. As you may notice, quite a few of the events and dialogue that you will find in this story cannot be found in Crystal Chronicles. That is because I made almost all of it up. The rest of it I just decided to elaborate upon, such as tribal history and so forth. The names of the main characters were taken from other Square games, for the most part, and the others I made up. The names of the family members, however, I tried to make sure were actual names you can find in Crystal Chronicles. Also, the names of dungeons and monsters are also unvaried. This story is mostly just my attempt to explain as to what happens in a crystal caravan, in a probably poor attempt to give the characters some depth. Also, I do not own any of the copyrights to this and any other games. Oh, and one last thing. You will notice that there are five main characters, rather than the max four. If you don't like it, suck ass.
In order to give you a vision of the characters, there are two Clavats (a Natural-style male and a Long Hair-style female), one Lilty (a Bare Head-style male), one Yuke (a One Horn-style male), and one Selkie (a Raccoon Tail-style female). If you don't know what the hell I'm talking about, then look at the character creation screen or, better yet, look in the Crystal Chronicles instruction booklet and check out the four tribes section. For those of you that haven't played or don't own Crystal Chronicles, you might be able to find the images on the net.

“Wake up, wake up, wake up! You're in the caravan this year, sis! Wake up!” Deh Tiv, a young Selkic boy, jumped up and down on his sister Nikki's bed in a desperate attempt to wake her. Nikki, however, still slept like a rock, her blonde hair relatively undisturbed, and her bountiful bosom still rising and falling in the midst of deep sleep, despite her brother's attempts. A brilliant idea entering his mind, he raced about for his father, Gila Moo, and found him in the family lab.
“Papa.”
“Yes, Deh?”
“Can I have a wet cloth?”
“Why do you need a wet cloth?”
“To wake up Nikki.”
“And why do you want to wake her up?”
“So that she can leave.”
“Why the bloody hell do you want to wake her up? She doesn't need to go anywhere for another hour, and she'll get mad if you wake her up like that.” Despite his words, he ceased his experiment for the moment to dip a nearby rag in a bucket of cool water. Shooing away his younger son, he thought about using a similar tactic on his older son, Gan Noo, dismissed it, and then proceeded on with his experiment.
Running through the house, Deh Tiv nearly ran into his mother in his haste. Catching him just before he slammed into her, Wam Soo lifted her son off his feet, and cradled him in her arms the way she cradled a baby.
“And why is my bubbly bundle racing around the house at this hour with a damp cloth?”
“I've got to wake up sis before the caravan leaves, and the cloth is gonna help me.” Shoving the cloth into his mother's face to emphasize the point, he smiled smugly in his brilliance. Brushing the cloth out of her face, Wam Soo set her son down on his feet.
“Okay, then. Just remember what happened last time you tried this.” Giving her child a light-hearted smack in the rear, she sent him off to wake his sister. Before he disappeared around the corner of the hall, she shouted out to him again. “Tell her I want to talk with her before she leaves, alright?”
“Yes, mama!” Turning back to the stairs in front of him, he ran up on his mission. Swinging the door open with no small effort, Deh Tiv ran up to Nikki's bed, and wrung the towel over her face. As the icy water spilled over her, she spluttered to life, accidentally inhaling some in her shock.
“Holy…! What the hell?!” Attempting to backhand her brother across the face and missing, Nikki sat up and wiped the water from her eyes, coughing occasionally from the water in her windpipe.
“Mama said she wanted to talk to you, so you can't hit me.” Giving her his message, he disappeared like a dream, not wanting to tempt his sister's wrath any further. Getting out of bed and opening her linen trunk, Nikki changed out of her nightgown. Looking down at the empty space within, she chose some of the only articles remaining, which were a skirt and blouse. She remembered wearing them as a fourteen-year-old, and she barely managed to get them on. `Pity', she thought, tugging the skirt as low as she could get it, `I like these.' Looking over at her pack, nestled in the corner of her room, she contemplated her imminent departure and freedom from her family. Going over to the bag and heaving it over her shoulder, she took one last look at her room before heading for the exit. Leaving her room, she used her operatic voice to track her parent down.
“Mum, where are you? Deh Tiv said you wanted to talk!” Popping her head out a nearby door, Wam Soo acknowledged her daughter.
“Dear gods, you always did have a bloody loud voice. Come in here, we need to talk.” Following her mother into the bedroom, Nikki was cautious of her surroundings, although she saw nothing more than folded sheets and a bare bed, the last time her mother had wanted to talk to her privately it had been for `the talk'. “Well, it's good to see you didn't manage to beat your brother.”
“The bastard got water in my eyes. I couldn't see him.”
“I've seen you miss with less than a foot between you and him. Sometimes I think it's a miracle you know where to put your foot coming up the stairs.” Smiling lightly as her daughter grimaced, she walked over to a set of drawers and continued talking. “You're leaving today, right?”
“Yeah. So why did you make Deh wake me up?”
“Make? What are you talking about? He went after you without me having to ask him, although I… ah, here it is.” Reaching into the bottom of a drawer, she pulled something out. “I wanted to give you a parting gift before you left. Hold out your hand.” Revealing a small vial, Wam Soo placed it in her daughter's hands. Holding it up to the light coming from the window, Nikki saw that the vial contained a bubbly, blue liquid.
“What's this? I haven't seen anything like this before.” Nikki's suspicions began to move off the subject of `the talk'. Her parents sometimes used her as a guinea pig for their riskier experiments. Although they had always assured her that she was never on death's doorstep, she remembered often wanting to be after consuming an unknown substance.
“As you shouldn't have. That is a family secret, passed down from mother to daughter since from even before our people migrated from the north. If you drink it, you cannot conceive for a period of one month.” Nikki's head suddenly turned to face her mother, and she blushed furiously from the comment. She had never `put out' for any of the local boys, and this gift made her feel as if her mother thought she was some kind of whore.
“Mother!” Ignoring her daughter's indignant cry, Wam Soo continued with her speech.
“And if you somehow manage to lose your virginity, and you forget to drink it beforehand, drink some as soon as possible, and you will not suffer the consequences.” Taking out another vial filled with the same liquid, Wam Soo gave it to her daughter, who considered dashing them both across the floor. “Before you start thinking about busting those vials, just remember that your grandma did the exact same thing to me. I don't think you're more likely to screw yourself silly out in the real world than you are here. It's just that if you meet a special someone, by any stretch of the imagination, you can use some to keep yourself out of trouble. Besides, the roads have been getting more dangerous lately. If you get raped and you have that along, you won't have to worry about pregnancy.” Thinking about the strange liquid as a tool to save her future should any such atrocity occur allowed Nikki to pack the vials away in a small belt pouch, and forgive her mother for this unseemly transgression. Somewhat.
“Thank you, Mum.” Deciding to ignore the sarcastic ring in her voice, Wam Soo pulled her in and gave her only daughter a final hug before she left.
“My sweet baby girl has grown up. I'm gonna miss you, but at least I won't have to be hearing your brothers complaining about you hitting them, will I?”
“No.” Smiling a bit at the comment, Nikki picked up her pack and walked out of her parents' bedroom, passing her brothers' room as she headed toward the entrance of the house, deciding it wasn't worth her time to wake up Gan Noo. As she made her way down the stairs, she heard her youngest brother running through the hall below, his footsteps ending when he arrived at the bottom of the stairs. Watching as he lifted his head to look up the stairwell, her lips spread into a malicious grin, licking them with her tongue in a slow circle. Deh Tiv's face suddenly paled when he recognized the form at the top. `Maybe I could leave her one last complaint', she thought, her muscles tightening in anticipation. By the time he had managed to turn around and start running away, Nikki had already bounded down the steps four-at-a-time, trailing behind him by barely two feet. As she was chasing him through the hall, though, Nikki suddenly dug her heels into the ground, bringing her to a dead halt as Deh Tiv continued running, disappearing out of the house, screaming for some benevolent god to show mercy on him. She stood just to the side of the doorway leading into her family's lab, where she heard her father whistling an old tune he had heard as a child. Icy fear went down her spine as she listened, and her eyes began to bug out. Her heart was racing in her chest, and her ribcage suddenly felt too small for her lungs. Taking a cautious step forward, Nikki waited to hear if there was any change in the whistle. Hearing none, she took another step forward, then another. She stood just outside the lab now, halfway across the width, three steps from…
`He heard me.' The whistling stopped. Nikki felt herself break into a cold sweat, her legs frozen in place as her eyes slowly turned to look at him. He stood with a vial full of some milky substance in his hand, his eyes transfixed on her. Before he could say anything though, Nikki opened her mouth.
“I hate you.” With those three words, Nikki's legs unfroze and she ran. She ran and ran until she came to a fork in the road, where she collapsed, her legs no longer willing to support her, her head light, and her heartbeat sporadic.
Fin…for now.
